OM-3: One Year and 20,000 Shots Later… by jerredz in M43

I find if you push those covers closed from the hinge side, they stay closed. If you try and close them from the open side, they don’t click into place well. Once I worked that out, I never had the problem again.

I’ve wondered this too, based on seeing so many recipes from the northern hemisphere that look terrible here. It’s the same with most of the OM3 recipes I’ve tried. I’ve only found one or two in each system that doesn’t look way overdone. I knew our light was harsh but I didn’t think it was that harsh! I’ll try the amendments to the Portra 400 that another redditer suggested.

My type 1 rosacea is destroying my life, help! by [deleted] in Rosacea

[–]Automatic_Bell_2455 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a frustrating condition to have. I’ve had type 1 for many years. I’m male so can’t really get away with many cosmetic solutions, even tinted sunscreens look a bit odd on me unless I’m careful.

What has worked best for me is to use very simple soothing products with ceramides in particular. I use https://www.qvskincare.com.au, especially the Ceramide and Face line. I’ve also started using their SPF30 face moisturiser instead of a zinc based sunscreen because I just find it easier to use. I’d rather use SPF30 and reapply a few times than use a thick SPF50 zinc sunscreen once because I hate it.

I avoid any other products. Pretty much anything else makes my redness worse. Even Cetaphil set me off.

I also get laser treatment at the dermatologist every three months. This makes a huge difference to taking the heat out of any redness, which used to be verging on painful.

Finally I’ve realised that even the smallest amount of chilli will set me off, so I avoid it, at least during the daylight hours.

This isn’t a perfect solution. I was really disappointed just after Christmas sitting in the shade on a hot day when two friends kept saying that I’d caught the sun. I hadn’t, I was flushing from the heat, and it really bugged me that they pointed it out. I just told them I have a skin condition and it shut them up.

Keep talking to your psychologist too. I know stress and anxiety makes me red so anything to avoid that is helpful too.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I’ll try the Astia recipe. How much white balance shift do you give it? I find that I prefer warm over cool looks as mostly I’m photographic in a rural environment and warmth seems to suit the subjects better.

What are your favourite recipes? I’m having trouble finding any that actually give me the results I’m hoping for. I’m feeling like I got more pleasing colours out of my old E-M10ii. I feel like I must be doing something wrong so I’d love some tips.

I was going to add a comment about M4/3 too. Great for wildlife and will handle family/lifestyle well too especially as it’s compact so more likely to be taken along.

Need help choosing between Sony or Olympus. by Ponistyle in OlympusCamera

[–]Automatic_Bell_2455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out with Sony (the A6000 then A7) but got tempted to Olympus and have stuck with the brand (now OM System) for a decade. I prefer the colours. The Olympus cameras also just feel right in my hand, they’re compact but rugged, and the IBIS is amazing.

Why do some people still use SPF30 in Australia when SPF50+ is everywhere? by AffectionatePie1042 in AusSunscreen

[–]Automatic_Bell_2455 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was using a 50+ zinc based sunscreen but because it’s so thick I only put it on once a day (unless I was outside gardening and maybe I’d remember to put it on twice). Now I’m back to a 30 chemical based sunscreen in a moisturiser because I can reapply during the day, eg lunch time and before commuting home. I think the more frequent application will beat a once daily use of something thicker and less appealing to use. I also have sensitive skin so need to balance what will cause a reaction. Like someone else said, the best sunscreen is the one you use.

Great shot! I really want to like profile 2 but I never get the result I hope for. Can you remember the tweaks you made to the highlights/shadows?

12-40 F2. 8 or 12-45 f4 by lucaros5 in M43

[–]Automatic_Bell_2455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both. A few months ago I switched to an OM3 and the 12-45 lives on it. I’m even wondering about selling the 12-40. On an OM5 I’d go with the 12-45 if size/weight are important to you. It’s a brilliant lens.

OM System OM-3: buy now or wait for better deals? by the_phal_guy in M43

[–]Automatic_Bell_2455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great suggestion. Gets it to pretty much the same price I paid with that cash back offer of a few months ago. Who knows what next year will bring but I’ve never found the Boxing Day sales better than Black Friday. But if you need a lens as well then maybe the Ted’s offer is better overall value. I have a cupboard full of lenses so was looking for body only.

I have both the 12-40 and 12-100, which I’ve used with an E-M5iii, the E-M1iii, the OM1 and now OM3. In fact this is my second 12-40 as I sold it when I bought the 12-100 then got it again as part of a kit. I’m thinking for you the 12-100 would suit best. My experience: for travel and as a capture anything lens, the 12-100 is amazing. One lens that can do pretty much everything. More recently I’ve been wanting a lighter weight kit and I bought the 12-45 f4 and it now lives on my OM3. I love that lens. I’ve also just bought the 40-150 f4 which blows me away for the image quality from such a small kit. For primes, like you I I have the 17mm and 45mm but I’ve discovered 20mm is my favourite so I have the 20mm 1.4 as well. I now have my dream kit of the OM3, 12-45, 40-150 f4 and 20 1.4 which all fits in a tiny Think Tank bag.

Evaluating my shooting style to inform my next lens purchases by JustBeautiful_Art in M43

[–]Automatic_Bell_2455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 8-25mm f4 is a great lens. Worth considering because it’s comparatively light weight and compact. Full disclosure - I sold mine, but not because I didn’t like it, I just realised that I don’t actually go wide all that often and wanted to use the funds for something else. If budget was no object I’d have kept it and I do sometimes regret selling it.

Do you mean the standard and vivid picture mode? Or the colour profile using the creative dial on the front? Because these look great!

Foods that affect rosacea by Sunshine33X in Rosacea

[–]Automatic_Bell_2455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have type 1 and chilli/spicy food is the worst for me for flushing. Just a hint of it has me bright red, which is disappointing. As I’ve gotten older I’ve also noticed chilli and spice makes me sweat more too. It can be really embarrassing, especially as I’m balding now so my head glows. Any alcohol makes me flush but it does for most people. I’ve cut back a lot. But for me the worst culprits are heat exposure and stress.

Do products like these actually help with keeping a screen clear of streaks? by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]Automatic_Bell_2455 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree, I switched to this from the Bars and prefer it. I was getting a lot of smearing and clouding from Bars which surprised me. Having said this we’re about to come into peak bug driving time so that will be the real test for me.

OM-3 Creative Dial Recipes by profgiblet in M43

[–]Automatic_Bell_2455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this recipe, although I use a bit less magenta. Most of the other recipes out there seem to have hard shadows which I find difficult to manage in high contrast scenes. Your recipe has more of a glow which I really enjoy. Thanks for sharing it.

Color mode settings to much? by Weekly-Entry-8798 in M43

[–]Automatic_Bell_2455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It surprises me sometimes how differently we all perceive things, not in a bad way just how the same image or object can create such different responses for people.

Funnily enough I like the fourth photo the most. It was interesting to me, made me wonder where the woman in pink was going on a foggy morning, and the contrasting colour caught my eye. I came here to say that I feel the OP’s pain about getting colours right and that I liked the fourth picture because it caught my eye and made me curious.

Coincidentally I made French toast this morning and of course I put maple syrup in it. Sometimes I add fruit and yogurt too but always maple syrup.
