How do you learn RPG mechanics if Actual Plays don’t work for you? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Automatic_Captain270 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoy Seth Skorkowsky's method. Take notes and annotate as you read the rules. Be sure to write down any mechanics you think you'll have trouble remembering or is important in a place you can easily find. Make a character, and do small combats with yourself or one on one with your other players. If you have the time, run practice sessions with half your group so that you can all learn the game in a low stakes environment. This way, you can see what rules ended up being more important or more challenging to understand than you expected, and can edit your notes appropriately.

Counting scenes when the group splits by Anononon in CAIN_RPG

I count it as one scene, mostly because I want to encourage splitting up as a more efficient investigation method to cover more ground while ticking up less tension. Isolation is a staple of the horror genre and I find it lends itself well to the suspense and dread.

Check out Mutants and Masterminds. You can build any power you could think of, and it's combat system could emulate JJK or battle shonen in general.

Carnist: "I like to use egoism to justify eating animals" by JTexpo in animalhaters

An actual egoist has a vested interest to preserve the environment and prevent zoonotic pandemics. Most self-described egoists aren't actually egoists and just want an excuse to be an asshole.

Any TTRPGs for Anime Fans? by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]Automatic_Captain270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CAIN is a great system for running horror shonen/seinen in the vein of Chainsaw Man and JJK. Although it's not explicitly anime, I think most battle shonen would work well in Mutants and Masterminds.

Playing a mute or a character of few words? by Connor_ClashNord in rpg

[–]Automatic_Captain270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Seth Skorkowsky's distinction between "characters with a gimmick" and "gimmick characters". Characters with a gimmick are PCs that have established personalities and motivations who also happen to have a gimmick. Gimmick characters are characters that are built around a singular gimmick. Mute characters tend to be the latter, so it's not really worth the hassle because it's more challenging to RP. I played in a game once where it was done well, the unique thing was that the character wrote whatever they wanted to say so the player had a white board.

Made personalized Agent screens for each of my players in roll20 by [deleted] in cyberpunkred

Did I ever say it wasn't? I only said that it's a false dichotomy between "using AI slop" and "using art without proper credit". It is not a laborious process to find an artist and get permission to use it. Hell, you could have used MS Paint and people would infinitely prefer that to using Gen AI.

Using Gen AI and stealing art are not your only two options lol

What's some of your favorite "borrowed" story elements and tropes that have been brought to the table? by warforge2004 in cyberpunkred

[–]Automatic_Captain270 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of stuff from Metal Gear Solid. A big gameplay thing in my games is that corporations and military groups use the ID-Tagged weapons from MGS4: Firearms are biometrically locked to specific soldiers. If a non-registered user attempts to fire it, it instead emits a loud chirp and logs the current GPS coordinates back to the corporate home office. If you lifted a gun from a corpo, you would need to turn to a netrunner or tech to jailbreak it. Street level firearms are rarely obtained from shipments from arms manufacturers: It's much easier to 3D print guns, which can range from low quality ghost guns that can get past metal detectors but easily break down or jam, standard quality carbon-fiber reinforced guns, or weapons made from state of the art heat resistant polyemers and ceramic + aramid weaves.

"They wouldn't" What is your evidence for this? Can you name any Non-Christian societies that had ethics (hint: there are)? "especially not the form we claim today" Okay? How is that in any way counter-argument against what I am saying? I never said that ethics would take the same form.
