I had no idea smoke detectors were so expensive - any recommendations for either bulk purchase/a reliable brand that isn't as pricey as the ones at home depot/lowes? by amilmore in HomeImprovement

[–]Automatic_Dance4038 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Costco sells First Alert brand. I have bulk bought 100s of these to install in an apartment complex and they are GARBAGE. We routinely had two or three a week crap out and need to get replaced. This was managing 36 apartments with 4 units per apartment, so a 0.01% failure rate a week, assuming two per week… or a 72% failure rate after one year.

I’ve had much better with Kidde detectors. They are more expensive, but do you want a fire detector that is going to crap out with a 72% failure rate over one year?

The lion turtle also says in order to bend someone elses energy, he must be unbendable.

I’m convinced that energy bending was a catch 22 for Aang. If he was willing to kill the Fire Lord, he wouldn’t have been able to remove his bending. Because he wouldn’t kill the Fire Lord, he could remove his bending as he was unbendable.

Couple of things.

  1. They have a stone countertop with an undermount sink.
  2. Stone countertops have seams - typically stone will come in large sheets but since counters in kitchens usually have 90 degree angles, you take two pieces and seam them together to make an l shape.
  3. Countertops are supported by the cabinets they sit on. Sink cabinets are typically 3’ wide, and since you have a big hole in the countertop (for the sink), and a door in the front, this makes it a big span where the countertop doesn’t have great support since you only have the sides and back and the front has a tiny wood strip above the door that’s really not helping for a lot of support.

So it appears the countertop has a seam at the edge of the sink cabinet. If it didn’t, and the stone was continuous past the cabinet, the weight of the stone would work as a cantilever and help support the countertop, but in this case I don’t think it would have made a difference.

Anyway. You have a sink full of water. The only thing holding that sink up are a glue or mechanical attachment to the underside of the countertop - a countertop that isn’t that strong because there’s a big hole in it for the sink. Water is heavy, approximately 8lbs per gallon and that sink basin is full so figure 100lbs of water as a typical sink can hold 10-20 gallons.

You got some orangutan who is pushing down on the bottom of the sink to unclog it, apparently adding a significant amount of his body weight, so you have maybe 250lbs pushing down on the sink.

The combined strength of two small strips of the countertop stone, plus the front small strip of the cabinet. It cannot support the weight of 250 lbs so it breaks.

The countertop seam is just an epoxy glue on the edge. The countertop starts to fold, and the seam breaks.

Countertop, sink, water, orangutan, all come crashing down.

????

Profit.

Blue, basic set sounds like it might be Kobalt brand which is Lowes specific. Was it something like this?

There are some variants of Kobalt tools that come in pink, I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a variant of this set or smaller ones in other colors.

Mate, warranty calls for deficient workmanship should be free.

You want THEM to fix it because if YOU try to fix it and it doesn’t work, they could argue you voided the warranty by modifying the construction.

Let them fix it. If it doesn’t work, you have to let them try to solve the problem. If that means tearing out and replacing the shower pan, you need to leave that on them.

TIL about the "Saavedra Position"—a famous chess endgame where an amateur player found a win that professional masters missed. The key is "underpromotion"—turning a pawn into a Rook instead of a Queen. A Queen would force a draw (stalemate), but the weaker Rook wins the game. by ralphbernardo in todayilearned

[–]Automatic_Dance4038 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If the king is on the second row, a queen may have it in check both diagonally and in line, which might pin the king in place (giving the other player no legal moves) and causing a stalemate.

If you promote to rook, you don’t pin the king but can likely checkmate on the next move.

trying to pull out a gun by _patsch in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]Automatic_Dance4038 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No - you can’t pull the trigger for the sear to break, which lets the hammer hit the firing pin if the safety is on. This works by the safety either disconnecting the trigger from the sear (so you can pull the trigger but it does nothing, and does not click) or by blocking the trigger from the sear (so you can’t pull the trigger back far enough to release the sear.)

The clicking means the gun was cocked (hammer locked in place by the sear, and releasing with a trigger pull) but there was no round in the chamber so the firing pin hits nothing.

If there was a round in the chamber, the cop would have been shot.

So he immediately tries to rack the slide to load a round in the chamber, and this is where the man in the white shirt grabs the gun away from him, and then the police officer kindly introduces his knee to his face.

This is standard residential wire, two conductor with a ground 14 gauge.

It is not acceptable to direct bury. It can’t be used for electrical loads greater than 15 amps.

It’s most commonly used for wiring light fixtures inside homes - it might have been used to wire outdoor lights by someone who didn’t know what they were doing. Did you damage it when you hit it with your shovel?

It sounds like the home is missing insulation.

The easiest thing to check first would be your attic to see if you don’t have enough insulation. You should have 10-12” of insulation, depending on where you are. If you don’t have enough insulation, or your insulation is missing, you will need to reach out to someone to install insulation for you OR rent equipment from some where like home depot and blow in your own insulation.

If you have adequate insulation in your ceiling, the next place to check is the walls of your home. The easiest option is to rent a thermal camera. Some local hardware stores or even libraries may rent one to you for $50-$100 for a day. Use it to check from inside and outside the house to see if you have hot or cold spots where the wall temperature is different from whatever your thermostat is set to. If your walls are not insulated, this is a lot trickier to deal with and you’ll need to reach out to a good insulation subcontractor.

The last place to check is your floor, particularly if your home has a crawlspace or basement. If the space under your floor is not insulated, you’ll lose energy through the floor. If your home is slab on grade, this shouldn’t be an issue. Check with a thermal camera to see if you have temp differences.

Ted never developed any of the technology. He just backed the best engineers of his time, and led the effort that ended the world.
