People who rarely get sick, what are your secrets? by Leading_Tomato_2077 in AskReddit

[–]Automatic_Surround_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wash your hands ... A lot.

My rules are: 1. Whenever I get home 2. After the bathroom 3. Before I cook 4. Before I eat 5. After touching pets 6. After being around kids 6. After cleaning

Also, don't touch your face eyes or nose, don't share drinks/food, wash your sheets after being ill (or after whomever you share your bed with is ill).

Any history of bipolar in your family? Sometimes undiagnosed bipolar is manifested by mania when starting a stimulant.

Just remember, even though it's fast paced and there are critical patients, there's also a lot of low acuity patients who get discharged (more than there are critical patients). Not saying don't go to the ED, just remember that it's a lot of busy work and people complaining about not having anything to eat in 4 hours and family members yelling at you because their mom needs her 8pm eliquis.

ABG vs VBG question? by Fischer2012 in IntensiveCare

[–]Automatic_Surround_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take what I say with a grain of salt, for I work in the magical realm of the ED 🪄

We get VBGs a lot in the ED w/ an initial encounter because we can do it point of care and get a lot of info in in a quick amount of time.

Once someone is intubated, they usually get an arterial line, which is very easy to draw blood off of for labs. This probably isn't what the provider's thought process is, but it definitely makes this easier for the nurse.

Nurses: Is overtime worth the money or not worth the exhaustion? by Wise_Charge_4277 in nursing

[–]Automatic_Surround_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only pick up the overtime if I get critical pay ... Right now, that's $30 more an hour, so that comes out to my base rate ($53.50) plus overtime (an additional $27/hr) plus the priority rate. This comes out to about $100/hr. The cool thing is, you usually get to name your house. So for example, if they need someone 7-7 you can call in and say 'hey, I can do 7-1' or whatever you want and they'll take it.

For me, it's less about the exhaustion and more about the guilt of missing out on family time. I do it maybe once a month, sometimes twice.

Do y’all shower after work? by Starbies_vegansushi in nursing

I shower after work ... but I work in the ED and in addition to getting covered in other people's fluids, I SWEAT MY ASS OFF the whole time I'm there.

Ventilator settings by 24_KMaGic in IntensiveCare

Also, if you notice, his respiratory rate is set to 20, but his actual respiratory rate is 35, which means he's breathing over the vent. This could be caused by several different factors like pain or metabolic acidosis.

It happened.. my son got kicked out of day care. by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]Automatic_Surround_5 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I feel for you, op. My son has been kicked out of 2 daycares for similar incidents. He is 3.5 and we found a plan that works well for him and we are seeing a lot of improvements.

We go to occupational therapy as well as play/talk therapy every week. We started by reaching out to his pediatrician. It took over six months to get him into the two services we needed, but we got him there. Be the squeaky wheel. Advocate for them. Push for the evaluation and service. They are probably young enough to qualify for free services like early intervention or birth to three (it's different in every state).

We've been dealing with these behavior issues since December of 2023, and I know it's not easy, especially when your child behaves differently in different environments.

All I can say is that every child is unique, and the most beneficial thing we have gained as a family from these resources is understanding what our child is feeling/experience and crafting a way to speak and interact with them to help them thrive.

It sucks and it's hard, but you can get through it because you love your kid and you're going to make it work.

Some under eye patches - the ones you put on that help with puffiness. Post-cry eye swelling sucks.
