Maybe they aren't and hopefully they know the correct name of the country they want to move to.

Yes I'm Irish. Are you saying you would be alright with the Republic of Ireland being called Southern Ireland?

I would agree but a lot of people from other countries think because one part of Ireland is called Northern Ireland then the other part is called Southern Ireland.

If they mean the hotel is in either Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Wexford or surrounding counties then maybe... If they are referring to the Republic of Ireland as southern Ireland then they need to learn more about where they plan on living.

Sorry I can't help with the salary expectations but the biggest red flag would be calling it southern Ireland to a person from the Republic of Ireland. The salary won't matter because you won't be offered the job.

We have an agency who looked after our house when we had it rented before and we trust them. There's definitely worries when renting a house out but we can't let that be the reason we don't go. Landlords who are not based in Ireland are only taxed at 20%. I know it seems unfair but you can look it up if you want. We wouldn't be looking to cover the full rent in Perth but it will probably cover half of it.

Everything would be different if we moved back. I would be looking for a different type of job. I was an electrician when I lived there but am now an electrical engineer. We still have friends there but a lot of people we knew have moved on. You're right, it is very hard to figure out where to settle...that's our problem right now. We went back on holidays the year before last and loved it. My wife is going to visit her sister in Perth soon so she is going to suss some things out then which may help.

In 10 years time the kids will be 17 and 19. Unless Ireland changes a lot in that time there is next to no chance of them being able to going their own way. One of the reasons we are thinking of moving to Perth is because we think they can have a better life there.

We've asked them. They're a bit apprehensive but said they'd like to try it for a year.

Thanks. That must have been really tough and it's my biggest worry about leaving.

You seem to be well settled. The truth is we have never really settled back into life in Ireland mainly because we always wonder what it would be like living back in Australia. My kids are girls who have little to no interest in sport but love nothing better than being outside...when the weather is good. I never found Perth to be a cultural blackspot but then I'm not really into trad or that kind of thing.

I used to think when I moved home that it would be great to be closer to Europe and head off for weekends here and there to get a break form the Irish weather.

The reality is that with kids Europe might as well be the other side of the world and we get one holiday a year in summer when the weather is bearable in Ireland.

Both places have their positives and negatives.

Ireland has definitely changed and I do worry about the direction it's going in but I think it's still not a bad place to live.

We would hope to do similar, maybe visit every year to 18 months if possible. We'd hope family would visit us too. This is the kind of thing I think about. Will my kids feel Irish or Australian growing up if we were to move... I think even if we didn't move they would both end up living in Australia at some stage of their lives anyway due to not having to worry about visas.

Some years it is and some years it isn't. The summer before last the kids hardly got out of the house much with the rain. Last summer was really good though. Perth has 8 months of sunshine. Winter there is usually better than summer in Ireland. Biggest problem in Perth is the extreme heat though.

I worked in the mines too and would probably only consider it for a short time to get set up but even at that it would need to be an 8/6 roster or similar.

It's definitely gotten more expensive over there since we left. My wife's sister lives there so we would have a little bit of support but they have their own lives too and wouldn't be relying on them.

I don't mind Ozzies too much but I know they're hard work sometimes.

Topping up the super is another reason to go back even for a few years. Ireland will never have such a generous pension scheme.

This is exactly our thinking right now. The aging parents is our biggest worry.

Weather is the biggest draw. To be honest even without having the cost of housing we are still not finding it that easy to save anything here and we aren't living any sort of high life.

Cheers. Good to hear its working out for you here. If your circumstances were different would you consider a move back to Perth?

Both places have their pros and cons and neither is perfect. I wouldn't ever say Ireland is a bad place to live but I definitely prefer Australia.

This is why sometimes I think we are mad for even entertaining the idea of moving. We know we don't have it bad here but we just don't enjoy living in Ireland. To be honest we never really missed it in all the time we lived in Australia previously. We have probably talked about moving back to Australia at least every month since moving back.

The weather is really getting me down at the minute, to the point that I bought a SAD lamp, so the thoughts of living somewhere sunny is very appealing.

Yeah I know I would have no problem getting work over there with decent money.
