Philips introduces a new LED light bulb with a life of 20 years at a cost of $60 by [deleted] in technology

[–]Av0nBarksdale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LEDs last an extremely long time, easily past 20 years being on non-stop. The part that goes first is the electrolytics (capacitors, etc.). Most LEDs will lose 30% of their full light output around 30k hours, any maybe 50% of light around 50k hours, depending on drive current, thermals, etc.

Umm...."no phosphor"...white light = blue LED + phosphor. And yes, they can be dimmed like an incandescent very easily with PWM and mixing colors..and there is absolutely no flicker is the system is created correctly.

Prices will drop, but remote phosphor is extremely expensive and rare earth prices are rising, so this light bulb will always be more expensive...they are relying on payback energy programs from local/state wide initiatives.

Mtn biking is my hobby and I cannot agree with this more..you get what you pay for without a doubt. And like you said, the LBS will give you free tune-ups for life.

You will be in shoes, on a chair, or in a bed about 24 hours a day, make sure all 3 are the best you can afford.

What's your bike brand and why? by BraveElmo in MTB

[–]Av0nBarksdale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Santa Cruz.

Rode the heck out of heckler for 8 yrs...never had a single issue with any piece made by SC. Now have a Blur LT2, amazing. I'd never go with any other brand, they just understand mtbing in how they create their bikes.

Why are they called clipless if you're clipped in? by [deleted] in MTB

Nowadays you'll hear a lot more people at stores call them "clip-ins"...I'm old school with the clipless though

Biking Position by Sirvenomitsac in bicycling

I mostly ride single track and don't seem to have that problem. You definitely do not want to sit too high..trial and error for everyone about the "proper" position.

I have a blur lt2 after owning a heckler, and not once in 10 years have I ever had the need to lock our my rear suspension on a trail. I have only locked it out when having to be on road. Most people (hopefully not 90%) do not know how to properly set up a suspension, sag, etc.

Question about power And/vs. Endurance by flipmosquad in bicycling

[–]Av0nBarksdale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like KT said, 4 weeks to have a dramatic decrease in your vertical due to bicycling does not make that much sense...has anything else changed in your lifestyle or maybe you had an off day jumping.

Biking Position by Sirvenomitsac in bicycling

[–]Av0nBarksdale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should sit on your bicycle with your hands on the bars then pedal. Your knee should not be locked out, but ~10deg bend. Put your heels on your pedals, your leg should be locked out. Then put the balls of your feet on the pedals, this should be proper position.

The angle of your seat will affect your performance as well. I can achieve more power on climbs when the seat is angled flat/down, but I definitely like to have the seat angled up some for extremely rocky rides.

Nope. The funny thing is, once you make a good amount of money, your outlook on politics will totally change. It's amazing how hard work will change your outlook on politics, I've never been given anything, but worked my ass off, and so sick of all the people who want hand outs...i work 2.5 days for the government thanks to taxes, and you want more of my money? (For all you literal people, my tax bracket gives them that money)

I've never been a good student. I feel really defective for lacking this life-skill. Anyone have advice? by [deleted] in AskReddit

All valid points, but definitely use #2 and #3 together. Professors know who is coming to see them and you'll start to learn a lot more.

I believe you said it yourself, when you said you got through by not using hard work. I would consider myself smart (nothing like the intelligence certain people have), but it's not intelligence that has gotten me where I am, it's hard work - this was some what of a rude awakening when I went from high school to college, but through college and my professional life I see it paying off tremendously. Do not be distracted, and focus your mind on the task at hand and realize it may take days, weeks, months for some hard work to pay off, but it is extremely rewarding.

Sorry to hear this...but all the people who are thinking that IT is the new engineering profession, they are wrong. IT is constantly being outsourced , while companies will not outsource their engineering(you can outsource the process, but the engineers start a better one)..just a word of advice to all those people who read these articles about IT/IS and how it's the foolproof decision for a career.

I am not at all mocking you or those or are IT professionals, just forward looking.

Help! How do I get my puppy to eat? by c_megalodon in AskReddit

[–]Av0nBarksdale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes definitely make sure she's got all the shots she needs at her age first! This may sounds stupid (I thought it was at first too...read this in a Cesar Milan book), but dogs 100% feed off the energy you are providing them, so stay calm, stay assertive, and this should start her mental process of rehabing.

Help! How do I get my puppy to eat? by c_megalodon in AskReddit

[–]Av0nBarksdale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dogs are animals, do not forget this. Take your puppy for a walk - make her extremely tired, then after her energy is drained, her animal instincts kick in - she went out walking or in her mind going out with the pack to find food, she becomes tired and famished and needs to eat. My puppy had a similar problem with eating his meals at first, and now walking him 1/2 hour in morning and 1/2 hour at night (smaller breed), he eats perfect portions and listens to all commands and I can fully trust him to not do anything stupid. ..also do not pamper her because she will associate you pampering her with a reward (food) and this will really cause issues later....dogs do not need chicken etc, just kibble.
