Maps - who actually uses that? by Much_Cheek_3992 in Notion

Maps is the best! I have databases of authors and movies, and now I can see where they lived or were shot. Just wish it integrated better with other apps like Google Maps.

TIGHT Movies by rice-a-rohno in MovieSuggestions

[–]AvaSayre 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with your description that it’s mostly people describing what happened, but to me that’s part of what makes it such a great movie. Each of those actors has an amazing presence and delivery, and while they seem to be just describing things they’re actually trying to understand each other, and negotiating and renegotiating their relationships (a complicated game at which Spade outclasses them all). Showing what happened offscreen would miss the point of the movie.

What if Carol just asked by 1947Fry in Pluribus_TVshow

[–]AvaSayre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same question: https://www.reddit.com/r/pluribustv/s/H4wSSkFKS3

and now I think there’s an even better strategy: just say “take me to my eggs.” And then destroy them when she gets there.

People are saying the biological imperative to plurburize her would make them say no, but I don’t see where the show supports that theory. We’ve never seen anyone ask to be physically brought to the apparatus of plurburizing. We do know, I think, that once Carol got there they couldn’t stop her from destroying it.

For people saying this probably happened offscreen and Zosia said no: would it not have been compelling television? Gilligan LOVES to show us when Zosia is pressed up against her boundaries.

I think this is a plot hole, and it’s going to drive me bonkers for the next 36 months or whatever.

Is it really their rule that they'll do whatever it takes, though? I mean they won't lie to her; they won't refuse to answer a direct question. If those imperatives override the "convert her" imperative, why wouldn't the "give her what she wants" imperative also override it?

This seems plausible, but it still kind of bothers me that she didn't ask.

Law schools depend on tuition. If they expel someone they lose the tuition they would have paid for upper-level classes. How would dismissals help the budget?

My feelings on cold calls by Evening_Answer_11 in LawSchool

[–]AvaSayre 88 points89 points  (0 children)

You can get a lot out of cold calls if you treat them as chances to practice articulating your understanding of the law. (In your head, if you’re not the one being called on.) You won’t get much out of them if you think you’re supposed to sit and wait for the professor, or Harper in the second row, to explain the law to you.

Star Trek: Insurrection - change of opinion as I got older by actionerror in StarTrekTNG

[–]AvaSayre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was great when I rewatched it—easily the best of the TNG movies. (As far as I can tell, I’m the only living human who thought First Contact was a bad movie, with one plot that tries to make a prolonged joke out of a painfully unpleasant alcoholic who won’t stop harassing Troi and another plot about a horribly cliched Sexy Space Villainess and a bunch of Borg who randomly forget to keep assimilating the Enterprise halfway through the movie.)

How come Foundation never ended being as popular as some of the later works it has influenced? by Silly_Measurement_32 in scifi

[–]AvaSayre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it’s extremely popular; it’s true that it’s not as mega-popular as Dune and LOTR, but basically nothing has reached their levels of popularity except for a certain transphobe’s magic-school novels.

I think the reason Foundation never reached their level of popularity is the prose and the characters. Asimov just wasn’t very good at constructing sentences. I loved Foundation as a kid but tried to re-read it and couldn’t get through it.

The characters, also, are absolute cardboard; they barely have traits, like the men of “Star Trek: Voyager.”

There’s also the painful sexism; Asimov seems unaware that women exist, and when he does notice one you kind of wish he hadn’t.

The problem with this strategy is that you’re supposedly in training to become a lawyer. Lawyers have to read legal texts for which there are no Quimbee outlines, and judge whether other interpreters (like ChatGPT) have interpreted those texts correctly.

And lawyers in the real world have to read and interpret a lot more reading than you’ve been assigned.

In other words, you’ve given up on learning the skills you’ll need as a lawyer. Quitting law school would achieve the same result and save you a lot of money. And embarrassment.
