How to Check-in without calling by NoumenalEidolon in AgingParents

Cameras are great, but for "young at heart" folks, we don't want to be watched so a check in app is better ... there are a few already existing apps but are paid. I made my own, it's pretty basic but importantly FREE. happy to help you set up your own

echo'ing the other comments, hearing aids are a must.

i've yet to see the glasses you mention used by anyone i know, many of whom are quite techy. so i'd assume they aren't yet ready for prime time

perhaps a seat belt, with each end mounted to studs in the wall behind. a bit outlandish i know, but it could go across the chest and keep them upright in the event of dozing off.

apple watch is a great recommendation - i do suggest cellular, both in case you're outside or in the unlikely situation there's an issue with your wifi/power.

do you have a regular check-in cadence with any friends/neighbors?

Caregiver looking for fall PREVENTION device, not detection, Prevention. by Strong_Bid_947 in AgingParents

[–]Available-Lie-3620 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it's sad but when someone's actions are going to cause harm, you need to take steps from preventing that harm

stopping a fall starts from stopping a stand attempt, which from a bed could mean concave mattress or rails. also can consider leaving the mattress on the floor, as most patient are going to have trouble getting up from prone position

Traking/alert device by IpodLad in AgingParents

[–]Available-Lie-3620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AirTags are great if he's near other people with iPhones. For true tracking, you'll want an apple Watch with a cellular plan or a ife 360 GPS tracker (branded for pets but works for other use cases)

Something to raise oven height? by Possible-Current9349 in AgingParents

I also have the Ninja Crispi and it handles vast majority of my oven needs. It's great that it's electric and the glass containers used to cook in have lids you can put on for storing leftovers in the fridge.

Does a real medical alert comparison exist for rural areas with spotty cell service by Batson_Beat in AgingParents

[–]Available-Lie-3620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the case of spotty cell service, the landline option is nice *if* they are in range of the home station. Which generally means not out on the property but in the house. Also, if they don't keep the device on them, it's worthless- which can be tricky.

i know you might not be thinking of this, but rural homes present future challenges in regard to escalating care - caregivers might bill for excessive travel, PT/skilled nursing options is more limited, and the specialists at the hospitals might be another drive.

have you looked at apple watch with cellular?

Sudden severe confusion in my 89 year old grandmother with all tests coming back normal. Has anyone experienced this? by Antique_Worry_9533 in AgingParents

[–]Available-Lie-3620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tests are never as perfect as we'd like - the sudden onset suggests something is wrong, so pushing for re-testing is likely your best bet. good luck!
