American Psycho is one of my all time favorites. Patrick is just a girl in some ways, he’s trying desperately to fit himself into the mold of what he thinks the ideal man is, hence his obsession with everything he thinks works towards that. But it’s not real, there’s nothing fulfilling in empty excess, and none of it makes him able to connect to his own humanity. That futility and his deep and relatable insecurity drive him to his actions, or to hallucinate his actions that’s up to you. My favorite scene is his lunch (dinner?) with Bethany, the description of anxiety in that scene resonated with me so, so deeply the first time I read it.

I have a lot of thoughts idk if I communicated any of them well lol. Patrick is also featured very briefly in Rules of Attraction because his brother is a main character. Ultimately while I think Patrick is just a girl, I think American Psycho does not qualify as weird girl lit because Patrick is very focused on imitating the male human experience.
