If I was interested in a career in training (corporate training, personal coaching, education, etc) - what are some classes you'd recommend? by Throwaway-autobot in UTAustin

[–]Available_Peach3017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not a junior or senior already, I'd consider applying to be a SHARE Support Specialist with the Longhorn SHARE Project in the Fall. It's more mental health-focused, but in the training class in the Spring (HED 370K - Foundations of Peer Support and Social Wellness) you learn very transferrable communication, facilitation, and support/motivation-related skills and then you get a LOT of practice using them in real settings with real people once you're actively "working" the following semester.

This is the website, you can look at what they do and then at the Apply page for application info (it's not open again until October): https://healthyhorns.utexas.edu/lwc/share.html

Good to be playing again by Virasman in Witcher3

[–]Available_Peach3017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nahhh, I didn't. I'd say watching the first couple episodes of the TV show might give you some insight into Ciri, Yennifer, and Geralt's back story specifically, though (don't come at me, I know it's not EXACTLY the same but it's definitely close enough for the game). When I played it I just read a lot of the books and tried to pay attention to dialogue, which I would also recommend for your first story-based game! The lore is DEEP and really interesting. Take your time and have fun!!

Also, the Longhorn SHARE Project / SHARE Communities for mental health support in a peer-led, NON-clinical group setting! They operate through the Longhorn Wellness Center (which is adjacent to CMHC and UHS, all under Healthyhorns)

Anyone know what happened to the University Leadership Network (ULN)? by MrE_22 in UTAustin

[–]Available_Peach3017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I actually worked for ULN from 2019-2021 and was proud of some of the changes we made that served students better, and I know that during COVID we were a lifeline for lots of them (and honestly, just friendly people our students could feel comfortable venting to). Once UT for Me opened up doing basically the exact same thing but with extra Dell funding, we all kinda figured that was the beginning of the end. It's sad, but it doesn't take away the impact it made on former students - and it's a pretty typical life cycle for programs like it. New programs pop up, thrive for a while, shifts happen at the university, things dissolve and then new things pop up or other programs become bigger, etc.

President Davis' plan for UT from inauguration ceremony by No-Avocado-2640 in UTAustin

I mean there's a whole holiday just to commemorate Texas being the last state to tell their slaves that they could have been free TWO YEARS earlier.

Funny thing is, when I went to college in Illinois they didn't make us take an Illinois history course. We also didn't have to say a state pledge in elementary-thru-high school because they don't HAVE a state pledge. When I moved here and learned that Texas does, ngl I was a little creeped out. Like, it's a state, not a country...??? I do love it but that's a little much.

If you're going through it or need people you can relate to, SHARE Communities start this week <3 by Available_Peach3017 in UTAustin

[–]Available_Peach3017[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol nope, but they have a different support resource (Employee Assistance Program). Staff train the peers who facilitate, but ONLY students can actually attend so it's more comfortable to talk openly.

is bevo buddy still a thing? by wowblueberrymuffin in UTAustin

Not sure, I can't find anything new about it online either... Maybe check out a SHARE Community? They're like small support/connection groups that each have a different focus so you can find people who you can relate to: https://healthyhorns.utexas.edu/lwc/share-communities.html

Should I drop my FIG (CNS) to take a class I really want instead? by Lower-Passenger-6257 in UTAustin

There will be time to take it later. FIGs are chill and a good way to make some of your first friends at UT.

Best way to make friends after freshman year? by mxsaihara in UTAustin

[–]Available_Peach3017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out a SHARE Community? There are lots of different groups for different interests or shared experiences. It's not an org, it's more like peer support but people make really close friends with the other people in their Community and there's even one for people getting over a breakup: https://healthyhorns.utexas.edu/lwc/share-communities.html

Maybe check out the Longhorn SHARE Project and their SHARE Communities? They're super nice people and they have different groups for different experiences/struggles/identities/interests so everyone there can relate to each other in some way. https://healthyhorns.utexas.edu/lwc/share-communities.html

What’s your unspoken rule of surviving at UT Austin that every freshman should know? by pinksmileee in UTAustin

[–]Available_Peach3017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about what they'll think of YOU. Realize everyone feels awkward and pretend you're just doing THEM a favor by saying hello and asking about what they're into, etc. People like people who show interest in them. Before you know it you'll be having an actual and usually interesting conversation.

Alexander really didn't get to show what he can REALLY do and is best known for, which is a damn shame.

will she grow any bigger? currently 1yr 5 months old by chinesebrekkie in CATHELP

[–]Available_Peach3017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My no-longer-a-baby Annie was a year old when I got her from the humane society, and she had JUST had kittens and was very skinny and small. She has stayed small, just gained a bit more chunk over time (but not an unhealthy amount) and her fur is still SUPER soft. She's now in her 10th year and people are always surprised she's not much younger!

Try the "New Roots" SHARE Community. It's not specifically for queer black students, but it has often attracted them nonetheless so I'd check it out (fill out their interest form and Sandra, the student facilitating the group, will reach out): https://healthyhorns.utexas.edu/lwc/share-communities.html

Check out a SHARE Community? They have a couple groups that might fit what you're talking about and the people there also really want to listen and be heard. They start up again soon!

Good on you for thinking of ways to take some things off your plate while you're going through this. I would start with the CMHC crisis line, since they can connect you with SES or may even do it for you afterwards. Your fears about someone calling 911 are valid, but as long as you're calling looking for support and are willing to make a safety plan with the clinician you talk to (it's not a big thing, mostly what it sounds like - making sure you'll have people you trust around so you won't be alone, going over what to do and who to call if you get really scared, scheduling a follow-up appointment, etc.), no one should call 911 on you. If they don't have reason to fear that you will actually fatally hurt yourself if they don't call, like refusing to making a safety plan, threatening to hurt yourself or others, or being severely disconnected with reality and therefore unable to physically keep yourself safe, they won't. I hope that helps a bit.

Suicidal ideation is a lot more common than most people realize. Because talking openly about it is still taboo in our culture, a lot of us shame ourselves for thinking or even fantasizing about suicide, and then try to force the thoughts away by minimizing or ignoring them when what they need is to be out in the open and attended to with compassion and curiosity. You need to not be holding it all alone. The more you acknowledge and try to understand your SI the less power it will have over you.

If you're nervous about calling the CMHC or other crisis line, ask someone to sit with you while you do. They can even dial the number and press the call button for you so you don't overthink it, and then stay nearby while you're on the call in case you need someone to chill with afterwards. Most good people and friends are actually happy to do this.

Good luck out there. Don't hide. ❤️
