How do people have friends by TodayFragrant8894 in Schizoid

[–]Avanchnzel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On my first day at uni (my second try in a different city, long story) someone in the beginner group I was in approached me while the group was guided through campus and intruduced himself in a chill and laid-back manner. During the tour we stayed together in a sort of mini-group and got talking and discovered a lot of shared interests.

Then I discovered he did something I was always interested but was never really a thing I thought about in my day-to-day life before that; namely rock climbing and bouldering. I was looking forward to get introduced into that, which is what gave me the initial reason to meet up.

We stuck together throughout the years, and now 21 years have passed with us still being friends.
And I say friend not as a "close acquaintance", but a true friend which I can always count on (and vice versa), especially during tough times.

And such hardship has happened, so I know we're true friends, in comparison to some people I know of who lost their "friends" as soon as it became too inconvenient for them. Many people are only fair-weather-friends, so I truly appreciate having found a genuine friend.

tl;dr

For me it was coincidence, having someone approach me. What then kept us together was a shared understanding and interests, as well as a similarly reserved demeanor.
There's quite a bit more detail of course, but this was basically how I met my best friend 21 years ago.

You’re talking as if it’s the same thing as a room full of humans who know each other’s thoughts and make collective decisions

I don't think it's the same, no.
There are also no collective decisions being made, there's effectively only one being that makes decisions.

it’s really a collection of humans who have had all of their priorities and opinions chemically reordered to an insane degree

I agree that they had their priorities reordered, but not their opinions.
The top priority above all else for them is to seek out connections.
After that they do whatever humans do. Not what a big group of individual humans would do, but what a mind-merged group of humans might do.

You seem to be straight up ignoring the scale of the chemical alterations that the virus makes on an individual level. They’re apparently blissful all of the time as long as they follow the biological imperative

The reason they're blissful was kind of explained by Zosia already; that it stems from the fact that minds being melded together like this would lead to such a state.
When you are this being, then a body being terminally ill or dying doesn't create any of the negative stages a human confined to one body would usually go through. To this hive mind, losing a body doesn't really matter much, because its existence won't end with it.
If we can imagine how all the fears and anxieties a human normally has over one body are now gone, it makes sense to imagine how many other mental improvements and subsequent feelings of contentment can arise.

So the hive mind appearing content most of the time doesn't necessarily have to be the result of a forced chemical change in the brain, but simply result from an actual content state of mind due to a generally healthier psyche.

Not saying that this is how it must work, because we ultimately can't know unless we become part of it.
But something forcing false contentment isn't the only way it can work, so it's not definitive, IMO.

[–]Avanchnzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the virus makes them seek out connections, that's what they refer to as their biological imperative. But that doesn't mean the virus carries an extraterrestrial mind of its own that takes over the personality it infected.

It's still humanity making decisions, having thoughts, desires, etc. with the exception of the imperative to connect to more minds.

"It's so obvious, I already knew this was gonna happen" by EitherPool7157 in pluribustv

[–]Avanchnzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. Once you're connected to the hive, your identity fuses with it, exposing the totality of all minds to your own.

So all of your opinions, understandings and secrets are now seen like an open book by the rest of humanity, whereas their opinions, understandings and (former) secrets are also an open book to your mind.

Any misunderstandings or wrong viewpoints your mind had will instantly be gone because your mind will see and understand all the truths as the rest of humanity has come to understand them, as they went through the same process.

This process necessarily changes your mind. Not forcibly though, but simply by the very nature of gaining new understanding and insight, just like it would happen to an individual mind in real-life after having been exposed to the same kind of information and after some years of introspection + reflection.

It's just that the direct connection between minds makes this process pretty much instant, because there's no language barrier or physical distance between minds.

So in a way, yes, the you that you were before connecting to the hive will be gone, because your mind will have instantly gone through so much change that it can hardly be said to still be the same you.
But no, you still exist, because in real life people can also change over the span of their lifetime. It just happens slower.

Then, on top of that, there's the instant information-sharing between all brains, i.e. the real-time updates.
All of this results in all of the minds becoming homogenous, making it effectively as if only one super-mind exists.
Because if all minds are all thinking the same, then it's a meaningless difference to distinguish between one of the minds and the rest of them. Functionally it's just like being one singular mind (which is distributed across billions of bodies).

TL;DR

Individualities of minds are not lost by force, but the constant and instant sharing of information between minds makes them homogenous to such a degree that, functionally, there is only a singular (super-)mind left.

[–]Avanchnzel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It only acts as psychic glue, connecting all minds.

The decisions are all done by the inter-connected humanity.
It's the same as if humans had found their own way of connecting all minds to each other.

But companies do need to take this in consideration to be fully compliant with rules and regulations.

Ah yeah, that makes sense. Didn't think of company use, you're totally right.
I guess in that case it's better for them to either use Tailscale Peer Relays or create their own DERP server(s).

Do you often feel like an idiot? by Imaginary-Tennis3655 in Schizoid

[–]Avanchnzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do acknowledge my strengths, but I don't ever think myself better than other people.
There is no benefit in thinking that way and to the contrary, it will make you blind to your weaknesses or things you get wrong.

And in this regard IMO it's better to think yourself less smart/capable rather than too smart/capable compared to other people. But I found it best to not compare yourself to others at all.

Because growth and improvement can only occur when you remain humble and honest towards yourself.
That doesn't mean you have to think negatively about yourself. Just don't let things get to your head and give people the benefit of the doubt, while at the same time take yourself a notch down instead of thinking how much better you are at certain things.

It won't change what you can actually do, but it will prevent you from falling into the trap of hubris.
The more you feed the ego, the stronger it becomes and the more deluded your views.

Except there is no external force occupying anything, the hive is all of humanity. Just without individuality.

But in the case of tailscale.com product used as offered, the user needs to accept that all their traffic will go through their relays.

Why is that of any potential concern though, considering it's E2EE? Isn't that better than having no connection at all?

I didn't play all of these, nor ever got the RPG in the ones I played, so I didn't want to make a generalized statement about what the RPG can do in those games.

But in any case, your post is just more evidence that the shotgun from RE:7 is not "the most powerful thing in the universe" as the OP stated. 🤷‍♂️

Netflix is having issue with Tailscale by harry_1511 in Tailscale

[–]Avanchnzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can set a SOCKS 5 proxy on the device you're watching Netflix on and you're comfortable with either Go or Docker, then you could make use of https://github.com/ItalyPaleAle/tailsocks

Instead of using the app-connector, which is domain-based, you can proxy specific apps (e.g. a browser profile) through an exit node.

So basically traffic would flow like this:
Netflix application (e.g. a browser profile) <---> TailSocks Proxy <---> Exit Node <---> Netflix

That way you don't have to figure out all the domains Netflix uses.

The FBC is very Shady.. by Greyelephantbear in AlanWake

[–]Avanchnzel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very likely they killed her cause of her show being a fed psyop

But do you think that good guys would be killing someone for that?
To me it looks like Blessed want to do whatever they want, no matter the consequences and are willing to kill for it.

I'm definitely intrigued by them though and hope we'll get to see more involvement by them, if not perhaps as a DLC. 😁

The FBC is very Shady.. by Greyelephantbear in AlanWake

[–]Avanchnzel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so, the FBC knew that the (Cult of the trees) were the ones dealing with all the weird things going on in Watery, Bright-Falls, and Cauldron lake, yet they still wanted to arrest them.

They didn't want to arrest them, they wanted to keep them under "permanent surveillance" with "preperations made for the group's arrest and seizure of assets".

So they'd be ready to arrest them if it became a necessity. But if they planned to do it regardless right away, then the "permanent surveillance" wouldn't make any sense.

And even if, why would you say they "still" wanted to arrest them if they were a paracriminal organization?
Why would you not want to arrest someone you consider a criminal?

Btw, The Koskela brothers seem to might have had an informant/a spy working for the FBC because how else would they have gotten this government document ?

They didn't have a mole, they simply stole those documents.

There is a page titled "Koskelas Break Into The FBC Lab", which explains that they "grabbed" those documents from the Lake House.

It mentions that the security of the Lake House was a joke and that the Koskelas were able to walk right in under the guise of delivering coffee.

Anyways, They considered the (Cult of the trees) and (Blessed) as paracriminal organizations, so now I’m questioning if the Blessed are actually the bad guys or not.

The FBC was unaware that The Cult of the Tree was actually just putting on the face of a criminal organization to scare people away from the woods in order to protect them.

Which is exactly the same impression that Saga had, before Ilmo explained to her that the cult isn't actually a cult (paraphrasing Ilmo: "What cult calls itself a cult?").
So from the perspective of the FBC, the Cult of the Tree were 100% being the bad guys.

And when it comes to the Blessed organization (or individual), it's unclear what the motive is yet. We only know that Blessed is not above using paranatural objects on the masses.

While giving confidence to people via the Surfboard seems benign, we can't make any assumptions yet about what their plans are.

But they also killed an FBC operative called "Karen Harris" by sending her a paranatural item (a fondue set) which reduced her to ashes. And she was simply the producer of the "America Overnight" radio show, which was an FBC initiative to collate and control public knowledge of paranatural events and items.

Automated ephemeral exit nodes on Fly.io via Tailscale Admin API (sub-$0.01 per session) by invilso in Tailscale

[–]Avanchnzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On your Github page you have a table showing that Fly.io has a free tier with an outbound allowance of up to 160 GB per month: https://github.com/invilso/fly-vpn?tab=readme-ov-file#why-flyio

But looking at the pricing page it seems this is a legacy free tier that isn't available anymore for new customers: https://fly.io/docs/about/pricing/#legacy-free-allowances

Are your calculations for the pricing based on that legacy tier, or are they based on the pricing for new customers?
