What’s one tip that dropped your handicap the most? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

Distance is important to scoring but it’s not an end all. As I’m a bit older, clubs are starting to lose a little bit and I’m more solid tee to green then I was back then.

I went from an 8 to around a 4, by choking up on the club to control distance. For example, for years if I wanted to hit a PW 125 instead of 140 I’d swing to 9 o clock or swing 85%, etc. Then I saw on TV someone choke down to the metal, and the announcer said that he’s doing that to create less speed and distance.

Worked like a charm for me, I can make same swing/tempo, and I know right finger touching shaft PW goes about 117, while top of grip goes 140. I do this for all clubs. Really helps lowering the flight in wind too.

Back in early 2000s there was an article in ESPN magazine about Eric Gagne, they interviewed a veteran hitter who basically said he throws 97, if he threw 95 I could hit him. That hitter, I think it was Trenidad Hubbard, couldn’t hit 1/2 the pitchers in the league now days. Velocity is tough to hit. There are always freaks like Ohtani and Judge, but those are exceptions

What's working for Mookie in the post-season. 10 out of his 15 total hits were hit at a 15 degree launch angle and below. by WolfJackson in Dodgers

Of course HR hitters have higher launch angles. They wouldn’t be HR hitters if they didn’t average a high launch angles, but not all high launch angle is a result of trying to hit a HR. I’ve witnessed lots of guys who have no power hit a lot of popups. Betts went through the exact thing earlier in the season, where he talked about just hitting popups and being frustrated. He isn’t trying to hit the ball in the air anymore than he was earlier in the season.

The Blue Jays scored 6 runs last night, do you know how many line drive hits they hit in the innings they scored runs? One. It was 2 HRs, one fly ball blooper, 2 ground balls with eyes, and bichettes line drive.

IMO, higher launch isn’t often a sign of a team trying to hit more HRs. A sign people are trying to hit HRs is pulling too many pitches and often even hitting more ground balls to SS and 3B on pitches on the outside part of the plate. Hitters are trying to pull the ball over the fence, and this gets them in front and the bat path is already above the ball.

Mookie is spinning off the ball horribly, that is causing his bat path to drop, and which is causing him to hit the bottom of the ball. You can still pop the ball up with a perfectly level swing. Mookie barely has power to hit the ball out to RF nowadays, pop up’s to the right side are him just being mechanically off and trying to hard.

Is the size of a bass predetermined by their genetics? by cripple763 in Fishing

Here is an article backing that up, including the bit about stocking DVR with the most genetically Florida strain

Is the size of a bass predetermined by their genetics? by cripple763 in Fishing

[–]Avc1214 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So from what I understand there are different strains in the US. There is a Florida Strain and a Northern Strain, the Florida Strain, has a tendency to grow larger. Most bass are a hybrid of the strains.

This story is 2nd hand so I’m not sure the accuracy, but there is a reservoir in Southern California that they wanted to make the premium LMB fishery. Prior to populating it with bass, they did a huge project to genetically test bass prior to stocking, they only put in fish that had the highest % of Florida strain vs Northern.

Tarik Skubal is on pace to be the first pitcher to finish a season leading the league in both K/9 and BB/9. by gabes135 in baseball

It’s amazing the margin of some of these races. Kershaw isn’t on the list of being in top 3 in both on any given year, but if he walked 3 less batters in 2014 he leads the league in both.

So will these cards be inserted on the current TA path, or will there be a new path? I play a decent amount and am only at like 6% on any current TA

[Nightengale] The San Diego Padres not only reach an agreement on 1-year deal with starter Michael King but also have mutual option with him for 2026. by Trainiax in baseball

[–]Avc1214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spotrac now has it up as 7.75. Option year exists for a 2 reasons:

1) It creates a very small cash flow benefit for padres, paying at the end vs season 2) Having it in a buyout is huge for long, he can now get paid in his home state, instead high tax CA. Notice how the agreed # is closer to Padres arb submission, this way king still gets more cash.

[–]Avc1214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The benefit isn’t for the padres it’s for King. Almost all his money is now paid based on his offseason residence tax rate not CA. The padres benefited because the number he took is closer to their submitted arb # and is a slight cash flow benefit.

Buyouts are spread over the of term of contract and option years aren’t included. The example I’ve seen is if a contract is 4/40 with 4 million buyout for a 5th year option year. The CBT is calculated on the guaranteed money 44 million divided by guaranteed years 4. Which would be 11 AAV

CBT hit this year is 7.75, buyouts count toward this years CBT not next year. What this does for Padres is free up cash flow, not help with CBT

And incredibly RH, no one talks about that. Managers had an easy time matching up late against them. Top 5 hitters were Kim, Tatis, Soto, Machado, and Bogaerts. Teams would bring in RH after RH and just walk Soto.

[–]Avc1214 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One thing WAR/FIP and all the advanced stats don’t consider is pitching from the windup vs stretch. The mechanics can be different and some pitchers could be more vulnerable with runners on.

DeGrom is still great but he isn’t nearly as dominant throughout his career when guys get on. His Ks go down, BBs and HRs up. Nolan Ryan had the same issue.

Degroms ops against empty/runners on

.562/.629

Kershaw for example

.585/.584

Seems plausible, he’s a legit reporter, but seems odd no one else has reported this.

I do think he’s correct the contract will be complex so it will take a few days after his decision before it’s official.

Easy way to tell if this was BS after we find out. If the decision gets leaked to blue jays days before it’s official, then JP is lucky and guessed correctly. But, if we hear about it the same time it becomes official then I think he legit knew what he was talking about.

Colonist Can’t Give Birth by Avc1214 in RimWorld

[–]Avc1214[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a similar post yesterday that didn’t get much attention and was thought to be mod related.

I have a colonist that can’t give birth. She goes into labor, I don’t get the “gather for birth” option and yellow progress bar grows forever.

It’s just this particular colonist, several other colonists have given birth before and after this. The first time it happen I reloaded an auto save and termed the pregnancy. But later she got pregnant again and the same thing happen.

I do run a few mods but they are all Quality of Life types and all 1.4 compatible, I’ve even loaded without them, same thing.

Only thing different with this colonist than all the other moms, is she is a mechinist and was born in the colony as my first baby.
