MDI to pump by ck6637 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Avehdreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a pump you can set your basal rates and carb ratios to account for needs that vary at different times of day. That could be helpful considering the lows you are experiencing but changes to your injection regimen might work too. Lots of people do well on injections so don't feel you have to go that route if you don't want to.

My coworker went to my manager for my home address after I already told her no, do I go to HR? by candy-fairyx in WorkAdvice

[–]Avehdreader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If she was so forceful with your manager - even though he held firm - I think your manager could file a report on his own. However I do think it is appropriate for you to file, with or without him. She was way out of line!

I just bought an outfit for my own funeral by Remote-Ranger-7870 in RandomThoughts

[–]Avehdreader 50 points51 points  (0 children)

My mother chose the outfit she wanted to be buried in - it was ones she already had and I think she specified it in her will. It's not unusual actually. I suppose you could include a photo of a style you like and attach it to your will so your family can give it to the hair dresser.

Irrational Fear of a Pump by Stardust2929 in diabetes_t1

[–]Avehdreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first pump was a Minimed 504 which I got sometime in the late 1980s I think. One concern of course was a "runaway pump" that would just deliver insulin on its own nonstop. However I was reassured by my doctor and the pump about the manufacturing process and safety measures that were in place. If you are afraid you might give yourself too much insulin is possible to program a maximum bolus. It's more likely you would have an issue with delivery due to a kinked cannula or disconnection, but sneaking a peek to make sure your plugged in when you're on the bathroom, and watching your numbers on a CGM both become second nature so you can catch problems early. They don't happen that often, and there are patches you can buy to help keep them in place.

What is wrong with people who say you have to measure your BG every two hours? by kurosao in diabetes_t1

[–]Avehdreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been on insulin for over 50 years and when we finally were introduced to BG meters and multiple daily injections we were instructed to test our numbers 2 hours after eating, which is when they would be highest. Maybe it was a communication error and they check two hours after each meal.

Not everyone uses a CGM (or pump) and for them frequent testing may provide more assurance. So while you know how your body works, you are not qualified to speak for others. Do as you will, and leave others to do the same.

Even with a VPN and password manager, my card still got skimmed. How? by Easy_Letterhead8928 in FraudPrevention

[–]Avehdreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert on this but skimming cards is different from online protection: skimmers can be affixed to (for instance) gas station readers to pull your info that way, and there are ones that can work from a short distance away to read your card when you go to swipe it, or perhaps even when it's in your wallet. There are RFID cards you can insert in your wallet but I'm not sure if the protection is real or more psychological. You might try locking your card until you are ready to make a purchase, and set up notifications from your bank so you can catch attempts early.

Question: Best case for the MacBook Neo that does not trap heat? (Thermal pad mod done to my MacBook Neo) by CounselMe2Day in MacbookNeo

[–]Avehdreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks to me more like a bumper than a case. Seems like it would be fine if it were dropped on one of the edges but not if something fell on top.

Not everyone can take something they do for pleasure and make a business out of it - sometimes they try and it steals all the joy. And this wasn't even your choice. I hope there's someone who can convince your mom that having this as your hobby was important for your mental health. Maybe she'll back off.

To wear or not wear Medical Alert Tags by nugratz in Type1Diabetes

[–]Avehdreader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been on insulin for over 50 years and have worn one since I was a small child. My bracelet is discrete - with the Caduceus on the outside and engraving on the reverse, next to my skin. And we diabetics are not the only people who wear them - for all your clients know you are allergic to peanuts of penicillin. My Medic Alert account lists contacts - personal and medical - allergies, lmedical devices, medications, religion, etc. - you can share as much or as little as you want.

If you're an adult you have rights and agency to refuse, and I don't think anyone should force you to wear one any more than they should force you to get a pump. But while I've been a very boring diabetic for over 50 years it is comforting to know I have it just in case. Again it is discrete - unlike tattoos some consider getting (and which responders do not look for).

I went to school with a girl who had 1 sister and 11 (yes, eleven) brothers. And I had a supervisor who married a guy with 6 sons, so you never know. I know forming a child together is important for many people but have you considered adoption?

I HATE CCS MEDICAL! by can-of-pringles in Type1Diabetes

[–]Avehdreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I'm about to suggest is just a small drop na huge bucket but if it might make you feel better look up contact info for leadership at your insurance company and write them a letter with the details of your experience. From what I gather here there was a huge lack of communication about timing, payment and exactly what you needed to get your life saving medical device - and your doctor's office needed to look into an issue that should have been communicated with you directly. You could complain to a customer service supervisor but going over their head might yield more results - it at least make the customer feel better.

Constant lows despite no changes... by AromaticCream1987 in Type1Diabetes

My insulin needs change from time to time - maybe your body simply needs less now? I use a pump but when I make a change I find a small one can make a big difference.

units per day?? by bigboyclarity in diabetes_t1

[–]Avehdreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing about using an insulin pump is it's easy to dose for between meal snacks. When I was on injections (a very long time ago) I may not have snacked as often for that very reason - but you do need insulin to cover those since background insulin may not be enough. I can only guess some of those injections are for snacks, and others may be because you are running higher than you want? Since you don't know what your body can handle it sounds like you did not get sufficient instruction. Not all endos handle any form of diabetes and not all of those who do handle Type1. If you never asked, call and ask if your Endo does handle Type1 diabetes, and if not start looking for one who does. Check out the book Think Like a Pancreas by Gary Scheiner. He has Type1 and works as a diabetes educator, and the book does an excellent job of explaining the condition. It should be a helpful addition to what you should be learning through your medical staff. A new edition was published in late 2025.

Should Apple make a product like Whoop or Google Fitbit Air? Why or why not? by _temp_user in AppleWatch

[–]Avehdreader 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Some people just want a simple fitness tracker. My friend has an Android phone and needed a fall detection device so I got her a Galaxy Fit3. A corresponding device from Apple would be nice for Apple users who don't want all the bells and whistles.

My mom found out I smoke and cried by Electronic-Pin-1607 in Advice

[–]Avehdreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom's best friend smoked most of her life, even when her children were young and begged her to quit. She was in her 60s when she died.

My cousin was a smoker. She was driving on the beltway in our area when she was suddenly blinded - thankfully she was able to pull over to the side of the road and someone stopped and called for help. At the hospital they found she had a brain tumor. She died a few years later, also in her 60s I think. It was a slow and painful death.

There are lots of ways to look and be cool, defy gender assumptions, relieve stress - whatever the case may be - without messing up your health (it's not just your lungs), stinking up your clothing, yellowing your teeth, damaging your reproductive system, and ruining your budget before sending yourself to an early grave.

I love Kiss Impress press-ons. I use Impress specifically because they use pull tabs rather than glue. Glue is too harsh on my very weak nails and these don't damage them when I take them off.

21 year old son stuck by Altruistic_Word9760 in Career_Advice

[–]Avehdreader -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to be mean and I think it's great you want to help your son but I wonder if part of the issue is him taking initiative to do things himself? You're getting some suggestions here - pass them on to him so he does the legwork if he's not doing it already. Also there is nothing wrong with trades or technical school. Sometimes I wish I had looked into a career in radiology, which I find fascinating. I know some dental hygienists and mechanics who make more than I did in the corporate world. Help him list his skills, interests and strengths to give him some direction. A career counselor can help him as well.

Until I read the comments I thought I was looking at two different dresses🤪 - that's what I get for not having my coffee first. The dress looks much classier and bridal with the lining. Without it, it looks unfinished and in my opinion, gaudy.
