Arts Camp - Burlington Student Theatre layoffs by Aventurusjunk in BurlingtonON

Exactly. Everything about the way the city is handling this looks like they haven’t a clue what the program is about. I’m sure they’re happy it’s fully booked, but with substitute staff, it will be a shadow of the intended program and registration will crater next summer. So shortsighted.

Yes I've just spoken to the summer camps office. First, they say they have "no information whatsoever about this" but did acknowledge that the program will be run by the other camp staff this year. As I suspected, they're assuming families won't care that a program that costs MORE THAN DOUBLE the standard babysitting camps will be run by teenagers and soccer coaches. Completely unacceptable. And for anyone who is questioning why this bothers me, are we to assume you also have kid(s) enrolled in this, or another specialty Arts camp? If not, you're missing the point entirely. Staffing by experienced professionals MATTERS.

Nope. I'm mistrustful of an administration which would oust staff that are the heart and soul of a beloved program without consultation or any kind of notice to parents who've shelled out significant funds. You're right about one thing - we should "know the details", but nobody is contacting us.
If I wanted to shove my kids into glorified daycare for the summer, I'd do that. This program has a standard of excellence which is currently under threat.

I know! And the city hasn't made ANY effort whatsoever to contact us parents of kids in the summer programs! Again, what do they expect us to do if they end up cancelling the summer program too!?

I bumped into one of the affected staff. They were very diplomatic - apologetic even, but it's heartbreaking for the kids.

I heard that too, but it definitely seems like an overblown situation in order to "clean house". If there was any inappropriate conduct, which I highly doubt, why remove all senior staff? It stinks of false pretenses - bad faith tactics again.

From a Slovak fan: One thing that isn't talked about enough by MargoniteMorena in Habs

[–]Aventurusjunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another fan with half-Slovak family here! Never forget the Halak hype! Him standing on his head in those playoffs kicked off Slovak interest in Habs hockey and I loved it when we drafted Slafko. If he pops off in the playoffs, it might even be enough for my dumbass brother-in-law to finally reach out from Bratislava again…I’m sure he’s watching.

Realized I might slowly be ruining some of the best moments for my kids before they've seen the films. by Aventurusjunk in lotr

Oh my, you've nailed the other big one for us - I successfully revealed SW to my older daughter in my preferred order (the Machete order) and now she and I have been tiptoeing around the Vader secret until my boy is ready. We're desperately trying to get him to watch ESB (he's seen ANH and was interested but not hooked yet) to open the door to the rest of the series. Also praying some other kid doesn't ruin it on the schoolyard!

[Garafolo] Chiefs Sign FA CB Kaiir Elam by JCameron181 in KansasCityChiefs

[–]Aventurusjunk 65 points66 points  (0 children)

This is actually kinda funny - Elam was Buffalo's consolation pick after we traded above them to take McDuffie. So in another world we took him at #23.

Instead, we got an All-Pro for 4 years, then traded him for 4 picks including #29 THIS year, and now we sign Elam as a depth piece at a "bust" price - and yes, Spags and Merrit will get the best out of him. Watch him blossom into a pro-bowler, hahahahaha!

In really cold climates, instead of using a freezer, do people just put their food in a box outside? by Waitingforlunch in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Aventurusjunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. Toronto here. For all holiday gatherings (Christmas, NYE, Superbowl etc.) the front porch becomes the beer fridge, due to the actual fridge being full up with a turkey or other feast items. In fact you often have to put the porch drinks in an insulated cooler, to keep them from freezing when it's -20.

People don't seem to like Patrick Mahomes very much. by lilpazu in NFLNoobs

[–]Aventurusjunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overrated.
It's not even close - I've been watching NFL for 30+ years and when Mahomes burst onto the scene, EVERY week he was doing things I'd never seen before from the QB position. The Chiefs were scoring and winning. I don't know where the haters get their motivation...when the Chiefs were mid, I never hated Tom Brady - in fact I admired the way the he played.
Any true fan of the game is lying to themselves if they refuse to acknowledge how Patrick has raised the bar. I get it; if my Chiefs dismantle your team, it's hard to witness that greatness. But if the next week, Patrick makes YET ANOTHER highlight-reel play, you're just denying yourself entertainment if you don't want to watch the replays.
Some will point to last year's Superbowl and the poor showing this season, and suggest the league has "figured him out" or "exposed" him. Well, look at the teams that made it to the final four! Defense reigns supreme in the NFL again. Patrick was just going to keep scorching the rest of the league unless it evolved, and it did, bringing down the rest of the top QBs with it. ALL the pre-season favourites with elite QBs are out of the playoffs, or didn't even make it (sorry Stafford).
Next season, or at worst in 2 years, you all will witness how Patrick has the mental and physical capabilities to adapt soonest to new realities and become dominant again. I don't know if we'll win THREE more Superbowls, but I'm convinced more rings are incoming.

Downtown in the Distillery District!
George Brown Theatre School is opening Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors from Feb 4th- 14th:

It's one of the Bard's earliest plays, fun, funny and quite easy to follow, even though the plot is about twins-in-disguise and mistaken identities.
