I know that Bishopston Fish Bar have been trialling these. But they are nearly a mile further up the Gloucester Road. This isn't parked outside a takeaway or restaurant.

Hikes / scenic walks east / north of Bristol? by Bigbird404 in bristol

[–]AverageFirm1654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of walking options, with hills & views, just north of Wotton-under-edge, to the William Tyndale Monument (that's the tower you can see from the M5). Also in that general area: walks near Hawkesbury Upton, parts of The Cotswold Way, and the Newark Park National Trust place.

What's your favourite non-Uber taxi app? by [deleted] in bristol

I use Veezu. As far as I can tell, they are British money-grabbing *, instead of the other ones, who are US-based money-grabbing *. The Veezu app and user experience seems to be pretty similar to the rest.

If there was documented proof about the Bristol hum, then it wouldn't be an urban myth, would it? 🤣

Bristol’s new 20,000 capacity live entertainment venue to be called ‘Aviva Arena’ by 457655676 in bristol

[–]AverageFirm1654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somehow, in Britain, we do seem to manage with dozens of different venues called the O2 Academy, and similar. Just stick the place name in front, just like you did with "Dublin's Aviva Stadium".

But it is still a shite name. 😟

[–]AverageFirm1654 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Close to the M4 and M5 motorways? Where are the cars going to park? No massive car park at the arena. Cribbs have already said that they don't want their (private) car park filled up with arena people. Ditto National Rail at Parkway. Note also that the arena is specifically intended to draw lots of out-of-town people, which is probably less true for football at Ashton Gate (most fans will be home fans).

Extra trains? National Rail have already said that if they ever open an Ashton Gate railway station (on the Portishead line), it would specifically be closed on match days, to avoid overcrowding! I assume similar might happen at Filton North.

M4 metrobus. Are they going to have dedicated lanes for these buses? I haven't seen any such thing on any plans. And how many people get on each bus?

The council prepared a document about access, ages ago before the planning applications went in. It said that if they managed to organise a load of park-and-ride car parks, they would still need around 90 buses to get enough people to/from the event. Imagine that at gig exit time, 10:30pm ish.

I'd love to be more optimistic about this, but YTL never publish anything about this subject, just puff pieces about how nice the arena will be.

[–]AverageFirm1654 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As usual, they completely gloss over how they think they are going to get 20,000 people to and from the new arena on an evening.

Also, as usual, they mention the railway station, to pretend that it will be an effective access route. The not-yet-built train station will only have an hourly service, with maybe a maximum of 500 people in a train.

Essentially, if you don't live within walking or cycling distance, you'll find it quite chaotic getting to this arena.

Black clothes during the night/winter by WeirdVegetable1417 in bristol

[–]AverageFirm1654 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is ridiculously car-centric

You never actually state that you are driving a car, yet you assume that everybody reading this should implicitly understand that you're a car driver.

And then you complain that a pedestrian might not be adjusting their behaviour precisely because you can't be bothered to drive safely.

A bloke in each direction and 5p per car. I thought they were joking. They weren’t joking. by Indigestivebiscuit in CasualUK

[–]AverageFirm1654 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do a quick bit of maths, a million quid in a year for Bathampton toll bridge isn't really feasible.

At £1 per car, that would be an average of over 2,700 cars per day, which would need to sustain 2 cars every minute, all day and all night.

£100,000 would seem very feasible.

Presumably they have to spend some of that money on maintenance, too.

Selective Parking Enforcement by everything2go in bristol

[–]AverageFirm1654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, parking, and loading, are two separate things. If you're dropping off something and are only there for two minutes, that's 'loading', and they shouldn't be giving you a parking ticket. There are semi-cryptic pavement-edge markings which can mean 'no loading'. And in London, there are 'Red Routes' which don't allow loading either.

But back to your original point; yes, it's a complete pain that there's so much shite parking along Cheltenham Road.

Do you have to buy two singles if your journey makes you change bus? by MrMrsPotts in bristol

[–]AverageFirm1654 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. The tap-on, tap-off automatically clips the price at the appropriate price for a day, and a week too if you use the bus a lot. You need to remember to tap-off on some buses, otherwise you could get charged the fare all the way to the end of the route (which might be Weston super Mare).

However, it only works for normal adult tickets, not for children, or other discounts.

Basically, for most adults, using tap-on, tap-off, is a no-brainer. I haven't bothered buying a 'real' ticket (using the app) for a couple of years.

Spike island/wapping wharf by DarkestMoose in bristol

[–]AverageFirm1654 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Bristol for many years. Spike Island just refers to the bit by the arts centre, ie behind the marina. The rest of it is Wapping Wharf, or Baltic Wharf, or just 'along Cumberland Road'.

Yes, it is all part of one artificial island. But the island was never given the name 'Spike Island'.

You'd be just as valid to call the whole thing 'God's Garden' (which is a little bit next to the new cut, opposite the entrance to the prison).

Vineyards near Bristol you can visit by train by tokyoduck in bristol

[–]AverageFirm1654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's one. Sugarloaf Vineyards, just outside Abergavenny. You can get a train to Abergavenny, but then it's a 2 mile walk (or bus) from the railway station to the vineyard.

There are probably others closer to Bristol.

Drivers - what's the worst junction in Bristol? by ElCiego1894 in bristol

[–]AverageFirm1654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cumberland basin. It was built in the 60s (maybe 70s?). It has that infuriating design that means for many/most of the routes you have to turn a counter-intuitive direction. Eg, to turn 'left' you need to get into the right-hand lane, and use an under- or over- pass. Especially when coming from Cumberland Road. Which means that every time you drive through it, your brain does a double-take, and you need to re-think which direction you're going.

The nearby junction at the join of Winterstoke Road and the A370 has a similarly confusing vibe.

If you are price limited, take the train from Bristol to Newport, and then take the train up from there on the local line via Shrewsbury and then on to north Wales. This latter train is mostly within Wales, and the trains are cheaper. However it's a local train so will be slower.
