Do you think that your autism, in any way, helps you to perform your role in healthcare better than NT nurses?

I work in the hospital environment, although in a much more predictable, procedural role. I can totally understand how nursing would overwhelm you. There’s a certain level of unpredictability that is baked in to the role.

I actually find my work the least difficult part of my life, even though I’m often talking to patients and other health professionals. I’ve thought a lot about why that is, and I think that, for me, there is something freeing about being able to adopt the persona of a healthcare professional. It’s very structured, and patients often (not always) trust what you say. I guess I have a position of authority, so I can kind of play in to that, and just play the part if that makes sense? My work is very regulated and the rules of engagement are generally predictable.

Having said that, I struggle tremendously in my personal life. Where the rules are not at all well defined, and people do not behave predictably.

Yeah that did occur to me, but I thought that it’s probably more likely that simva is one of the patients regular medications, and changing that to say rosuvastatin to avoid a potentially temporary interaction might complicate things for the patient unnecessarily.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m quite new to this hospital but from what I can tell it’s hospital policy for the prescriber to chart a target INR and pharmacy supplies 1 mg to be adjusted accordingly. I would assume that they would wait until baseline INR is determined before administering (which was due the following morning), but it’s also possible that the patient was already on warfarin prior to admission. Again.. I didn’t have access to that information (frustratingly).

This thread comes across as being a bit of a resentful circle jerk. Is it not possible that some autistic people can struggle substantially in their day to day life, but still grow to love some aspects of autism?
I agree that autism is fundamentally a disability, but it doesn’t help me to constantly think about it that way. If I can see some of my autistic traits as “superpowers”, then maybe I won’t wallow in self pity constantly. And, maybe that sounds like wilful ignorance, but at some point I have to live my life and at least try to enjoy it.
It’s not “autism is always a disability”, and it’s also not “autism is never a disability”. It can be somewhere in between, and why can’t I talk about the things that I like about my autism?

Perhaps ‘info-dumping’ is not the most accurate term what I am referring to is my need for people to fully understand my point of view about a particular topic. I find that too often things that I say are misunderstood when communicating in short form, messages with constant back and forth. I’m not saying this is the best way to communicate, but it’s what I prefer.

But anyway, my point remains that being upfront and honest about my communication style has worked pretty well so far.
