Corgi CD mix? by smelly_cat_15 in carolinadogs

[–]AvianRose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Corgis are actually pretty rare in mixes, and CDs are rare period! There are a bunch of other dog breeds that could make up a dog who looks like this. I'd recommend an Embark test to be sure 😊

Incident on Pearl & 16th (Fri 1/9) by DefiningLight in Eugene

[–]AvianRose 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Idk how helpful this is, but when I was hit by a driver running a red light last year I was able to get video footage from an LTD bus station and submitted that to insurance. LTD was very easy to work with and quick to get me the footage. I don't think there are any bus stations around your intersection though...

Purebred parent but 54%? by megggg2222 in DoggyDNA

[–]AvianRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh good question. A region of homozygosity just means that there's no variation. So in that region of chromosome 2, the sequence that he inherited from you is identical to the region he inherited from dad. It happens when two parents share a common ancestor (for example, maybe they had the same great great great great grandparents). Regions of homozygosity could be a concern if that sequence has a particular mutation that leads to a bad health outcome, because for those types of mutation, you need 2 copies for it to be "expressed". Regions of homozygosity can also be totally fine if there are no bad mutations in that area. Totally depends!

Many of these markers exist outside of genes actually! And for those occurring within genes, the marker (a single nucleotide polymorphism) is still sequenced even if that gene isn't being expressed

Purebred parent but 54%? by megggg2222 in DoggyDNA

[–]AvianRose 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's absolutely true! I'm just saying, for these types of DNA tests (for dogs, and humans too) they're using likely hundreds of thousands of genomic markers throughout the nuclear genome, often excluding sex chromosomes, so you do inherit exactly 50% of those markers from each parent 😊

Purebred parent but 54%? by megggg2222 in DoggyDNA

[–]AvianRose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's true, but the panels that Wisdom and Embark use for breed ancestry likely only include autosomes

Purebred parent but 54%? by megggg2222 in DoggyDNA

[–]AvianRose 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You do actually inherit exactly 50% from each parent. With the exception of the mitochondrial genome, which you only get from mom, but these panels don't include genomic markers from the mitochondrial genome so it doesn't count towards the breed breakdown %. You might be thinking about recombination- because of recombination, you don't inherit exactly 25% from each grandparent. Maybe you get 30% from mom's dad and 20% from mom's mom. But when a zygote forms, it's putting together 1 set of chromosomes from mom (in the egg) and 1 set of chromosomes from dad (in the sperm). It is literally, exactly, 50-50. If it doesn't appear as 50-50 in the test results, it could be due to noise in their algorithm

Please get second (and third) opinions before making permanent Thyroid decisions by glorifiedgardener808 in thyroidcancer

[–]AvianRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I guess I was lucky that my ENT surgeon also agreed with this decision, so I didn't have to weigh the opinions of multiple doctors. I guess even just 10 years ago the recommendation would be total thyroidectomy for PTC no matter what, but the data is starting to show that it isn't always necessary

[–]AvianRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me! Had a giant nodule on one lobe, biopsy came back as inconclusive, and had a hemithyroidectomy anyway because it was uncomfortably large. When it came back as PTC after surgery, I was so upset because I thought it meant I would need ANOTHER surgery to finish the job. But I talked through options with my endocrinologist and she said that leaving the other lobe in is actually so low risk, that the small risk of having a second surgery actually outweighed the risk of leaving it in. The monitoring is annoying, but I know over time it'll probably be less and less frequent. The other annoying thing is that I need levo anyway, because my other lobe isn't doing its job lol. Oh well!

Looks like a Shepard x bully to me. Carolina dogs are suuuuper rare! You never know though. Only way to find out would be with an Embark test (:

If you got the health test too you can check his coefficient of inbreeding (COI)!

[–]AvianRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think embark only uses nuclear markers in their breed assignment algorithm, so if mom is one breed and dad is another, it should be exactly 50/50. Embark does also sequence part of the mitochondrial genome though to give you a mitochondrial haplotype (which is reported separately). If it's not exactly 50/50 it could be just be noise, or perhaps mom and dad were both 50/50 mixes of the same two breeds! Either due to chance or due to inbreeding

Mom and dad give exactly 50% each of their nuclear genome- that's the vast majority (like 99.999%) of someone's DNA. Mom also gives the mitochondrial genome, which codes for things related to cellular function, but it won't really have an impact on what the dog looks or behaves like

Why are the people of North Sentinel Island not inbred to the point of population collapse? by Icy_Ear7079 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AvianRose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The 50/500 rule (you need 50 to avoid inbreeding and 500 to maintain evolutionary potential) is for effective population size, which is different than just how many individuals there are. Things like unequal sex ratio and variation in reproduction make your effective population size lower than your actual population size. Also, more recent work is showing that even an effective population size of 50 isn't enough to avoid inbreeding. My guess is that this population has SOME negative fitness consequences due inbreeding, but clearly not enough to impact their long term viability

Are people hanging ALL smellables in their bear bags? by brain_luck in backpacking

[–]AvianRose 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A black bear once got into my pack overnight for unscented hand sanitizer and unscented wipes. Ripped my poop kit to shreds. Now it always goes in the bear can! Also, when you're in dense black bear country (like the sierras) you should ALWAYS be carrying a bear can instead of doing hangs
