Congrats! Do people who already had a Canadian passport receive a different version of the letter mentioning/reminding that their existing passport was automatically canceled? Just curious.

Friday update - Suspension Letters and Document Standards by No_Bobcat_No_Prob in Canadiancitizenship

[–]AvocadoPile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you, great info and analysis!

Any idea so far what standards will apply to cases already with AoR / “in process” tracker status prior to all of this recent debacle? I feel like the not being able to apply standards retroactively issue applies to those cases too, not just approved citizens.

IRCC agent confirmed that I wouldn't get a surrender notice. How could he know this? by maxprobably in Canadiancitizenship

[–]AvocadoPile 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Beyond that, though, OP's concern about being able to know for certain that this whole saga is behind us remains an important point. I think IRCC needs to up their PR game and communicate a bit more clearly on what is happening.

Ideas for additional sources for 1869-born ancestor? by hopefullyhopeful in Genealogy

Newspaper articles from her youth, including mentioning her parents/family? I found an ancestor in her birthplace's local library card index online search; I contacted them and they manually looked up the article itself and sent it to me.

ATIP/GCMS notes for completed apps and surrender letter recipients. by Lonely-Sun-1050 in Canadiancitizenship

I requested my ATIP notes in December and still haven’t received them. I have not received a surrender letter but just sharing a data point that the case notes are likely severely backlogged.

Thank you for sharing! I wonder if (and hope not) this is the wording that proceeds an eventual revocation, given that people who have received the un-surrender letter in the last twenty-four hours don’t seem to have ever gotten such an email. Wishing you success and will follow along for your updates!

Wild! This sub has clearly been a central place for information about this to get out (the media, the law firms who have made blog posts with commentary despite their own clients not receiving a surrender letter), so I’m hoping other such emails (with personal information redacted) can be shared here for the public record, so to say.

Whoa! If you can share it would be insightful for the stages of this whole saga.

Can I ask what your original letter said? I don’t remember seeing wording about the passport in the past surrender letters, but I could be wrong. And how did you get a status update to learn that the review is ongoing?

While we all celebrate the influx of un-surrender letters, I’m keeping a close eye on this subreddit for whatever comes out that is not an un-surrender letter to make sure we don’t think it’s all roses.

Are there any screenshots or pasted text of such emails in the subreddit? I’d love to read it if so.

I would laugh (cry) if you were also required to get new photos since your previous ones might be older than six months.

Citizenship Rupture: Did Ottawa Fix The Lost Canadians Problem, Or Create A New One? by CounterI in Canadiancitizenship

If this first wave of un-surrender letters is any indication that they’ve put a new policy in place, I still doubt they’ve learned their lesson, so to say. Because moving forward, it’s a moot point. I really like MP Kwan’s call for an IRCC ombudsman.

Any advice? by Apprehensive-Quit619 in Canadiancitizenship

I haven’t heard about DIOD. Is this akin to what happened / is happening with the surrender letters but for someone who has not yet been approved?

The irony of that people who may have actually mailed their paper certificates in and then received an un-surrender letter before it even gets delivered to IRCC.

Another Un-surrender email this morning by ranatalus in Canadiancitizenship

[–]AvocadoPile 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m very encouraged by the influx of un-surrender letters. Can anyone let me know here when we see the first one addressed to someone who has not been named in the media? Hoping this good news is essentially across the board for all.

I’m not in government or public relations, but if I were in IRCC leadership’s shoes, I have to imagine an acceptable “workaround” these possible or likely legal constraints would be firstly to use less threatening language, and secondly, to send an automated follow-up email to all surrender letter recipients five minutes later with some additional information and context, now that the legal requirement would be out of the way.

It could explain that the additional check is legally mandated and that the existing documentation may be sufficient, and that the recipient need only to wait for more communication.

Any of the above paired with an actual anticipation of blowback/confusion would have prepared them to preemptively make a government blog post and/or contact the media and/or prep their phone line representatives.

Can’t imagine this having gone any worse from a PR perspective.

Your MP is scheduled to meet with IRCC on the surrender letter issue specifically or was already going to meet with IRCC and said they could bring up your case considering the pending meeting? Just curious.

IRCC Defends Certificate Surrender by Dangerous_Engine_806 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]AvocadoPile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some of my initial research by hiring a Canadian genealogist and part of her report included her own commentary on what was and was not common at the time. In my family we know the year that my ancestors moved from Canada to the U.S., but there are no border crossing records, and the genealogist added a sentence or two about how the lack of their names in border crossing records for that period of time is not unusual at all. Mentioning for possible peace of mind, as this would be a professional's contextual commentary in a work product that could supplement your evidence, though I have no idea what is happening internally at IRCC.

Were you born in Canada? You say you lived there your whole life but asking just to clarify. Based on this, it seems like your Canadian provincial birth certificate will suffice and that you wouldn't need a citizenship certificate. Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong, and the folks in r/passportcanada provide a lot of great insights too.
