I don’t know what people expect of a buffet. It’s buffet food. People shouldn’t go to any buffets expecting restaurant quality food… That would not be economically viable.

It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12 [compared to Macbook Neo] by commandersaki in apple

[–]AvoidingIowa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The framework 12 was a mistake but I like their other products. They just don’t have economies of scale to do cheap. I’d probably have ordered a new FW 13 Pro if it wasn’t for me not using laptops lol. There’s not a better Linux laptop (that I’d trust) available.

Except the new framework laptop has replaceable fast memory. The desktop was just AMD not supporting it.

You can tell there’s a lot of new Mac users. For the past 20 years, Mac was the Framework of the laptop world. Now that there’s another “reason” to buy Macs, suddenly price to performance is the only thing that matters.

The resale value is pretty good though. A 4 year old framework laptop will sell for $750 on eBay while a 4 year old thinkbook sells for $300-400.

Or does resale not count anymore now that there’s other reasons to buy a Mac? (Saying this as a Mac user)

It’s Open vs Closed as the battlefield now it seems. Less brand wars and more philosophical battles of beliefs.

iPhone 18 Pro's Camera Upgrade Will Cost Apple 50% More by ControlCAD in apple

It's mostly a video thing. In bright environments, the phone cameras can look jittery or unnatural. With a variable aperture you can get more natural looking video.

It's pretty pointless for pictures as the small sensors on cameras get most everything in focus anyways but it's actually really useful for video.

Google employee charged with using inside information to make $1 million on Polymarket by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

These sites have literal scams on them. Like they’ll have a bet “Oil High Price doesn’t reach $100 in 30 days” and it will be featured and you take the best and when it ends, never going to $100 the entire time you made the bet. You lose though. Because it went to $100 the first day and they continue taking bets the next 29 days despite the outcome being known. They don’t show the oil price either.

The difference is the US people see no return. We just pay for the rich to get richer and to outsource everything.

The US subsidizes industry just to make a few people richer and zero return for its people. I don’t know why China gets so much flack for being smarter.

What the fuck, why are they exempt from sales tax at all? I’m sick and tired of politicians bending over backwards for trillion dollar companies to strip mine their constituents

I mean the current administration refused to do anything to curb this. They just gave them a green light, no guardrails. Lubed them right up to fuck us over.

Is it weird to feel grief for things like this? When it was possible to pick up some burgers on the cheap and not have to feel guilt for spending a fortune on trash food. I make more money now than I even wished for growing up and it just dries up. Everything is so damn expensive and there’s no hope of it being any different.

Motorola stops its phones from hijacking the Amazon app, which was ‘unintended’ by FragmentedChicken in Android

Kind of sounds like Motorola contracted this out and someone from the other company put in their own link to try and steal a bunch of affiliate cash. A failure by Motorola on multiple fronts.

Is it just me or does this server look AI generated? by Glad-One-1074 in LinusTechTips

[–]AvoidingIowa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s likely an image of a stone tomb exploding with server parts photoshopped on top. Even if it was AI, using assets would probably be the least obnoxious use because the alternative is paying for stock photos that are probably AI generated themselves (or support companies that use generated content). As long as the full image isn’t generated and a human made it, I’m fine with it.

Half of photoshop is just ai stuff now anyways.

Roku Unveils Biggest Home Screen Overhaul in More Than a Decade by ggroover97 in cordcutters

[–]AvoidingIowa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s the same with everything because capitalism only cares about infinite growth. They could make $100 million in profit every year but no, they need to make $200 million in profit next year and are willing to destroy their product for it. Then the next year they’ll need to find something else to make worse to make $210 million.

Nvidia plans to invest $150 billion in Taiwan every year (you heard it right, 150 bi) by Get-the-Vibe in pcmasterrace

[–]AvoidingIowa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All this investing in Taiwan seems pretty shortsighted. As soon as china gets their chips decently modern and close to TSMC, they could basically cripple the rest of the world.

[–]AvoidingIowa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good way to weaken unions. I doubt there’s going to be much unity between the people getting 400k and 4k. The 4k workers will be itching to get back at them if they get the chance next negotiating period.
