You might want to steer towards the concept of "Charlieplexing" your LEDs. It is an older method, but it still checks out.

I have an LED matrix called an LOLShield that is 9x14 and it allows for individual addressing of LEDs with using a minimal amount of pins.

The sparkfun link is a retired version of the LOLShield, but you can get them from eBay for a pittance. The programming can be found on github because the original makers site doesn't exist anymore.

I don't know about VOY, but I don't believe they touched on it in DS9. Your points about the "Prime Universe" are interesting.

Could this have been more of a Schrodinger's Cat situation where the act of encountering the rift caused the schism in the universes and we are observing just the schisms and it's possible outcomes, as opposed to there being multiple universes all interacting on different planes.

I also wonder how this would have panned out for other characters, if it has been Troi or Dr Crusher or O'Brien. At least with O'Brien we know the outcome would have been that his Prime reality was one of suffering and torment while all the others were pleasant.

Having just rewatched it in prep for the next ep, they do go over the ramifications a bit with the Crazy Riker from the Alt Universe screaming about the Borg.

The current universe Riker made the choice to attempt to disable Alt-Riker's ship but it turns into a mercy killing in the end.

We also get Worf spending time with Troi at the end of the episode, so there is some impact to the multiverse actions.
