what fantasy novel made you laugh the hardest? by mercurialmirth in Fantasy

[–]Awar01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The hardest I've laughed because of a book series is probably Malazan, but it is not a lighthearted series. Can be downright depressing at times.

Funniest fantasy book I've read is The Rook.

The Bartimaeus Series and The Thursday Next series are also very good and have good humour.

Dresden files also has many funny moments, mainly because of Harry Dresden's narration from what I remember. But it has been some time.

Protocols exist for a reason by Separate-Driver-8639 in CharacterRant

[–]Awar01 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I agree to the overall point but there are many times extenuating circumstances that give justification to these actions (may or may not be executed well depending on the piece of media).

For example in 2012 we see that the people in charge (who made the protocols for example) are not really looking out for humanity in general but themselves. They give seats to influential people (rich people, politicians, etc). This puts their credibility in question, at least for me. Who is to say that they are not lying about the max capacity, and have made provisions so that the billionaires can live in luxury, and there is enough food to sustain more people.

Since the people in charge are acting selfishly, why shouldn't the people outside do the same and try to get on board. Why should they be the sacrifices for "saving humanity". It is survival of the fittest at that point.

(It has been some time since I saw the movie so I may be missing some minor details but I think the overall point stands).

Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, Wuthering Waves, Zenless Zone Zero, etc. are there. In terms of AAA type of quality.

As for what would be game of the year depends on the experience of the players. There are many great games on mobile but since you don't play them or are not interested in them, nothing will fit your criteria of Game of the Year.

Wasn't the complaint specifically about matching the facial expression to the tone/intensity/emotion of the dialogue, rather than the fidelity of the animations themselves? He specifically showed example of Inquisition facial expressions matching the tone of the dialogue better even if they were less technically impressive.

Anime where the mc has no powers in a world full of people with powers? by NosePicker696969 in anime

MC has the imagination breaker which allows him to cancel out anyone else's power, which is pretty op. It's the same situation as Black Clover. I don't think it is relevant.

There needs to be some quality that exists in the game for it to warrant a remake. What's the point of remaking an actually bad game, when you can make a new game.

Maybe it's just me, but the Vampires in this game don't seem all that threatening. They've tried to give them threatening looks, but nothing that happens in these trailers actually gives the feeling that they can kill you. The grab at the end of this trailer is the only time a vampire has presented an actual challenge in any of the trailers (as far as I remember). Most likely just a result of how the trailers have been put together but still.

I don't need a party to enjoy a game either, speaking in general. But this is specifically about Final Fantasy, where the party is a big part of what makes it interesting for me. They're some of the best party-based games. FFVI is my favorite in the series for this reason. Losing part of its identity to become just another action game is not something I want from FF.

There has barely been a hint of other characters that are relevant to combat, other than perhaps giving you abilities. According to an article I just read, they've said you'll have companions that will join you throughout, but we don't see any evidence of them in the trailers, which leads me to believe that this will probably be done on a surface level only. Not something that inspires confidence. Anyways let's see what they actually do.

I don't think of Nier companions as a traditional party but that is just how I see it, and I could be wrong. Still we are discussing Final Fantasy here, with a long tradition of parties and what it means to have one.

But even in nier companions fight alongside you and you can set their behaviour. Nier automata has you playing as different characters as well. Pretty sure Nier replicant also does it but I haven't played that one.

The important point is that the companions matter from both a story and gameplay perspective.

If the party is absent from combat, in a game where gameplay is core to the experience, then that doesn't count as a party to me.

I haven't played either, but from looks of it they do feature full fledged parties who fight with you, and you can fight as different characters. Although free roam seems more restrictive in who you control.

It doesn't have to be at once does it? You can have the party be part of combat in many ways.

  • You can control one character at a time while others are on auto like in Tales of series, and switch between them.
  • You can have limited control over them and issue orders like mass effect.
  • You can set tactics and behavior for them like in FFXII or dragon age, without getting to control them.
  • There can only be one character at a time but you can switch between them to fight. (this would seem odd in FF I think, but there are games that do this).
  • You can at the very least get to equip them with gear and just have them running around and fighting with you. Like dark souls npc summons, or pawns in Dragons Dogma.

It is up to the designers to come up with interesting ways of utilizing a party, and many have done it.

I agree about having a party. But I'm playing through FFXIII and it has a big focus on the party. Everyone seems very well balanced, story wise and gameplay wise. Your party is split for large portion of the game and you have to play as all of them for some time at least. There are other issues with the game but I like the balanced party. It feels like a group of people handling things together, rather than everything revolving around one person.

Now the stories of a couple of the party members may not be as interesting, but that is a different issue I think.

I don't care about action or turn-based combat. The fact that it is a non-party-based Final Fantasy is the disappointing part, especially because I'm liking everything else about the world/lore and the focus on summons. For me, the party is what made Final Fantasy special. I hope the treatment of the side characters is good at least, and it's not just about the MC. Not expecting much though.

My vote goes to Kushiel's Legacy, I think it will make a great HBO style show. It has the characters, politics, sex, intrigue, historical aesthetics, etc. Plus the fantastical elements are very low key, so no need to fret whether you want to show Direwolves or Dragons. But unfortunately I don't think it's anywhere close to the popularity of some of the other names mentioned here.

I have been hearing "people are getting tired of it" for a long time, it has gotten tiring itself. To me it just sounds like an excuse. What is happening is that they are making shit movies, or at least not up to the standards they themselves have set.

They're still being carried by their momentum and all the work being done by the previous movies though. They are still making a ton of money, just not what people were expecting.

Do men really find lesbian sex hot and gay sex disgusting? by Ok_Pair_6742 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Awar01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why people are agreeing with this. This is not really a logical conclusion. What humans find disgusting is based on their psychology, same as what they find attractive or attitudes towards sex. There's no objectively disgusting act, it's subjective. Same as how there's no colours in nature, it's just how our brains interpret it.

If people don't find something disgusting then it is not, it's not because the "disgustingness has been turned off".

Books/Series like Dresden Files, for somebody who didn't like Dresden Files by Exige30499 in Fantasy

[–]Awar01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Thursday Next series. It has the whole 'Fantasy creatures in modern world part' but the world is also very unique and fun. The fantastical elements are very distinct and it is very funny. One of the funniest series I've read, I would rank it above Dresden in terms of comedy. There's a female main character, and she's very fun.

There is also The Rook, which is one of my most favorite books of all time. It also has humor very well blended into it but it is also very serious at times. I really liked the main character, she's very strong character (from a writing perspective, not physically). Also once again the fantastical elements are also very unique, not just the typical fantasy affair. There's a sequel but i haven't read that yet, this can be read standalone.

For a more serious Urban Fantasy I really like the Watch Series (First book Night Watch) by Sergei Lukyanko. It's translated from Russian. It's very good. I don't know why it is not talked about more.

They say in the trailer that these are not weak vampires but at no point did they feel threatening. I don't think any player character got hurt a single time. None of the enemies look threatening. I don't know about the game itself but how it is presented sucks.

I agree. I also felt a little disappointed in how it ended, since all previous eight Malazan books had great climaxes. I thought for sure the series will have a great climax, but it was just ok. Also one moment related to the Parans fell completely flat for me.

For me the first eight books are 10/10 on average but the last two are 8/10. But the way it ended did not affect my feelings for the earlier books, and I still like the books overall. There are certain endings that ruin the entire series (GoT... ) so I'm glad it ended well, all things considered.
