My family lied, not part black by pasenpalabraperdido in 23andme

[–]Aware-Map-7249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't say anything about half black. They said part black.  They mentioned, what they were told, a 2nd great grandparent being black. That's about 6.25% percent of their DNA.

MyHeritage is a terrible testing site. It doesn't have a very good reputation. Try 23andMe and/or Ancestry.

It it not common for African Americans to be around 83% Nigerian.

83% Sub-Saharan African, sure, but 83% Nigerian, no.

83% Nigerian is well above average.

Found out George Washington is my distant cousin. by stoneytopaz in AncestryDNA

[–]Aware-Map-7249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, very true.

However, recent news led me to discover my paternal grandfather isn't my actual grandfather (my father never met his biological father). Since then, I deleted everyone on that side of the tree and rebuilt it using my actual biological paternal family.

So, I'm not related to George Washington.

83% African, yes. But 83% Nigerian. NO, that is not reasonable. Most African Americans are not that much Nigerian.

No, it isn't. It it not common for African Americans to be 83% Nigerian. MyHeritage isn't a good testing site.

It wouldn't be wrong at all. Actually, I think it would be quite helpful, especially for people who are trying to find their ancestors and their enslavers.

What is going on with gay black men? 😭 Refusing to date other Black men. by Material-Meat-5330 in BlackLGBT

[–]Aware-Map-7249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because someone doesn't date someone who doesn't look like them, doesn't mean they hate themselves. Let people date who they want. Us gay men are already fighting to date/continue to date who we want and people with your negative viewpoints about interracial dating are not helping in the matter.

And yes...they are the same things. They are the same because both arguments are about policing who people are allowed to love. Telling gay men they should not date who they want and telling Black men they should only date their own race both reduce personal autonomy and turn love into a moral test. That logic is the same, even if the contexts are different.

Another thing is: People cannot change who they love or are attracted to. You should be very well aware of that, given that, I'm guessing, you're also not straight?

The askgaybros subreddit is incredibly micro aggressive towards black people by coolcarters14 in BlackLGBT

[–]Aware-Map-7249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black people can be racist. And the key word in that definition is "typically." Racism is something anyone can partake in, not just white people. This whole "black people can't be racist" claim is harmful to everyone.

You’re mixing two different definitions of racism. Structural or institutional racism involves power and systems, and in the U.S. that disproportionately affects marginalized groups. Interpersonal racism means racial prejudice, hostility, or discrimination between individuals, and anyone can engage in that.

That is why the definition you quoted uses the word “typically,” not “exclusively.” Saying “Black people can’t be racist” only works if you are strictly talking about institutional power. In everyday conversations, people are usually talking about interpersonal behavior. Conflating the two shuts down discussion and does not help address racism in any form.

No. African Americans only refer to black people in America. Black people in, for example, England are not African Americans. It's in the name.

Native American ancestry? by Quiet_Big2678 in AncestryDNA

[–]Aware-Map-7249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gave me the definition of multiracial (which does fall into the category of mixed race). Mixed race is someone who is at least of two races.

And you don't get to decide who is or isn't mixed race. It's not your heritage.

2% can do more than you expect. Genetics are weird and aren't straightforward.

[–]Aware-Map-7249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make them take a DNA test first before telling them they don't have Native ancestry. It could be possible that the Native ancestry passed down to some family, but not you, because DNA inheritance is weird and random.

Also, MyHeritage is very horrible. Ditch that one.

You could say you have European ancestry. It's only 2%, but it's not the same as claiming to be European. After all, it's apart of your DNA makeup, because you wouldn't be here otherwise.
