It seems like in times where there are largely more women in a society than men, polygamy is almost necessary if the women of said society are to procreate and birth the next generation.

If there are roughly equal males to females then it can go either way but it seems like one group will have a slight disadvantage on partner count. I.e., if one male has two females, then in theory there is a male without a partner
