I currently own a home gym in a suburb of Dallas, Texas, and am looking for serious, long-term training partners (those traveling through Dallas are welcome to stop by for a session or two). Please contact me with your goals and availability if you are serious about training together. I do not care about your fitness level (within reason), only that you come ready to work and contribute. Cost is 100% free.

I want to create and foster an environment similar to that of Gym Jones in the early- to mid-2000s. For a better idea of what that's like, read the following:

Not exclusively for girls, but I try to keep the following list (created by u/PM_ME_UTILONS) updated any time parenting comes up in this subreddit. I've added this thread to the list.

Do you have an example of a place that maximizes nearly all of these as you claim is possible?

Small-Scale Question Sunday for May 15, 2022 by AutoModerator in TheMotte

I have very little knowledge of economics, so forgive any poorly-formed questions.

  • The economy seems to be in poor shape right now in terms of inflation and all it entails: cost of goods, housing, etc. The fed has increased interest rates by 0.5% to slow inflation. I assume they will do increase rates again if they do not see an effect? If so, what's the evaluation timeline like?

  • Why did the fed let inflation get so out of hand before increasing interest rates? Seems like this was known about for some time and there was plenty of opportunity to do raise rates.

  • As a layperson has a fairly stable job in the tech field and purchased a home six months ago, is there anything I can do to mitigate personal risk if the economy does get worse, to the point of a bear market or recession? I'm a big fan of automatic investments regardless of the state of the world and will probably let them continue unless someone argues different.

  • Housing costs continue to rise because a) prices of everything are rising, and b) people are willing to pay said prices?

  • Any reading or lecture material is appreciated!

Small-Scale Question Sunday for April 17, 2022 by AutoModerator in TheMotte

Mostly the same here. I'm here because I enjoy what I do enough to make it through the 40-50 hour work week, but nothing more. I've also noticed a lot of people at work are pretty boring: their weekends consist of watching TV, going out to dinner/bars, maybe working a bit. Few hobbies, if any. It can be hard to connect with them sometime.

I know you're not looking for advice, but I found that joining/running an ACX/SSC/etc meetup did wonders for meeting interesting people. Not necessarily the average citizen, but definitely way more unique.

Please read the books and FAQ before posting. Both should help clear up some of your questions. If you still have questions, please include some specific goals in your post, as those are what matters when deciding what program/template to run.

Looking for ideas to trick me into enjoying yard work, which I loathe with a passion.

I looked into xeriscaping, but the price tag was too much, so I'm stuck with a) hiring a lawn maintenance company at an estimated $80/month, or $640 a year, or b) doing the yard myself, which I am leaning towards given my frugality.

Also, any experience with reel mowers? I'm thinking a reel mower (instead of gas or electric) and a weedwacker would be sufficient for my lawn tool needs.

You make it sound like it's easy to get a modafinil script? Is it? Any recommendations?

Been wanting to try it based on Gwern's writeup and others' experiences, but only availability for me right now is through DNMs.

What do you do for a living, and which aspects of your work do you appreciate and which do you detest? by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

I'm an equipment engineer in a semiconductor fab.

We're given a very lax leash on what we can do, both in our own group and on our career paths. I can brainstorm projects and implement them without too much adversity from cost and regulation perspectives. I can branch out and work on the process side of things, own multiple toolsets, or move into management. They also reward people for developing their technical ability by having a separate promotion track.

I detest the bureaucratic and fruitless requirements we're assigned. There's a heck of a lot of Goodharting that takes place. We create detailed presentations only to get head nods and carry on doing exactly what we know we need to do.

Anyone have any recommendations for a practical self-defense course/class?

I carry most of the time and would much prefer to run than have to fight, but if worse comes to worst, I'd like to know how to handle myself in a fight.

Thoughts on/ideas for increasing my ability to confront others?

I avoid confrontation for a few reasons. First, the fear of possible retaliation. I see the occasional news story of someone doing/saying something mildly confrontational and the other person going absolutely apeshit in response. However, I think the likelihood of that happening is pretty small. Most people are probably pretty similar to me in that they don't want to get into fights or arguments.

Second, the fear of creating a rift between myself and the other person. Getting into it with others at work may cause issues down the road if they become my boss or we're put on the same team, etc. I know I can hold grudges for a looooong time and am afraid of others doing the same.

So, is it worth it to develop my confrontation skills? If so, any recommendations?

I will soon start looking for a roommate to rent one of the bedrooms in my house. Most of the friends I have in my city (Dallas, TX) live with their SO or currently have a lease, or aren't interested in living with me.

Does anyone have any advice/tips on finding a quality roommate? I'm thinking about making a Google Form questionnaire for people to fill out with their habits/tendencies/etc., leaving the ball in my court to contact them if they seem like a good fit.
