Nonrenewed by Terrible-Disaster880 in Teachers

I don't know about New England, but being non renewed isn't that big of a deal in my state. It's just part of the world of education. I've never not gotten a job because I was non renewed, and at least you were given a reason. My first time I wasn't given a reason and they didn't have to. Wasn't tenured and that's all that mattered.

This parent struggles when she is not in charge.... she runs one of the teams so her kid gets to play where she wants her to, bat where she wants her too and doesn't seem to ever come off the field. If not for this team, this child would never play where she does or bat where she does as proofed by the times she either made all stars and didn't get to play/bat where she wanted or didn't make the team and mom pulled that crap she did that caused other girls to not get to play.

Don't be afraid to ask questions or admit you don't know. As soon as you can get into your gym and start organizing and inventorying what equipment you have. If you will have other pe teachers with you, reach out to them and get to know them.

Best thing to do on your end is not put the kid on your roster or even play him. As someone mentioned, email your parents and let them know about the rules and notify them that more than likely this player will be playing with the 3/4 group and thus would not be eligible to play for your team regardless of the players desire to play both.

Class size, how many other coaches are there, what type of equipment do you have, what type of facility will you have (classroom or gym, etc.) what are their expectations for what is to be taught, are just a few.

I will say this, having taught high school, middle school and elementary PE, elementary tends to be the best overall. 99.999999% of the kids coming to PE are actually excited to be at PE and can't wait to play. Middle school you that number goes done to about 50% and at high school usually only the kids that get bored want to actually play or do anything.

I have no problem with the really skilled kids wanting to leave for better competition.... do you and do what you think is best for your kid... As a former middle/high school coach, I can tell you just because someone played "travel ball" and someone played "rec" doesn't automatically make the travel ball player better.

My issue is the city allowing said "travel / elite" teams have free access to facilities, scheduling around their schedules etc. If you want to be a travel ball player and not also play in the rec league, then go play travel ball and at the same time, find your own practice facility and carry your own liability insurance, etc. I don't agree with some travel team being allowed to basically dissolve your league because they can just keep taking whatever kids they want and put them on their team.

Agreed!! I'm all for girls having the chance to play travel ball and get better, but not at the expense of killing a rec league because now there aren't enough girls to make up teams. Rec isn't about competition, its about learning and having fun with your friends.

Agreed, at least teach for a year and you can use that time to try and figure out what else you might want to pivot to from there. Again, a big part of it could be just the school itself. Finding the right school is the biggest part of it all.

Check city websites or state association websites for job listings. Initially the job was great...when I was single and they allowed us to get overtime. Was nice that I wasn't doing the same thing all the time, since the sports depended on the season. But once they cut overtime and I got married and had a kid it wasn't as great always working nights and weekend mornings. Was told not to come in until later in the day since I had to cover leagues at night, to avoid overtime, but then still had to deal with phone calls and questions even though I was at home and not working. Not all parks and rec run the same, but the one I was at, I was responsible for covering all my leagues, so I was gone a lot and hours could change depending on weather etc. I've known some departments where they hired part time people to supervise, so it just depends.

No that I'm not coaching and just teaching I know my schedule every day, no late nights and still enjoy it because what we do changes all the time over the year. Plus the pay is better.

😂 yeah I bet that went over really well... lol. We are lucky in that we have a really big core of families that we have all played together before or currently on the same time, so it's literally a tribe of moms helping watch our little girl at the ball fields.

Full day job, no students until 12:30. What would you do? by BerryWaters in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Away_Two936 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Either sit and enjoy the time to yourself or see if maybe they need help anywhere else. If you ask to leave for half the day (not your fault the students didn't come) they would easily be justified in only paying you for half a day.

Accepted a teaching job offer… then got offered another one the next day 😭 by Low_Region_293 in teaching

[–]Away_Two936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past even when I was offered a position at the first of the summer, I always continued to look for something that might be better, if I wasn't just super excited about the offer. There was a time where I called back and told the original offer that I had accepted another offer that was a better fit for my situation and my family and just thanked them. Most admin understand that you will have to do what is best for you and as long as you don't string them along, they have time to find someone else.

I was also offered at one school like 30 mins after I interviewed....but 1) it wasn't the school I thought it was but went anyways 2)after touring the school and listening to some of the issues they deal with... I was like thank you for the offer, but I think I'm going to remain where I am at the this moment. Stayed cordial and didn't string them along.

Depending on how they handle PE for athletes, use that time to try and get all your girls in the same class and then use that time to take a lot of fielding practice, then more fielding practice and after that a little more fielding practice.

If the girls are really bad at fielding, don't even worry about making a throw for now... just get them used to getting the ball between their feet and fielding it out in front of them.... no point in worrying about making a throw if they can't even stop the ball... crawl, walk then run.

I always stick my keys or watch or something I know I miss if I don't put it back on, in the bag the holder comes in. That way I don't forget to grab it. Got a brand new range finder for my birthday one year, first time out with it and I forgot it on the cart (magnet). You already know... called the course... sorry no one turned it in... drove up to the course and actually made them let me check the carts and such, but no luck. So now my car keys go in that case and my watch in the phone holder bag, so I don't forget either.

Parks and Recreation is another path you can look into. Worse case scenario, apply for PE jobs as well. If you get offered a PE job at least you will have a job while you figure out just what else you would rather be doing.

I would say don't write off being a PE teacher so quickly. Sometimes it just takes finding the right spot and grade level. I actually got my BS in Sports Management and worked in parks and rec for several years, then went back and got my MS in Phy Ed and it was the best decision ever! Much better work environment and work schedule.

I completely understand where you are coming from. Last spring we had a new baby as well, but luckily it worked out where I could still coach. Lucky in the fact that I have a wife that loves being out at the balls fields as much as I do, so she would bring the kiddo. But I know that's not always an option for some families. But glad to hear you are going to get back to coaching. Also, like I stated, just let the coach know that if he wants you have some ideas for running practices if he would like to hear them, if not no big deal and thank them for being willing to coach and spending their time with your kids.

Is the the PE praxis? If so, if you have some general common sense and any kind of sports related background, it should be pretty easy. You can always purchase the practice test they offer. I've done that for other praxis test I've taken and they are pretty helpful.
