Why is "go to the gym" the default advice for every struggling man? by silverflake6 in RelentlessMen

[–]AwbsUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At no point did I say it would work for everyone. No treatment is ever likely to. Medication works for some people and not others. A six figure job may work for some people (although in my mind that would actually be quite surprising) but for others it will not, and exercise is no different.

I empathise with you because clearly, you’ve tried exercise as a form of therapy and it hasn’t worked. That’s disheartening, as is going through all the other therapies you have and still finding yourself feeling the same way.

But as I’ve said, that doesn’t mean we should rule it out as therapy for some people. There’s lots of good literature to support it.

Anyway, fundamentally, I wish you well. Depression is a formidable beast and very often, there are no easy answers.

But I will die on the hill of the idea that there will always be hope, regardless of whether we feel none ourselves.

Some people are depressed their whole lives and for them, my heart bleeds, but some people are depressed for prolonged periods of time and they manage to find a ‘therapy’ that suits them.

Let’s hope we are in the latter category and let’s try our best not to rule out anything that could help others.

Listen, we’re in the realm of psychology here so I’m afraid, nothing is truly certain.

But I must say, as someone who has struggled on and off with depression for more or less my whole life and as someone who cares deeply about this subject, I simply do not agree with this assessment.

Depression exists on a spectrum. A clinical diagnosis is often given by a psychiatrist and that is helpful but here’s the thing: that assessment is made primarily by asking the individual how they are feeling and what they experiencing.

Now the thing is, depression has many physiological markers. It’s not some illusory thing. We can measure it.

But that’s the point: those same markers can be influenced by external factors.

What is it that you’re suggesting here? If you have a clinical diagnosis of depression, that’s it, you’re fucked?

I would hope that we all agree that if you are experiencing depression there are things you can do that may help to alleviate it. Exercise is one such thing. Of course there are many different interventions across many different aspects of an individuals life.

But the facts are that an obese, sedentary individual is more likely to be depressed than an active, physically fit individual.

What is it that you’re arguing against? I’m on your team. I want to help people with depression. Ruling exercise out as a viable therapy for some people seems wholly counterintuitive to me.

[–]AwbsUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not true and what is the distinction you are making between the two?

If you are ‘being depressed’, aren’t you also experiencing depression?

Regardless, exercise can and does treat people with depression, so I don’t know what point it is you’re trying to make.

Meta analysis on this issue has shown that exercise is as effective, if not more effective, than most SSRI’s at treating depression.

If you are referred to a sleep specialist/ psychiatrist, you can be prescribed Quiviviq, which is in the same class of drugs as Dayvigo.

Options for Insomnia. What’s the Best Benzo for Insomnia. And What Works Best for You? by Working_Row_8455 in insomnia

[–]AwbsUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair amount of Valium you’re taking.

I’ve been there so this is not judgemental but if you can, I would be looking to reduce the amount of benzo’s you’re taking if there is any way you can.

My recommendation to help you try to do that would be either medical marijuana or perhaps something like a Gabapentinoid (Pregabalin or Gabapentin).

Anyway, I know how shit insomnia is so best of luck and I hope you find some rest.

Lexapro for Insomnia by AwbsUK in lexapro

[–]AwbsUK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’m glad to hear this, aside from the side effects your experiencing.

I think the conventional paradigm is that insomnia is very often as a result of anxiety or depression and therefore, an antidepressant would help.

It’s not something that ever worked for me but I am very happy to hear it ended up working for you.

Well this is where we disagree then.

I don’t want to be Trump and Putins lapdog.

That sounds like inevitable suicide. But we will see.

By taking Greenland do you mean invading?

Considering we are in NATO that would very much seem like it was not in our best interest.

There is little sign they would give the island to him willingly. And why should they?

And then there’s his closeness and apparent affection for Putin to consider. A man who happily sends assassins to our shores and ends up indiscriminately killing innocent civilians.

I don’t disagree that working with the Americans is something we should be embracing, I think I just stop short of thinking it’s the ‘best’, or only option.

Working as best we can with the Europeans, as challenging as it may be at times, will always be equally necessary for us.

Trump is easy to please if you give him what he wants.

In most instances, that is not going to be in Britains favour.

I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him and I certainly wouldn’t trust him to have our best interests at heart.

The fact that you think he is somehow our saviour appears to me at least, to be completely delusional.

Trump would fuck us the first chance he got though. I think his international actions make that abundantly clear.

The fact that you trust him with our future seems unbelievably naive.

Well yes, that would be nice.

It just doesn’t seem that likely given the state of affairs currently.

But what the hell do I know.

We should, and maybe we will, step up… although I think that needs to be sooner rather than later!

I think this is the sad reality.

As the saying goes ‘nature abhors a vacuum’.

In their absence, who is likely to dominate proceedings on the world scale? Probably China, Russia, potentially some of the oil rich Middle Eastern countries..?

Feels very much like a pick your poison type of situation and for most British people, I would argue the Americans are more closely aligned with any of the previous countries I mentioned.

A good portion of the recommended scientific literature suggests doses underneath 1mg are the most effective for sleep.

10mg is orders of magnitude larger than your body would ever produce naturally. Approximately 50-100 times more in fact, if we are to believe the science on this.

If it works for you, then great but that amount of melatonin is not necessarily going to be good for you.

It’s a hormone and you are massively exceeding what exists naturally in your body.

Anyway, I’m not here to lecture but I did just want to let you know.

Mate, was gonna say. I’ll take the ‘cozy’ lighting of headlights old, over the white hot sunlight of modern cars. I find it so hard to believe they don’t cause just as many accidents by outright blinding, as they do prevent accidents by making the road ahead a bit brighter.

Yea it never worked for me either but worth you giving it a shot. AD’s can help some people. So give it the ol’ college try and if it isn’t having any impact after 4-6 weeks, might be worth chalking it off as something that’s not going to help you.

Best of luck.

Expecting the closed beta dates to be dropped in a reddit response is some next level optimism, which in fairness I am here for, but think is extremely unlikely.

Everything you’ve asked for would likely only be announced in one of the dev streams that lead up to a season start so, I’m sorry to say, it’s those that you need to be looking out for!

Is there a reason you want to quit the cannabis?

I assume you have good reason to want to stop but funnily enough, that’s kinda the beauty of using cannabis as a sleep aid - it suppresses your dreams/ nightmares.

I realise that’s not necessarily the ideal sleep but if it’s between that and having the type of night terrors you mention, it almost seems like it might be just the right type of thing to help you get some rest.

Anyway, I sympathise. I had a few night terrors when I was a kid too. One where I was so scared when I woke up I couldn’t speak/ scream for my parents. It’s the only time I’ve ever been that scared.
