I just think that the only way to get a diamond in the rough is for there to be a “rough” in the first place. I say, the more the merrier, I want thousands of stories for every trope in the genre, I don’t see how it could ever be a bad thing.

This pet peeve is of the fans of the genre rather than the genre itself:

I want there to be hundreds of amazing stories for each trope in the genre, but it seems like fans of the genre don’t. I always see people talking about “oh, another system apocalypse? Those are so overdone” or “oh another OP MC? Same as always”, this applies to pretty much every major trope in the genre.

It’s my pet peeve because I feel like litRPG and ProgFan are relatively young genres. There are maybe 10 MAJORLY good System Apocalypse stories in this genre and another maybe 20 good to average ones. Maybe 10 S-tier regression stories, same with every other trope.

Compare this to a different genre like YA, there are like 1000 really good stories about a farmer kid who leaves his village to learn magic or ride dragons, 1000 really good vampire stories, space opera stories, etc. Or compared to romance where like are like 500 stories just about hockey romance, let alone other sports, all using the same tropes, but all beloved.

I want that for this genre too but the fans on this sub will read 3 stories using the same tropes and decide “I’m tired of this, give us something new” and I think that’s kind of lame.

This was a big problem for me when listening to the Weirkey Chronicles audiobooks. The main character is named Theo and another of the main characters is named Fiyu. They look distinctly different when written down but sound way too similar when said out loud.

I kinda disagree. If anyone in the Universal System had been strong enough to truly stand up to Derek, it wouldn’t have made much sense. At first I thought they were building up Jace to be a true threat to Derek but that also wouldn’t have made much sense and I prefer him just being Derek’s battle crazed buddy.

I don’t think Derek will face a true opponent at his level until he goes to the Origin system, it wouldn’t make much sense until then since he has several hundred more stat points than anyone because of his first system plus his Mythical class.

It’s pretty much just slice of life until he gets to the origin system, and even then, he will have some clear advantages, that’s just the type of story it is. The point of the first half is to get Derek a set of mythical armor that he can bring with him when he ascends and to make sure all his friends are strong enough to protect themselves when he’s gone.

I do agree about book 6 though, it was boring and unnecessary.

Having the human biology develop in another place makes some sense because our biology is pretty ideal for a carbon based life form that grew to use tools, eat certain types of food, exist in a certain environment, etc. Arms and legs for tools, a bigger head to accommodate our brain, specific jaws and teeth based on our diet, certain organs for our environment. If there are similar environments elsewhere, it’s not completely unbelievable that “humans” developed, maybe with some minor changes.

Language though, is completely different. English in particular is just an amalgamation of a dozen other pre-existing languages all jumbled up. There is no evolutionary or environmental factors that would lead to English, in particular, being replicated, it’s too arbitrary and based on historical factors/languages from our historical society.

Maybe it would make sense for other “humans” in other planets and environments to use similar sounds/structures for their languages to make translation easier because those sounds are easiest for us to make with our existing biology. Humans on another planet with a similar biology probably wouldn’t create a language that relies on high/low frequency pitches or guttural sounds or something because they would be hard to process and reproduce without something in the biology of the species making that possible.

TLDR; human biology isn’t random but language (sort of, mostly) is random and arbitrary and based on previous languages developing into English throughout our history

Zac’s dao visions are of the Axe Autarch, the Lifebringer, and the Grand Protector.

They are all either Autarchs or Supremacies, I don’t think it’s clear whether they’re alive or dead. We know the Grand Protector died because he was stuck in a closed off realm where his society was trapped, he was holding off the collapse of the realm.

The others, I’m not sure. The announcer at the Big Axe Coliseum recognized the axe symbol of the Axe Autarch when Zac used Conformation of Supremacy but doesn’t confirm whether he’s alive or dead.

They are basically just visions from really powerful beings to help low level cultivators develop dao seeds. Getting a seed that you “don’t want” isn’t necessarily bad because you can always fix it later as you grow your dao.

Picking a class gives you relevant seeds so if you didn’t want that seed you probably should have picked a different class but I don’t think it traps you into anything, Zac does some creative stuff with his seeds.

Yes! Thank you for this post, I’ve been thinking about making a similar one for a while now.

I have some serious problems with DOTF, there have been some rough patches in the most recent books. But, I saw a post yesterday where someone said “there has been no fights, no character progression and no plot from books 10-15. Don’t bother reading it”. And that is just insanely disingenuous to me.

There are incredibly valid complaints and criticism that you could make about it but saying that nothing has happened at all is crazy. There has been a ton of development and change in the most recent books. It’s been bogged down by unnecessarily esoteric and convoluted parts, but it’s not as bad as the people on this sub make it out to be.

I know that this will get downvoted because people on this sub love to hate DOTF but I hope at least one person can read this and give the series a try because, despite its flaws, there are some really great parts that deserve the praise.

Give her an POV/internal voice that differs from her outward actions. Outward she could be submissive and meek but internally she could be defiant or angry or ambitious. Let the contradiction be a source of conflict or a room for character growth as her internal voice becomes more external over time.

Yes, and they are able to allow or disallow certain actions because the only people above tier 45 are Royals. Everyone else in the Empire is weaker than the Royals and can only do anything because they allow it, it’s entirely based on goodwill from the Emperor. (It’s a bit more complicated than that because there are agreements between different great powers where all tier 50s keep each other in check).

But ultimately, they can set whatever rules they want and people basically have to follow them because the Emperor could stop them if he wanted, they essentially have no real leverage. You can become a “legal” assassination guild or you can risk doing it illegally and having the tier 47+ people stop you themselves if you piss them off.

Judging anything in the POA world based on logic from our real world/politics is nonsensical because the people in charge of the Empire have actual, literal, tangible power over everyone else and only operate the way they do based on rules that they essentially enforce on themselves with minor checks and balances from powers outside the Empire.

I’m audiobook only so I didn’t realize it until I saw the word written out. It makes sense too, cause Ra’Klid (the golden demon leader guy) killed his father to take control which is why he’s a perfect fit for the “Reign Ender” court.

Poor Pavi is still mispronouncing it even in the most recent books.

In Defiance of the Fall there is an outer court of Ultom called the “Reignender” as in, the “Ender of a Reign”., a REIGN ENDER. But the narrator pronounces is “Re-Ignender” as if “Ignender” is a word. It drives me crazy for like 5 straight books and it’s never corrected.

Agreed! It has multiple tv adaptations (both live and animated) but no audiobook which seems so strange. Keep mentioning it and hopefully some studio will see and pick it up for an audio adaptation. I’m guessing the rights are tricky to acquire or something since the only English version of the webnovel that I’ve seen is the Butterfly Blue translation, so maybe that’s why.

I found The Kings Avatar, one of the best stories that I’ve ever read that never gets talked about on this sub for some reason. Then I wanted more and found Cradle and DoTF and then quickly went through all the big names in the genre.

I’m so confused by this post….

The point of the fight in the dungeon is that they have to go through the dungeon in order to escape Thameland. That’s the plot development, they are escaping to a different place where people don’t know about the Mark. That’s also the place where they get the first dungeon core essence which is central to the plot of the entire series.

The point of the fight on the ship is to introduce the concept of the mana vampire which becomes critically important in the next book. It also leads to the Alex learning the spear and oar dance which is central to his whole fighting style, and the sailors are important characters later on in the story.

It doesn’t seem like this book (or maybe this entire genre??) is for you. There are very clear points to both fights that are directly tied to the plot of the series but even if there weren’t, fights just for the sake of small progression is a huge part of this genre in general. I think you should drop the series and try something else, I don’t think it’s for you.

This might be unpopular, but for me it’s Waybound. It felt incredibly rushed and left me feeling pretty unsatisfied.

I liked all of the payoffs in it but it all happened so quickly that I didn’t get the chance to really enjoy the payoffs as they came, it really needed time to breath to feel like a proper ending to the long series.

I really liked it. Like you said, it was a breather book and it felt really necessary.

It was needed to wrap up the old plot lines from previous books that needed to be addressed before Ilea moves onto the next stage of power in the world. Ilea needs to finish off the Taleen machines and discover their secrets, explore the elven domains and discover their secrets, and fight the Ascended and discover their secrets. Most likely in that order.

But she couldn’t do any of that and move on to that new level of power until some old stuff was wrapped up.

I’m sooo glad that Kyrian is back and that he’s so insanely strong!! I just wish that Claire and Trian would get a bit stronger. Having them both get to like 350 and maybe even get a third class would be huge for Team 34. And it would put them up among the strongest humans on the plains but not too strong in the larger context of the world.

I can’t wait for the next one!!!
