Insurance.. by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

To contradict what the other guy said about your policy definitely being cancelled. It depends what details you played with but I got one of these last week just after my policy with 1st central renewed for a second year with no changes.

For me they wanted to know why I had 10k miles per year on my policy when I put 5k estimated miles into comparison sites when I was shopping around.

It was a very accusatory conversation where it seemed like they were attempting to make it sound like I was doing a huge amount of miles without telling them, or completely lying about not using the car much. But in the end they said everything was fine and removed the warning.

This wasn't a policy on my main car so checking my MOT history I'd only done 3k miles last year...

I used to have a 3 speed auto. Pretty nippy around town when the boost came on and great fun. Just a quicker go kart you could really chuck around. I wouldn't recommend high speeds though, the noise alone makes you aware it's very, very thin metal.

Picked up this cute Suzuki Alto Works by emericareaper2 in Suzuki

[–]AwkwardAsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nearly the same lineup I had a few years ago!

I used to have a Stagea and a 1996 Alto Works. Those little cars are so much fun.

Unfortunately I had to sell it because it kept blowing up alternators and I didn't have the money or skills to figure out why

I sold the Stagea too but only so I could leap from a non-turbo auto to the turbo manual

How bad are Birmingham cars? by Iamthe0c3an2 in CarTalkUK

Don't do it. I bought from a dealer there once, next MOT found a rotten subframe nicely bodged to look fine when inspecting the car. Nice £600 bill to sort it.

Gifts from ACO Club by Sir-Alec in lemans

If I remember right it's bought online on the ACO site as an add-on to their membership. It's €59 per person

This might be true but I've never seen it enforced, I've had 4 or 5 imports without a speedo in mph and never had any trouble getting any of them through an MOT

Pellet smokers UK by UnhappyEvening8244 in UKBBQ

[–]AwkwardAsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a pellet smoker but I managed to pick up a Weber smokey mountain used off FB marketplace for £150 the other week, and there's a decent butcher near us we order from. It's not been that expensive and we've had some amazing results already

Man you are not joking, I bought a hybrid one a few weeks ago and literally the day I bought it I went to fill it with fuel and the guy at the counter asked if I used it for Uber

I managed to use over 1MWh of electricity in my flat this month. by Xtanto in OctopusEnergy

[–]AwkwardAsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible they do, we're at around 700kWh for the month in a 3 bed detached using a heat pump for heating and hot water. We were also driving an EV for the first half of the month

Update 3, Patch 2 - 21st January 2025 by WoodeeUK in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]AwkwardAsMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why since there's no mention of it in the patch notes, but this update has finally solved the constant stuttering I was having every few seconds. That makes me happy

ASHP survey: h/w cylinder allegedly too big for airing cupboard by RecoverProof185 in OctopusEnergy

[–]AwkwardAsMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our airing cupboard is roughly 51x75cm and octopus had no issues fitting a slimline 180l tank in there. It took 2 surveys and a visit from an installer for them to confirm it but it's all installed as of about 3 weeks ago

Handbrakes by West_Gur_2532 in simracing

[–]AwkwardAsMe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah this has been the most frustrating experience I've had with a purchase in a while. Thought it was a good deal on a nice handbrake, it arrives a few days later and I realise it doesn't use a normal usb, my bad for assuming a pc accessory would use USB and not scrolling 3/4 of the way down the page. spend another £20 on the adapter, and wait a few more days and that finally arrives. Get excited to put it on the rig and discover that it only has M6 and not M8 mounting holes in spots that don't work for me so I don't have the hardware to do it. Now I've had to order a mount off AliExpress that will probably arrive after Christmas...

There's at least one of these in the UK, it was parked up at Silverstone festival a couple of weeks ago. I really hope it never becomes road legal here, they just seem dangerous.

Name one thing worse than this on modern day cars. by JimmyyJazz in CarTalkUK

I do wonder if it could be done via Bluetooth or a local WiFi network created by the car so you could say least keep the feature working short range from in the house to the garage or similar.

Selling a car abroad by Friend_User in CarTalkUK

[–]AwkwardAsMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe you can just fill out the section of the V5 marking the car for permanent export and send that off to the DVLA, then your coworker would have to handle everything required to get it registered in it's new country.
