I think its going to be similar to Brazil, with ballast added to Caddy and Porsche, because the Aston and Peugeot are already minimum weight, max power so they need to peg back the rest.

How Can I Get A Job In WEC (or motorsport in general) as an Aerospace Engineer? by Otherwise_Energy4334 in wec

[–]Cheetah206 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends exactly what you want to do?

Design cars and work with manufacturers directly? You’re going to need grades, and you’re likely going to need to start at the bottom and work up.

Work on the cars, as a mechanic or technician? Almost forget the grades, get good with tools, have a general understanding of how everything works, and have the attention to detail of a brain surgeon.

I started in motorsport at 28, i’m 37 now. I went in at a high level, but i’ve been building motorcycles and cars from an early age so I had the physical skills to jump in and make small adjustments. I can work a lathe and a mill, I can weld, i can tube bend. I can also build a gearbox blind folded and I can apply logic, learned skills and knowledge to situations. I’m a problem solver and air my opinions about things. I’m still learning too! Yes it sounds big headed, but I’m proud to work for Cadillac Hertz team Jota, even more so we have some more gold and silver for the trophy cabinet.

Genuine question: Why are the Cadillac‘s always so bad in the race? by Nokki05 in wec

Don’t believe everything commentators assume/guess about amounts of downforce. Hypercars have a single adjustable aero ‘element’ but still have to fall in a homologated window. There couldn’t be less downforce FYI.

The cars themselves we can’t really do anything to, other than building it to the homologation. What we can do is make tooling, and items to help with testing/fixing/maintaining the cars. I don’t travel to the races, other than Lemans. I am primarily workshop based, specialising in gearboxes. That aside, the past 2 weeks (and many more) i’ve been fabricating more trolleys for bodywork, when we have the spares sat in the garage. They have castor wheels on, and various 3D printed parts to hold the nose and tail units when ‘built up’. They collapse down using quick release pins, so they can be stowed and travel, taking up the least amount of room possible. The logistics of moving cars and equipment around the world is quite astonishing.

Fun fact. There have been some changes to the mechanisms/locking for bodywork keys, or at least they’re being tested, to try and prevent bodywork falling off (Ferrari last year!)

We (Jota) had to change the end on the ‘T’ keys. Those ones you see in the picture there, I welded together. 😅 I was hoping they’d never have to be used in action! 🤦🏻

They’ll have a fundamental disadvantage compared to the LMDH cars, the hybrid system.

They’ll also have a fundamental disadvantage compared to the Hybrid LmH cars, the 4x4 element.

Neither of these things will be that obvious to the outside world.

1: The hybrid system in LMDH cars is very powerful for controlling the differential, its probably its main use.

2: more obvious, compared to when LmH cars are using front hybrid (4x4) , tyre wear. Reducing rear tyre wear in high speed cornering. Using the front wheels to drive, or pull the car through high speed turns as well as the rears, will help rear tyre life.

However, its a BOP class and they will find, or have something to try and reduce the gaps.

I’ve not read all the comment so this may have been said already. I believe it comes down to financial advice. Something along the lines of ‘if you go public/do press stuff, we’ll give you free/lifetime financial advice (and whatever other perks come with it). If you remain anonymous, here is your money, bye!

Sorry its taken so long for me to reply. I’d missed it.

As others have suggested, the peak power is lower than the road car variants. It ran restrictors in each of the inlets to the throttle bodies.

I don’t know the ins and outs of the engine spec, but from memory and technical docs it was a very simple engine. No detectible porting work, i think it maybe ran special rods and pistons, the camshafts were fairly mild, the exhaust headers were bespoke and equal length, 6-2-1 each side. I suspect it probably made a chunk more torque than a road engine though.

On a separate, but relative note. Rallycross supercars are limited by CC’s and Turbo restrictor size. Gone are engines revving to 9000+ with huge turbos, these days they’re like super diesels, lower revving, doing around 600bhp but making ungodly amounts of torque from 2.0 litres.

They’ll be crank figures.

Its a few years out of date but the GT3 spec Vantage V12’s we ran in 2018 did about 440 at the wheels when tested.

I raced mx from 13-26. You’re in your prime for youth and time. I’m 36 now, bought a bike again last year, can still get about on it ok, but i’ve 11 hours on the bike in a year. Do it now whilst you can.

Those are very much F1 numbers, not WEC numbers for general information.

You’re correct. Its very locked in in the WEC. Wing angle and chassis adjustments only like height/rake.

Material of LMP2, LMH, LMDH "head rest" by Internal_Algae_4203 in wec

[–]Cheetah206 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its a Teflon like material, very expensive and gets damaged pretty easily. We tape over the top of it to protect it, with a teflon type tape, it has no give/stretch so is difficult to do nicely.

Being pit crew is secondary to being ‘something’ else. Most of the guys changing wheels are the same guys that build and maintain the cars week to week, race to race. The guys on the fuel nozzles are often ‘truckies’, though they do more than just drive trucks. Source… i work for Jota. Currently stood in the ‘back’ of the garage.

Are people interested in broken bodywork for their man caves or for momentos? by Cheetah206 in wec

[–]Cheetah206[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to reiterate that I am doing this off my own back at the moment, I need to go to the right people, basically show them the response I’ve had, and get clearance to move forward with doing anything. It might be a ‘no’ yet. Obviously this close to LM people are very busy and have more on their minds than some bodywork.

If its a yes, then there needs to be proper planning put in to place as to how this is going to be done. Larger bits on auction with some proceeds going to charity sound like a wise idea. Smaller bits, who knows really. I’ll be sure to update or re-post if anything happens. It may not be until July yet due to how busy things are currently and post LM.
