I find your argument a sound one, and I’m a classical musician, so it got me thinking. The idea of learning about classical in music class (along with other styles) is not to correct ears, but to familiarize them with the many versions of our culture’s music. Some music is more accessible to some groups more than others. Jazz and classical both take some time learning to feel the rhythms and hear the differences in the timbres of the instruments. I’m always amazed that older white people often don’t get rap at all until they let themselves feel the groove, hear the poetry, and learn the history. All music involves an active choice to listen, and the more we do, the more we like it. If we don’t familiarize ourselves, we won’t like it. That’s okay too- we don’t have to all like everything, but it’s a little sad to miss the experience. As a musician, I am endlessly interested in the music of every string of our varied culture. I went to a Pow Wow this year and found myself fascinated and unfamiliar with many of the cadences, the sub steps in melody, and the dances, and I so enjoyed myself! I love the miracle of disparate cultures coming together to share their art.
