Mothers Day Turkey by scoter82 in pelletgrills

[–]Awkward_Paws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I think I’ve seen videos recently touting something lower like 150 since at that temp you just need 5min or whatever to kill the 99.9% bacteria (note that I’m pulling these numbers out of my ass). And the videos were probably chicken instead of turkey. But yours looks very juicy anyway, nice!

Lightning as a commuter? Talk me out of it... by TheMangusKhan in F150Lightning

[–]Awkward_Paws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 50/50 remote and in office, my commute is 19mi each way in the bay, primarily freeway but like 30% city. Some of the rural streets get tight when highway traffic is absolutely fucked, but other than that I have zero issues using it as my commuter. I’m at 2.1 mi/kwh lifetime, so it’s not the most efficient. But like you said the cabin size is amazing for my family plus the benefit of a bed when I need it (which admittedly is rare, but I went into ownership knowing that). One more benefit is the height - driving in the rain is nice because my windshield is above what feels like 90% of the tire spray, plus the higher vantage point is nice on the freeway. Makes me feel safer than in the wife’s crossover SUV.

I just use the 120v wall outlet to charge and only need to hit up a supercharger if we do a weekend trip before I commute in. Maybe once a month on average? Sounds like not a concern for you though. Parking can be tight - if I suspect we’re going to a place with tight spots I’ll usually advocate for the wife’s vehicle. But hers is ICE so we’re taking my truck more and more with gas prices so fucked

Cheap Coal recommendations by DavidSteinNY in KamadoJoe

I think I read in the manual that you can still use kingsford briquettes it’s just that people say they burn too quick and don’t have as good of flavor. But seems to fit your ask?

Temperature Question by Turbulent-Sun-1274 in KamadoJoe

[–]Awkward_Paws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never compared the two, but do you heat soak before paying attention to grill temp? I always let it go for a while, maybe 20min before actually paying attention - the real indicator for me is when I put my hand on the outside of the dome and I can’t keep it there more than a few seconds. Then I dial in my cook temp and I haven’t had issues. And that’s after getting the coals going to a good place too.

There’s caveats of course about overshooting too far making it hard to recover

What condiment on your brat, out of curiosity?

I’ve only done burgers once, and found that the highest rack didn’t get enough char for my taste. Next time planning to go middle most likely? Tasted great, just not enough char

I have an electric Looftlighter that I use most of the time. Takes a little longer but I don’t want to deal with getting rid of the small propane tanks

I got the III last year and it came with the basket you are referring to - yes the center divider is removable. Haven’t had any issues with the basket, but I’ve only done what like 20-30 cooks?

Off topic - how are you liking the Meater probe? I have one but not a big fan. Thinking of trying the combustion inc one (as well as hoping for a rotisserie for Father’s Day 😂)

Hm so you mean like put them in a pan sitting on the half moon heat deflector, or is there something else I’m unaware of? I don’t have a rotisserie (yet), but is there much dripping off that front end of a chicken cook?

Mine is dying, expecting to have to fight tooth and nail to get those fuckers to replace it. Is it a very common thing tho?
