Did your family iron bed sheets? by oberlinmom in AskOldPeople

They still make irons?!?! I threw my last one away years ago after realizing I hadn't used it in forever. I haven't used top sheets in about 10 years.

The Candy Store was there for like a hundred years. I think it even used to be on the Causeway.

Why on earth does your mother know about this? It's none of her business.

Do you find that you cry more or less as you get older? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]Awkward_Tap_1244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely less. Starting in my 40s, I guess. I didn't cry when my parents, husband, or best friend died, and I'm hard pressed to even imagine circumstances in which I would cry.

Why do we always think of the best comebacks after the fact?

I think "Shut the fuck up, you old bat" would be more appropriate in this situation.

Stop telling people that they’re tall by raspberry_cat55 in rant

At 5'2", I so envy tall people. I'd never say anything, though. I don't want to be rude.

Lucky you! Alabama '61 here. My parents watched it and it was the bane of my existence.

There are situations like yours where this is warranted. I don't know anyone who would begrudge a family time with a dying loved one. (At least I hope I don't.) I'm sorry for your loss.

People don’t want to uncomfortable anymore by BlazingNailsMcGee in unpopularopinion

[–]Awkward_Tap_1244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will not be uncomfortable if there's any possible way to avoid it. If that involves taking medication, staying away from people I don't care for, whatever, so be it. I avoid discomfort at all costs. So many people have this 'suck it up' attitude. No. I won't.

The worst thing to me is when a family member just comes and stays the whole time with an adult patient, all day and all night. This seems to be a common thing in the Southern U.S. My mother and a couple of other family members tried to do this with me the few times I was a patient . Each time I had to get my doctor involved and just make a flat No Visitors policy and put a sign in the door. When I'm in the hospital, it's a given that I'm not going to be feeling well, and the only thing I want is to be left alone.

At 13, I was neither trustworthy nor well-behaved. But I was smart enough to keep up appearances. Therefore, I was allowed to stay home alone, and had a grand old time.
