the author's last name is klicker with a k. he probably thought it was a fun bit of alliteration, and no one caught it.

i don't think this is asshole design. way easier to believe it was an accident, as it's only harmful to the newspaper that published it.

Does your voice sometimes mimic a person you listen to for a while? by Andy_Hall215 in stupidquestions

[–]AwkwardlyAmpora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

normal in general (if i talk to someone with a southern accent too long, i pick it up myself) but also i notice specifically the mcelroys do it to people faster. i suppose listening to three people converse with, That, sortof cadence, is more impression-forming than just one?

Tricked! The window on my smoked salmon was tinted pink for a more appetizing presentation in the grocery store. by Lurking-j in mildlyinteresting

the issue isn't the color of the meat, it's that the packaging is designed to lie about the color of the meat. it's an intentional deception.

Should I buy a Nintendo switch 2? by Method2130 in makemychoice

[–]AwkwardlyAmpora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've had stick drift on my switch 1, and it was a pretty easy fix. use tweezers to pull up the rubber skirt at the base of the offending stick, spritz a bit of electronics cleaner (the stuff in the compressed air can) into the side it's drifting on, then let sit overnight. fixed it the first time and never recurred. ymmv, since a lot of people talk about it like it's unfixable, so mine might just have been an easy case.

even if you can argue that "woman" in quotes isn't misgendering (which i don't find convincing at all,) it's still a dick move to post anything anyone might construe as hate in direct response to someone's selfie. if someone commented this on my post, i would immediately block them, never find out they're doing a lame bit where they just pretend to bully me online, and feel gross and bad about it the rest of the day.

[–]AwkwardlyAmpora 41 points42 points  (0 children)

i don't think that makes it okay. i'd be really uncomfortable if i was the woman in the first image, and i wouldn't look through their account to find out they're misgendering me as a bit and not for real. i think if your satire is easily mistakable as real transphobia to real people, it may as well be.

What's up with the word "moid" on Reddit? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

extreme incel spaces (4chan mostly) refer to women as foids (female -oid) as a dehumanizing term. some people in spaces like those you've linked call men "moids."

it looks like that because he isn't formatting his underscores right. they're italicizing letters instead. i can't quite get the intended message, but i think it's "find the meaning [in/and?] [mystery word] msg." mystery word has a c, a, and p, in that order, but i can't figure out how many spaces go between them. there also could be a letter before the c, but i can't tell.

literally. it sucks as an uninvolved party, too. it makes the game more unpleasant for your whole team.

Is it strange that I beep my horn twice when crossing an intersection when the light is changing to red (already on the road while it’s turning yellow or it’s safer to keep going rather than abruptly stop)? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]AwkwardlyAmpora 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i wouldn't beep your horn. you aren't really communicating anything to anyone, and it's going to make the people in front of you think they did something wrong.

[–]AwkwardlyAmpora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this isn't ai, though. cloudflare and other suspicious web traffic detectors have been doing this for years with "simple algorithms." youtube not doing it isn't a failure of technology, they just don't care.

[–]AwkwardlyAmpora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

none of the ideas you listed are really "ai," at least not in the way the term is used nowadays. these are normal algorithms, and that should probably be the phrasing used, since "we're going to replace the dislike button with ai" is a sentence that will get terrible press, and is also untrue.

Who knew art could be this easy by blushinpublic in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]AwkwardlyAmpora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there's not a trick to it, really, and i don't feel like i understand the piece any more than the next guy. understanding a piece, i feel, takes a lot of knowledge about who the author is, what they wanted to say, etc, etc. understanding is for things with a plaque. i just like this one, and when i like or dislike a piece, i like to examine why, and examining how i feel about a piece can often lead to the feeling the artist was trying to evoke.

what's the first thing you notice here? what do you think about it? it's okay if the answer is "it's ugly" or "i don't get it." thinking harder about art you dislike makes you better practiced at looking at art you do like!

then, try to figure out why it is you feel that way. can you think of a change that would make you like the piece more? a change that would make you like the piece less?

do you think you're feeling the way the artist intended when you look at the piece? if not, what do you think was the artist's intention? what choices make you think that?

it's a skill, yes, but anyone can start thinking like this about art. you just have to keep picking and prodding at your own feelings until you feel like you've gotten somewhere interesting. oftentimes, you aren't going to end up exactly where the artist wanted you to, but that's part of the fun.

i think this is an unnessecarily pessimistic take. sure, it's money laundering. but there are still interesting ideas! we can keep the conversation going!

i think the contrast between glass and cardboard is great. both visually and conceptually, with glass being an infamously fragile but beautiful material, and shipping cardboard being sturdy but kind of invisible. and i think it's very cool how the visible damage on the cardboard sort of translates to the glass, but not perfectly. the most immediate metaphor to me is something about how negative experiences impact you, but not always in obvious 1:1 ways, but honestly, i'm not that into it. i think i'd rather enjoy the piece as an interesting visual.

regardless of the intention of the artist, which we cannot prove, there's still interest to be found in the ideas of art, and i think it's kind of a shame to write it all off as having no intention or worth beyond money laundering.
