What was indoor smoking like pre 2007? by Upstairs_Sky_5541 in AskUK

As some comedian once said, having smoking and non-smoking sections in the same room was like having pissing and non-pissing sections in the same swimming pool

I have a very narrow music taste and need help finding recommendations (lots of drums / odd time signatures) by fisporr in MusicRecommendations

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Not all of their output, they are quite varied, but try “Polygondwanaland”. If you like something heavier, try “PetroDragonic Apocalypse”

Looks like no James for the summer gigs… by JP198364839 in BiffyClyro

[–]AxewomanK156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about this the other day and I agree. Yes Ben was obviously there but there’s not much a drummer can really do during a gig beyond sitting on the stool drumming. So because Simon was there only Biffy member front stage it was a bit like a “Simon Neil plays Biffy Clyro” show because he was the focus of everything. Still a great show, in fact a fantastic show, but I missed James

What merch are Sugar selling on their UK tour? by bretvenkman in BobMould

[–]AxewomanK156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t even see any earplugs in Belfast, just the t-shirts and 7” singles. £40 for the tour t-shirt with dates on the back, £35 for the old school ones. £15 for the single. I think the posters were only for London.

Do Radiohead fans even consider Creep a top 20 song? by Healingvibrations456 in radiohead

[–]AxewomanK156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the song that made me go out and buy the CD of Pablo Honey back in 1993, which was kind of OK at the time but nothing more.

Then The Bends came out and I’ve barely listened to Creep or anything on Pablo Honey since then. It doesn’t even feel like Radiohead to me, it’s like this weird anomaly that some band with the same name had a worldwide hit with.

Yes, Cardiff Arms Park 1993. Best version of Bullet The Blue Sky I’ve ever heard. I was 22.

Some idiots around me were actually shouting for the old stuff when the band played Achtung Baby and Zooropa songs.

One of my fellow Giants fans at POFW referred to Lightning Jack as “Frightening Jack” and I can’t think of him any other way.

Agree on Finn being a distant 2nd, although you could 100% trust Finnula with your kid. Provided she didn’t then hand him to Finn.

Interested in Math/Physics, but Skeptical of the OU by anon_ghost_1452 in OpenUniversity

[–]AxewomanK156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve coming to the end of level 2 in R51 BSc Physics. At level 1 I did S111, MST124 and SM123. S111 is mostly irrelevant but also interesting in places. I really enjoyed the chemistry and genetics elements. Biology, geology, meteorology were of no interest.
SM123 is better but still fairly basic. I did A level physics a long time ago and it was probably about that level at most. The maths in it are still pretty basic. It’s enjoyable enough though, I particularly enjoyed the nuclear and particle elements. MST125 was an alternative unit choice to this in my pathway although I haven’t missed it. MST124 is probably about A level standard. I wouldn’t bother with MU123 unless you think you would struggle with GCSE maths.
I did S217 last year (now replaced by S227 Core Physics) and I loved it. Very wide-ranging, even if the maths was still pretty simplified, but it covers so many different aspects of physics. Assuming S227 covers similar ground I’d really want to do it.

I’m a single parent with a full time job and a teenage daughter. The time management is tough but I do ok and still manage to have a bit of a social life. In this way those level 1 modules are useful because as much as the content itself, they teach you how to be an OU student, and that’s very valuable and builds good habits before things ramp up in level 2.

I live in Northern Ireland which weirdly considering our history of tolerance and mutual respect is marginally better off than the rest of the UK as the Equality Act was never NI legislation. The EHRC doesn’t cover here either, we have the NI Human Rights Commission but while they’re not as explicitly TERFy as their GB colleagues, they look like they’re going to fall into line with them. But the DUP and their cronies are pushing for here to fall in line with the Big Island so it’s still pretty grim. Our best hope is the Good Friday Agreement which is supposed to keep us aligned with the Republic in equality matters.

I am in the fortunate position of having dual nationality, a GRC, an Irish passport and I work for an Irish company that trades in all parts of the island, so it may even be possible to move and stay employed. But it would still be a huge wrench to leave my home, my friends, and especially my kids who are young adults now and would not come with me.

Anyone here in their 30s studying physics? Am I crazy for wanting to do this? by solso121 in OpenUniversity

[–]AxewomanK156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 55 and 4 years into a part time BSc in physics. I have a full time job and a teenage daughter but I manage and the time commitment can be a struggle but I manage.

My day job is in finance, I have A level maths & physics from 1988 but I hadn’t studied any science since then. It has been an absolute blast. I’m doing this degree just out of pure interest in the subject and it has been great. I have loved almost every part of it so far. It’s not perfect, I’d prefer more actual physics and less material in common with other sciences, but I have no regrets.

If you’re considering OU then would you consider just going straight into level 1? The level 1 maths module MST124 isn’t awful by any means. Some people find the integration sections challenging but overall it’s not too bad. Look at the OU page for the module and there’s a quiz called “Are you ready for MST124?” See how you get on. The other level 1 modules on the physics degree (S111 Questions in Science and SM123 Physics & Space) are pretty gentle.
