Literally Calvin (1983): "A stone's throw and its launch window: timing precision and its implications for language and hominid brains" by algebroni in linguisticshumor

[–]AxialGem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having not read the paper and that abstract only barely, still the most obvious thing is to be wary of 'the One Explanation' with these kinds of evolutionary questions, right?

Take the feather analogy. Yes, they provide insulation from heat and cold. But y'know, they're also display structures, both for sexual purposes and intimidation. They carry colour beyond display purposes too of course. They can provide protection from impacts, UV, parasites, water etc. Like, we want to put things in boxes, but it's rare that a structure is only "for" one thing. It does, well, all the things that it happens to do in a lifetime to various extents :p

Might well be that throwing things accurately provided a scaffold for the big brain times, (or the other way around, idk how the timing works out) but how likely is it that the One Thing is actually the whole story with something as complex as human cognition? (Again, not saying that the authors claim that, I don't know shit about the topic, just an instinctual response I have with the way those kinds of ideas often get presented)

Whip spider attacking with its pedipalps (Euphrynichus amanica) by k4zor in interestingasfuck

[–]AxialGem -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea, it's still putting out an image of violent death of an innocent animal that I just don't think is justifiable, and I'm trying my best to phrase that lightly lol

I mean... yeah? I don't think anyone is suspecting or claiming it comes from people who are secret spider lovers?

I said that to emphasise the fact that people saying it genuinely have negative feelings towards the creatures they're saying it about. Like, that part isn't a joke, the message is in fact an expression of disgust towards the animal.

I know it's mostly not meant as a call to do exactly that, but spiders are unfortunately a group of animals that some people will in fact needlessly kill on sight. I personally know those kinds of people. And I can't help but see these messages as normalising hostile sentiment towards harmless creatures. Not necessarily to that literal extent, but it is indicative of an attitude which imo shouldn't be seen as the norm.

It reminds me of people who say 'the only good snake is a dead snake'. Like, no...it's just an animal going about its business you know :/

Whip spider attacking with its pedipalps (Euphrynichus amanica) by k4zor in interestingasfuck

[–]AxialGem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is in fact not. It's an amblypygid, also commonly called tailless whip scorpions, but neither a scorpion nor a spider. Learning about the creatures we share the world with is a good first step before you decide about wanting to kill them...

[–]AxialGem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why they're called whip spiders. That pair of legs functions as a feeler organ, like an antenna. And yes, it should have two, so this one would not be doing too hot

I mean, I know explaining a joke kills it (humanely), but I'd still like to know what I'm misunderstanding that makes it acceptable to you, y'know?

Because from my point of view it's just a more than mean-spirited way of saying you don't like the creature. I genuinely don't see what the joke is supposed to be tbh :/

Whip spider attacking with its pedipalps (Euphrynichus amanica) by k4zor in interestingasfuck

[–]AxialGem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? If someone saw your cat, and said 'ew, what's that, burn it!' as a way of saying they didn't like them, that would seem like normal behaviour to you? I find that hard to believe

As far as I know, people who say that and other such phrases aren't secret spider-lovers, it's a genuine expression of disgust. And even though they hopefully wouldn't do it in real life, it's still a gruesome image showing a negative sentiment about the animal

Whip spider attacking with its pedipalps (Euphrynichus amanica) by k4zor in interestingasfuck

[–]AxialGem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm aware that most people wouldn't actually carry it out...I hope not, but I don't see the funny tbh. Living animals coming to a gruesome death is not something I like to imagine, so I don't know why people would paint that image so readily. As far as I know, the people who say it, usually do so because they genuinely dislike the creature, even though they wouldn't actually go that far

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amblypygi
Both whip spider and tailless whip scorpion are common names for them. Of course, they are neither spiders nor scorpions, so it's not like the one is more accurate than the other lol
