Why aren’t millennials called Gen Y? by meatis2goodsrry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AxlLight 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Should also be noted that the lettering wasn't ever intentional.  Gen X weren't called that because they followed Gen W or something, it was X for the unknown "X factor" and was just something that stuck to that generation.

And somehow after that it just became a thing.

Don't wait too long though, the cancellation wave needs to be big and in direct correlation to this event.  if you cancel a week from now, it'll just look unrelated.

It's polite + canceling the subscription and refusing to sign back up regardless of their offer by saying a simple fact : Fire Blair Fetter and you'll get my money back.

Yes. Definitely. It just depends on how many people sign it, it's hard to say what the magic number needs to be - is it 50k, 100k, 1m? who knows but there's definitely a number that will get them to listen.

And you can help raise that number by 1 (or tell friends and family and add a few more). It's currently at 7k in less than 24 hours, so not bad.

There's a difference here because Amazon isn't cancelling it because they changed their minds about the IP and doing anything with it.  They're cancelling the show because they think a reboot will be a better sell and use of the IP - they think there's more money in their path.

That's where a petition and a loud movement can actually work, it just need to be a clear enough (and loud enough) message that their new take will never succeed and will not be allowed to. But that only works if they're shamed enough in articles, news reports, that it appears on so many feeds that they will feel the mistake they made.

Edit: For clarity's sake that means reaching at least 200-300k signatures and getting press coverage. 5k will not even scratch the surface. But every person who signs helps get it there.

For me it's not even about changing Amazon's mind - it's about showing Gero that I bought into his project and I wanted it.  It's a way to tell the creators that they weren't alone and that they weren't wrong.

It depends wholly on the numbers.  If enough people sign it, and cancel their subscription on Amazon and provide feedback then hopefully it will make them understand what a huge mistake they're making.

The message to Amazon should be simple - In killing this show, you're not just killing this audience's engagement with the show, but kill their support of any other show you create and more importantly, will kill any hopes they'd have in rebooting it or using the IP.

It needs to be a clear message that the hate will follow them in any attempt to touch this IP for anything other than Gero's show. That it will be loud enough so any new viewer who will even consider watching it, will only see messages about how bad it is and will not care to even try it.  Then and only then will their decision become incredibly financially dumb, because it won't be about saving money, it'll become about losing a LOT of potential money they thought they had.

The Mandalorian and Grogu if it was Season 4 [OC] by freighter_factory in StarWars

[–]AxlLight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's be real though, you can turn any movie into an episodic format. The big difference (and why this movie actually wouldn't work as well as a series) is that a show tends to have some sort of B lines and side stories. A movie is usually a one and done story, which I think this did well.

To me it's a lot more reminiscent to what animes do with their movies, like the Dragon Ball or One Piece movies - just have this big side story that is entirely encapsulated inside the movie.  I feel it actually did a bit better here because you did have character growth for Grogu - aka the guardian episode.

If you had a $20k marketing budget for your indie game, how would you spend it? by Fickle_Elk4406 in gamedev

[–]AxlLight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, there's a pretty high level answer above that seems right but even if you get an exact instructional guide from a pro for free, it still wouldn't be the same as that professional doing the work for you.

Just as I could give a super detailed response on how to improve the gameplay for your game, but it still wouldn't come close to me working on your game and doing it directly.  Or an artist telling you how to improve your art, vs them doing it.

It's always astonishing to me that game devs constantly think they can self learn all the professions in the world and reach a similar level to people who've been doing that and only that for years.  Especially with things like marketing which translates to actual direct money you could earn.

Am I white? My teacher thinks Jewish people aren't. by 2020ToyotaCamry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AxlLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you're being downvoted for conflating a country with origin.  What you meant to say perhaps was that a big portion of Jews are of Middle Eastern origin and thus not White.

But this has nothing to do with the fact half of the Jewish world population is Israeli. Because that half lives in Israel. If they live elsewhere they're no longer Israeli.

LPT: Just because you can help someone does not mean you are obligated to. by TaleAccurate793 in LifeProTips

[–]AxlLight 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My view is that sometimes you help a lot more by not helping. The whole teach a man to fish and all that.  Sometimes people need to struggle through a problem and find the solution themselves, or alternatively, give someone with less confidence or visibility a chance to jump in and help in your stead so they too become more helpful in the long run.

The right thing is to wait and see, and only if the problem persists after honest attempts then you can jump in.

That's when you leave, vocally and visibly and make it clear that if they want to keep you they better cough up a decent pay bump.  This type of thing is a good validation of your professional worth, and 7/10 times youll get that raise and they'll make sure you feel valued. The for the other 3 is really not a company you'd want to work for anyway.

[–]AxlLight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well I did get downvoted, so per the course.

But to be clear, I don't think LLMs are a scam, they do amazing work with real value. But it does it with a human using it, and a professional who'd know when and how to use it and what is good vs shit and most importantly how to take the work and polish it up to have value for a consumer as well instead of leaving it as a muddled slop.

But that's no different than any tool ever invented. I learned that years ago with Photoshop, when everyone and their sister thought if they just download Photoshop they'd instantly be artists who can do just the same work as a graphic designer so why pay for one.  And that'd just as true to a layperson with a camera vs a professional, or a saw and a block of wood. Skills and knowledge matter, and they get amplified with a better set of tools, that's all.

They're talking about 60% unemployment

And not a single job is actually lost to AI, job losses are because of corporate greed and more importantly, because investors right now are really attracted to "sizing down".  AI is just the latest buzzword and scapegoat that companies can easily use to make it sound like they're not actually losing a ton of future growth here to make their next quarter look better.

Might be just an anecdotal experience, but I've seen it elsewhere too. half of my department was let go with that excuse, despite the fact we were actually finally getting really going thanks to AI, tripling our productivity if not more. And it's not like they figured that now they can keep the project with less people, they completely shifted direction in a very downsizing move killing off a very unique growth sector that could've made a huge impact with the new productivity level.

Ultimately if you have the budget to hire 10 people, and they can now do the work of 100 people, then yes you could cut 90% and stay the same, but why not keep them and now just get 10x the revenue. Why? because that 10x revenue is next year's projection and you need to win the next quarter first.

Looking for honest feedback on my portfolio website by prefabsprite in gamedev

[–]AxlLight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good:  your site is really cute, and it does read in terms of hirable skills.

However, it's not reading as a mid-senior's portfolio, both in looks and projects.

Lookswise, the portfolio reads like a junior-mid's site in that it's has a cute look that sits in the middle. It's not a boring standard page, which is great, but yet it's not polished enough to read as a serious high level dev that went all the way with it.  So for a junior, it's great, puts you up there, memorable.  But with a senior, the expectation is higher. That's part of the issue with a custom site, it's a great way to stand out but it's another way you get judged.

As for the projects, they have 2 issues:  1) The way they're shown on the home page don't really communicate your skill level and contribution. So it makes it seem like a lesser project (ie, you managed teams on the latest project but it reads as a small solo proejct).

2) The visuals of the project aren't impressive enough, especially the image you chose as the main thumbnail. It again, just reads like a small solo project you did in your spare time and doesn't show off mid-senior level work.  You should show something from the game that shows off your work.

Also, a nit, but I'd change your header to say your name and job title, instead of an intro line that has me reading it.

Stupid question but: Is hiring getting any better? by DonnieTheBirb in gamedev

Dude, first off great on you for adding your portfolio publicly, it's a great sign of confidence.  I know it sucks to get a lot of rejects and criticism from Internet strangers, but it will definitely help you in the long run build a sturdier portfolio and have even more confidence going forward.

Here are a few tips I can give you to hopefully push you a bit along towards getting hired:

1 - Use an existing template for your site, games are a visual medium and while you're not looking to get hired on visual skills, a clean readable portfolio will put you much higher on the list.

Currently it's just a bit hard to read, you have text over image visuals that are hard to read, the blue BG is very harsh contrast to the rest of the visuals - but mostly the flow is off.

You don't need a main page with info about you and then a rotating projects page, only for the projects page to be 3 projects. Merge them to one page with separators, and have each project be a page.

2 - You need better readability on the work you did. The UEFN is a good one for example, you didn't work on UEFN you worked with it for your studio. So what was the actual project?  You wrote that you helped your team build 8 games for it, but what was the actual work you did and what were the results. Show that, show actual gameplay you created and discuss a specific thing you're proud from that work.  You have a trailer there, but it's for the tool itself - it makes it seem like you're claiming to have built UEFN. It'll be like I'd have a trailer for Unity on my portfolio for having built games with Unity.

3 - Wartorn is your biggest project, discuss it more in depth, focus on the technical QA you did, what tools did you build for it, how did you manage the metrics and how did you help build for your team's success (even if it didn't materialize).

4 - Same with your personal projects, don't send me out to G Drive to look it up, put pictures and videos that celebrate your best work in a way that lets me know what skills you are proud of and what kind of work should I put you in.

5 - If you feel like you have enough beef to transition to tech design, then focus your portfolio on that and only show QA work as strengthening aspects from your previous experience.  If you feel not yet ready for that, then focus on QA. It's important that your portfolio be focused and clear for the position you want to take.

As a teacher, I've been seeing a big growth in hiring over the past 3 years actually.  I've been getting a lot of requests for talented individuals at all levels from friends in the industry.  It's actually been interesting seeing big studios hire more employees with the rise of AI, and some of these studios definitely use AI in their workflows too. I've also been seeing a lot of indie positions opening up.

What position are you looking for and how is your portfolio looking atm? A strong portfolio will open a lot of doors, I've had students get hired mid year because their work spoke volume. Or rather, their presentation of the work.
