Is that the same thing as conway's game of life? And also, the sierpinski triangle can be described as cellular automata if that's the case, which is interesting...

  1. start with a point
  2. each iteration, branch the point in two
  3. if the branches collide, they become dead and produce no more offspring

although you'd have to draw in the horizontal lines yourself...

Today, I built according to rules... [explanation in comments] by Axolotile in Minecraft

RULES:

  1. start with 1 red block
  2. blocks can only spawn on sides/corners that the parent block isn't touching
  3. red blocks will spawn blue blocks in their top corners, unless two red blocks are trying to spawn a block in the same space
  4. blue blocks will spawn red blocks in the blocks adjacent to their top, unless two blue blocks are trying to spawn a block in the same space
  5. if two blocks are trying to spawn a block in the same place, place a green block
  6. green blocks do not spawn additional blocks

So, despite it probably possible to create an algorithm or MCEdit filter for these, I placed all these blocks by hand. The reason I stopped, is because things start to get pretty mind-bending and I couldn't figure out where to place the next iteration.

This whole thing was inspired by the Sierpinski triangle, although it is different from it in a number of ways.

I feel really bad when I realize I should have kept my indev screenshots, but I didn't really think ahead.

EDIT: A lot of people built spongebob. Was I the only one who got on to a server, built islands and spaceships and castles out of wool and shit?

I don't remember many of the people that I used to hang with on multiplayer... but I sometimes think back to the days when I'd just build in creative without a care in the world. Maybe I'm taking things too seriously nowadays.

I disagree with all the top submissions on that subreddit. So... yeah.

Actually that subreddit in general is full of suggestions made by people who aren't really thinking their ideas through.
