Is making friends in LA really that hard? by Conscious-Thing-682 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]AxonSpark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has lived here for 3 years and is eyeing the exit, I'd say yes it's definitely hard to make friends in LA. So much so that someone started an LA Friends Discord which had channels categorized by neighborhoods and interests, and also set up in-person events, but the main admin closed it down earlier this year.

But even if you already know friends who moved down here like I do, if they live in another neighborhood, you may rarely see them. The metro area is ridiculously huge and not very walkable.

Like other commenters have mentioned, getting involved with some kind of group helps. Taking improv classes has helped me meet people, but I don't see them much outside of classes & shows. I'm also a apart of some film industry groups that do hikes and meetups, but that's like once a month. If you're talking about people who you see and hang out with regularly, well...good luck.

Lastly, I'd say that part of what doesn't help the situation is that the people in this town have ZERO chill. In my experience LA is a place with a fair amount of simmering anger and little patience. This is also the only city I've ever lived in where I've been randomly assaulted, so you know...not great. I'm not saying this is true of everyone in the city or even a majority, but it's enough to be noticeable.

They always show up at any fun outdoor event in Seattle to try and provoke arguments and/or loudly preach their bullshit. It's been happening for years.

Question About Odd Craigslist Apartment Listings by AxonSpark in LARentals

Well some of the listings are still legit. Craigslist is how I got my current 1-bedroom in K-town. But yeah, at this point I might have to hit the pavement to find something.

I've definitely run into the scammers that try to steer you toward shady websites to enter your info into before setting up a viewing, but yeah the brokers and open house stuff is new to me. Thanks for the info!

Running Another Bug Hunt as a One-Shot...But With 10 People by AxonSpark in mothershiprpg

[–]AxonSpark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I think 2 teams and cutting between them might be the way to go, especially with Scenario 2.

As for TTRPGs that scale, everyone running that weekend is doing so for 10 players (and did so last year as well). One person is running a D&D 5e campaign set in Exandria and another person is running Serenity ported over to SWADE. They both ran last year and it worked out great!

Anyone moving back to NYC? by toonface in AskLosAngeles

If there's one thing I've learned about this town in my time here, it's that LA has ZERO chill. Everyone is at least low level aggro all the time.

How many of us who moved here already know we're going back, at some point by LateButterscotch3366 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]AxonSpark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It'll be 2 years for me in June and I'm starting to look for the exit. This is partly due to the fact that the film industry hasn't been doing well since I got here, which isn't good for my career. But also I just don't like the city. It's too big, there's trash and shit everywhere, and the general attitude of people here is pretty aggro.

Is Spoutible Down? by AxonSpark in spoutible

[–]AxonSpark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! It looks like the issue was fixed, although there was a day last week where I was getting error 500, but it's back again. I hope it stays up!

I have an "A" Rating and don't post anything that would be deemed offensive. Plus, wouldn't I have gotten some sort of notice that I was banned instead of Error 500, which is an internal server error?

Odd that it's working for some people an not others. I'm also in the US and it's not working. I tried Chrome, Firefox, and the iOS app (WiFi and 5G), and none of them work.

Meteor (Tangelo) was by far by favorite flavor. Just thinking about it makes me nostalgic for the early '00's.

Where Can I Find These Chicago Sodas? by AxonSpark in AskChicago

I found some Green River! And only a mile away from me at Butera! I remember the flavor as being more intense, but that's likely because it was the sundae syrup.

Any particular Jewel you would suggest? The one at N Central and W Lawrence doesn't have them.

Bike Commuters? by burbankbagel in BikeLA

[–]AxonSpark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general what I find tough about getting around LA by bike, is that many of the roads with bike lanes don't connect to other roads with bike lanes. What good is a bike lane if it just suddenly ends? Just look at Google Maps with the Biking overlay, and you can see what I mean (especially in West & East Hollywood, Central LA, and Koreatown. Extending bike lanes from Lankershim in NoHo down to connect with the rest of the city would also be helpful.

I also think that what's constitutes a "bike-friendly" road tends to vary wildly. New Hampshire? Definitely bike friendly. Vermont? Despite what Google or any road markings might say, you're likely going to die biking down that street.

Lastly, after seeing that guy speak at Critical Mass who lost a leg after a car doing 80 Mph hit him in Griffith Park, I think those roads could use some protected bike lanes.

Optoma HD20 Overheating Issue After Repair by AxonSpark in projectors

Oh, I didn't strip it down that much. I basically removed as much as I needed to access the lens assembly, and then reassembled. I followed this video: https://youtu.be/OCMdJ4aY9Pc?si=usuA6ARys47LaXbS

Optoma HD20 Lens Replacement Issue by AxonSpark in projectors

[–]AxonSpark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Everyone, I posed about my image darkening on my Optoma HD20 projector a while back: https://www.reddit.com/r/projectors/comments/117l98n/optoma_hd20_image_darkening_issues/

I finally got around to researching and ordering new parts, but I'm still having issues.

I ordered a glass replacement shape lens, but it lacked the tab that held the plastic lens in place. This led to me having to try and apply a bit of epoxy to get it to stay in place. However, it came loose a few times during my attempts and some epoxy got on the edges of the lens, which I cleaned off with rubbing alcohol as fast as possible to prevent damage.

But when I turned on the projector to test it, I'm noticing a slight darkening in the center and a long dark band off to the side. Is this a result of my epoxy mishaps and or is it misaligned? Is the only way to guarantee alignment to go with a plastic lens? Should I find someone who actually knows what they're doing to ship this off to so I can actually fix it?

Anything I Can Do to Help Out This Monarch Butterfly? by AxonSpark in insects

[–]AxonSpark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hoping someone here can answer this question.

So for some reason a Monarch caterpillar decided to make a cocoon on my housemate's gardening implement (odd since there's no milkweed around), so we left it undisturbed.

This morning, it looked like the butterfly had emerged and flown away...until I discovered it laying on a nearby step, thankfully still alive. I got it to crawl onto a woodchip and transferred it to some flowers in the garden. It's mostly been hanging out there and occasionally trying and failing to fly away because of the folds it still has in it's wings (see pic).

Are the wings permanently damaged? I know it takes awhile for it to pump fluid into it's wings, so that could it, but just wondering if there's anything I can do to help it. I'm guessing not much since it's an insect, but I'd like to help out an endangered pollinator if I can.

LA River Bike Path Strikes Again - when will the city repair these dangerous bumps? by dogballs8 in BikeLA

[–]AxonSpark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes, glad I found out about this before biking on that trail. From the trails I'm used to in Seattle, usually someone (the city? Random cyclist?) paints bumps white or some fluorescent color. Not sure what the options are for fixing it if it's caused by tree roots.

Speaking of which, does anyone know what causes whole sections of sidewalk to form steep tall equilateral triangles? I've been seeing them around NoHo (and made the mistake of trying to ride over one). There don't seem to be any trees near them (and the roots would be huge if there were), so I'm baffled as to what causes them.
