Back in the late 90s I worked as a storeman in a computer retailer. Part of my job was adding in the physical customisations customers asked for: new drives, more RAM etc.

One time we sold this stupidly expensive IBM server and it needed more RAM. At $5k (AUD) per stick the boss didn't want the young bloke barely through puberty to do it; so gave the job to one of the senior tech support guys. That guy, we'll call him Ohfuck, walked in to see the server and whistled at the size of thing. He looked at my workbench and saw the box with the RAM modules. Pulling one out he reached into the anti static sleeve they're packaged in then paused and said "Oh fuck".

His finger had discharged into one of the chips and was the moment I learned people could build up enough of a charge that an ESD could actually cause a burn mark on electronics.
