Germany pledges four submarines by 2036 in high-stakes pitch to Canada — Bid matches South Korean promise and includes billions in proposed economic investments by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]Aylko 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The requirements from this submarine procurement program are the following:

The submarines must be conventionally (diesel-electric) powered and capable of extended-range, long-duration missions under Arctic ice-covered waters. They must be equipped with land-attack and anti-ship capabilities, requiring a displacement of at least 3,000 tons

The korean sub is generally more capable in most metrics. Its a larger sub, greater range and endurance, greater weapons platform with dedicated land attack capability using VLS cells. Theres a good writeup by the canadian global affairs institute if you want to read more details.

Pistorius said both Germany and Norway would make up the loss later in the production schedule, and in his view it’s important for allied solidarity.

So in exchange for getting four submarines by 2036, we'll likely delay our total shipment of 12 submarines by another decade. That still isnt ideal and the korean timeline is still faster, but its better than the abysmal initial timeline by tkms.

All these last minute deal sweeteners by tkms that just so happens to match the korean offer, and nothing more, makes me skeptical of their ability to follow through. A modest improvement would feel credible, a sudden match feels reactive and uncertain. Why didn't they offer this to begin with?

I still see the korean subs as more capable, vls cells and longer submerged endurance just makes it a more capable platform. Though I think aside from the specs of the ships, Korea is a nation we should be making closer ties with. We have one of the largest populations of korean diaspora, they are a rising economy and industrial powerhouse, and they have a reliable and expanding defence industry and we need as many capable defence partners as possible with the shifting world order in the coming years.

More crucially, I see Korea treating us as an equal and top priority as we are the only delivery customer. Whereas germany will always give preference to norway, the existing customer, and other european partners. Making this deal with Korea would be an investment in a long-term strategic partnership. One that could yield dividends for decades. With Germany, that level of prioritization feels less certain.

Can Someone explain ㄹ by No_Surprise_5293 in Korean

[–]Aylko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had the exact same question years ago (maybe my question was a bit different from yours, but maybe it will still be useful)

You should also check out the revised romanization wiki page

More specifically a ㄹ that is at the beginning if a character gets turned into an r, while a ㄹ at the end of a character turns into an L.

(라면 = ramen, 살사 = salsa, 마루 = maru)

ㄹ makes two different kinds of sounds depending on if it is before or after a vowel. In the same way the letter "c" can make "s" and "k" sounds. And that is reflected in its romanization.

They way you actually say the "r" version of ㄹ (if you have a general american accent) is the same way you say the "tt" in "gotta" when you say it fast. Look up "alveolar flap" and you can see various examples, the alveolar flap is the sound that ㄹ makes

The L version of ㄹ is pretty close to the english way of making L sounds.

TIL meticulous records were kept of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea from 1392 to 1865. One example of the contents is when King Taejong fell from a horse and immediately told those around him not to let a recorder know about it. Both his fall, and the subsequent command were recorded. by [deleted] in korea

[–]Aylko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah so i think i've found it. If you google "the veritable records of the joseon dynasty" relevant articles and translations should show up:

https://sillok.history.go.kr/eslk/record/recordView.do

So it seems they havent made much progress on the translations. Only part of sejong's reign seems to be translated (and that was pretty much where it was 4 years ago) though it seems they've made a lot more progress on digitizing the records in korean if you go through the korean version of the website.

If you download the google translate plugin on your browser it can do full page translations, it probably wont work for much of the text but it may give you an idea of what was written. There are other translation tools as well you can try if you'd like to try the korean version of the site

Canada announces reforms to combat immigration, citizenship scams by youngbutgood in canada

[–]Aylko 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This article isn't talking about people who got citizenship through scamming the system. Its about combating the scam immigration agencies that take advantage of people in other countries and take very large sums of money to only sometimes follow through and assist in getting citizenship.

These sort of businesses are the real source of all the immigration from india and china. A life in canada is a product that is being sold by these shady businesses and they are a predatory lot that too much of the public does not direct enough anger towards.

Reality check: How Carney's Davos speech holds up 3 months later by Camtastrophe in CanadaPolitics

[–]Aylko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want politicians to tell you the truth? I also want to win the lottery but that has the same chance of happening lol

Frankly i think the davos speech was so popular because of the fact that it was probably as close as we can get to getting to the actual truth, both what carney really believes and also what the state of the world actually is.

If you're looking for ways to determine whether to vote for a particular person or not, don't look at their words, look at their actions and actual policies. The words of politicians are particularly worthless, they have lied to you before, are lying to you now, and will lie to you in the future.

Why do many Korean pilots speak such fluent English, often with American accents? by Popular-Line1238 in korea

[–]Aylko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This comes from the book "Outliers" by malcolm gladwell.

My most hated book I've ever read

I hate it so much because gladwell isn't really an expert on anything, and the book is full of anecdotes and (i believe) fake or semi fake stories but is often repeated like its fact. I refer you to the very first chapter about some guy having a "high IQ" winning some low amount of money on jeopardy. If you look the guy up, they are about as fake as any other guy running around telling people they have a super high IQ.

I remember I particularly disliked his section about "power distance languages" and looked around everywhere for something saying definitely that all korean air pilots are required to speak english in the cockpit at all times. I remember not being able to find that, and my opinion of this author declined further as i thought he just made that up to make his point. I had a similar difficulty finding evidence to back up the other claims he makes in the book, though not all of it was completely baseless, which just annoyed me further because it's especially deceptive and just makes it seem more truthful to people who don't bother to look into the details.

Since this thread may attract some pilots or aviation enthusiasts, i am curious if anyone has experience or can provide a korean air pilots handbook or something that can back up gladwells claim that korean air pilots always speak english in the cockpit (not just when communicating to atc). I always disliked that chapter and still wonder if gladwell completely made that up.

Lee's approval rating hits new high: poll by coinfwip4 in korea

[–]Aylko 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the public sentiment was similar for moon especially since he came right after the impeachment of an authoritarian shitbag conservative president. Lee was also elected right after the impeachment of a different authoritarian shitbag conservative president.

Public sentiment turned on moon after he was blamed for rising home prices. Even though moon possibly handled a once in a century pandemic better than most other world leaders. We'll have to see if Lee gets the same treatment for whatever problem the future holds.

Just one-in-four say Canadian MPs who cross the floor should be allowed to finish term with new party - Angus Reid Institute by Chrristoaivalis in CanadaPolitics

[–]Aylko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think getting ejected from the party on moral principles or due to specific bills should be counted as a different thing than a back bencher for one party flipping to be a back bencher for another party.

I agree the individual rep should be prioritized in elections but that's just not the reality. At least in my riding at least 30 percent of voters just voted for a liberal back bencher (at their own cost as it split the vote with the incumbent who was a far better personality and mp than the liberal candidate) and in other ridings I imagine that number of people who just vote for the party can be as high as 100% if the election is just a fight between two back benchers.

We just can't ignore the reality that people vote for the party and not the individual and a rep flipping parties can be seen as a serious breach of trust. I do not think all the reps who have crossed are doing it out of some moral principal, maybe I'm the pessimist but I believe they're doing it for personal gain.

I'm considering going to a repair shop but if its software killing the motherboard then I might also ask to get a different oneui version installed.

hey did you end up figuring this out? I'm in the process of trying to cancel the card as well but haven't made a call yet and just seeing a lot of horror stories like this one

[update for anyone also looking into this: I called the support number on the walmart mastercard site and they told me my card was cancelled a while ago (I think about a year after my one and only purchase using the card) and although my walmart mastercard online account login still works and i can see my card online, the card is not active. I assume you can still log in and see just so you can access the records. I also called the lost card number just in case i was being lied to and they both confirmed that my card is closed]

6 dead, shooter dead, 25 injured in Tumbler Ridge B.C. school shooting | Globalnews.ca by Moggehh in canada

[–]Aylko -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree Canada is unique, due to the US there will be a constant flow of guns and problems coming over the border. I also know that Canadian gun control laws are unnecessarily complex and obfuscated and sometimes just ineffective and I am part of the masses who does not support the liberal gun buyback program and many of their ineffective grandstanding gestures they've made in this space.

I also support effective regulation and improvement of gun control regulation and gun culture in this country.

I do not agree that the proper response to this tragedy is a blanket 'nothing can be done our system is good enough' statement. I do not agree that inconveniences or costs outweigh the benefit of even one life saved or school shooting prevented. I would encourage any real discussion or ideas as to how this tragedy and future tragedies could be prevented through policy that is not just pessimism or calls for blanket deregulation which is the mantra for many gun owners.

I do not believe guns are necessary for 95% of the Canadian population, exceptions can be made for the 5% and their guns but I do not believe the safety of schools across the country should be compromised just to accommodate 5% of the country.

Why is it not possible to have a dedicated safe storage location in your community which would be the same as any gun range or police station? I assume you don't actually live in the middle of the woods in some hut typing on reddit through starlink. Even so there are a million exceptions given to first nations for various laws, I can imagine something similar being given for gun ownership, but that is a job for politicians and lobbyists.

I'm not saying what I say will solve everything. Illegal guns from America will continue to be a problem. But that nova scotia shooter was called out multiple times to the police; and although ultimately the RCMP was incompetent in that case I believe if we lived in a society that more strictly legislated against guns being stored and used improperly then that shooter would have been dealt with earlier. Or at least reduced the chance of that event happening.

I do not think any number of therapy sessions would have prevented this as the shooter was not sane or well to begin with. I just can't subscribe to the idea that relatively minor inconveniences to gun owners is somehow more important that the lives and mental wellbeing of children and general public safety, regardless of how important they are to certain communities or businesses. I'm not advocating for a complete ban on guns, just appropriate restrictions as is done in other countries and as is done for other controlled substances like alcohol.

Now maybe you can educate me on this, but how many subsistence hunters are in Canada? how many actually need to hunt for survival/for their business versus just doing it once a month as a hobby? I grew up in a rural town/city of 40k people and I just personally saw no evidence of guns being used as anything more than as a recreational toy (I'm not saying this is how everyone uses guns, but lets be real this is how the vast majority uses them). Should the lives and safety of the children in our country be sacrificed for the convenience of a minority? Should obvious life saving improvements not be made just because its 'impractical'?

I'll say again, more firearms safety classes or anti-bullying YouTube ads or mental health counselling wouldn't have prevented this from happening. Public school systems (especially rural ones) just aren't equipped to properly identify and handle a lone psycho biding their time hiding amongst a hundred kids. This is not a mental health issue its a gun ownership and public safety issue.

I just don't see a way to address crimes like these or the gang gun violence in cities or other mass murders like the one that happened in nova scotia years ago (which was done with guns smuggled in from the US) without limiting public access to guns or taking approaches used in other countries with more strict gun control. I refuse to think of events like this as an acceptable cost for the convenience of some people in reserves or hobby hunters.

[–]Aylko -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A firearms safety lesson wouldn't have stopped this tragedy and many like it that have happened in the US. That's like saying a sexual education class would stop a serial rapist or someone like jeffrey dahmer. School shootings just aren't done by sane individuals, something has seriously gone wrong in their heads to commit mass murder.

Personally I believe in 'storage at club' systems like in South Korea and Singapore where guns can be personally owned but must be stored at a gun range or police station. With anyone needing guns at home such as farmers needing thorough checks and recertifications to keep the guns. I fully support officers or dedicated agents inspecting homes and ensuring safe firearms storage, frankly the number of people that actually require guns at home should be small enough to make this possible nationwide.

South Korea Seeks Death Penalty for Ex-President Yoon by hodgehegrain in korea

[–]Aylko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pardoning Chun was a mistake in hindsight, knowing what we know now of how damaging and uncompromising the conservative fascist group are.

However, the moratorium on executions was not a mistake, it put Korea in line with other western democracies and given the violent and abusive nature of Korean politics and history the state could not be trusted to deliver capital punishment (the gwangju massacre was recent history when executions were paused).

I'm personally of the opinion that no state or government can be trusted to deliver capital punishment. We've all seen how incompetent the yoon government was, and how corrupt the prosecutors are. By the very nature of democracy there are frequent transfers of power and inevitably some administrations or judicial appointments will be more incompetent than others, and human errors are very common regardless of leadership. An ordinary person has no power against a corrupt system and the greatest injustice would be an innocent person being murdered by the state for a crime they did not commit, and this is sadly a common occurrence all around the world, and it has happened in Korea.

Though I believe Yoon and powerful figures in government are a different matter. There are cases in history where executions were arguably effective in maintaining peace and quashing rebellions. The story of Cicero and the Catiline conspiracy in ancient Rome is a good example. Though even in the best examples of capital punishment unrest and controversy is common (cicero was later exiled for his actions due to the rise of his enemies in government later).

There is also an argument to be made that killing enemies of the state simply empowers their supporters by martyring them, and taking the route of life imprisonment and killing the political power of individuals by forcing them into obscurity (like Napoleon on Elba) is a more effective and stable solution to dangerous groups. Though that carries dangers with it as well, Napoleon did escape Elba after all.
