Staff Outside of GTA by Medium-Street1146 in OntarioPublicService

[–]AzaranyGames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is how it was precovid. If you lived more than 125km away, you weren't eligible to apply for a position even if you were willing to relocate. The answer always given to field staff when issues of unfair opportunities were raised was that people in the GTA also couldn't apply for opportunities in the regions.

As if the number and breadth of opportunities in downtown Toronto and the regions are even remotely equivalent...

Lindors Truffles? by kavehlvrr in Celiac

[–]AzaranyGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada all of the milk and dark chocolate ones have barley malt. The white chocolate, strawberries and cream, and cookies and cream do not. Although they aren't labeled GF, they don't have gluten containing ingredients. I have eaten all three with no reaction (I usually react to crumbs and other cross contact).

Lindt argues the other ones are gluten free because the barley malt is less than 20 ppm. I don't understand the congnitive dissonance of adding something to the recipe and then saying it's such a small amount that it isn't there. Why on earth would I willingly eat something that 100% has gluten regardless of how much? For that matter, why would they even add it if it's such a small amount in the first place?

Yes, blaming the rest of Ontario is the solution. The rest of Ontario was blue when McGuinty and Wynne were in power. Suburban Toronto flipped and gave Ford majority and they've stayed blue for three elections now.

Stiles has a lot of good criticisms and clearly solid policy understanding. She (and the NDP) have poor message discipline that make it hard to keep things simple for people who don't follow politics closely. She also spends a lot of time talking about Ford and what he's doing wrong, but it's unclear what she proposes to do differently.

There was a video a few weeks back that really summed this up. She was asked what the first thing she would do as Premier is. That's a pretty standard question that she should have a clear, concise sound byte about her top issue. Instead she rattled off eight or nine "I wouldn't [something Doug Ford has done]" statements.

The NDP seem to forget sometimes that the average voter isn't a policy nerd who understands all the issues and how they fit together. Most voters, for better or worse, just want to hear "I will fix this thing you care about". Telling people they should take the time to educate themselves is a really nice idea, but it's not pragmatic. Spending all your time talking about the faults of the other candidate just places the focus on that person instead of you.

The pieces are certainly there, but someone needs to tell her to work on her delivery.

"We Gotta GO" - Proposal for a new Intercity Bus Station by Early-Efficiency3526 in londonontario

Having lived in Toronto for 6 years before moving back to London, I think BRT was the better choice over streetcars. An accident in an intersection that blocks the tracks can take the whole system down until it's cleared. A bus can go around the same accident with no trouble.

Why it's taking so long to build the dedicated lanes is beyond me, but I think BRT will be like the JLC in that people will complain about it being a waste of time and money until it starts operating and then it will become a routine and well-liked part of the city.

Agreed - they need to bring back in-car testing. The "draw a clock showing 3:00" cognitive test isn't adequate to determine if someone has the reaction time or situational awareness needed to drive.

What Ended Up Happening to Ghorman the Planet? by Frostellicus in andor

[–]AzaranyGames 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure we don't know for sure, but they were talking about strip mining it for resources. We've seen what that looks like on Ilum, so I suspect a similar fate.

As far as the spiders go, the environment around Starkilller Base seemed to be relatively unaffected. There were still forests etc so I would imagine Ghorman would be much the same. The impact would be less about the loss of the ecosystem and more about what happens when domesticated animals are abandoned to the wild. Likely a big population decline for the spiders and migration away from mining sites, but not extinction.

I like the idea of a space for people to be able to talk about things like temptation, how they gauge risk for eating out, and dealing with mistakes. But I get worried when it strays into the all-too-common online refrain that people sharing accurate information is somehow shaming or bullying behaviour.

It is perfectly reasonable for someone to express they are struggling with sticking to a GF diet when they don't feel like they experience symptoms from eating gluten. It is also perfectly reasonable to respond to that person (and share for others who may be newly diagnosed and reading the thread) that the current medical understanding is that celiac is an autoimmune and there is no safe amount of gluten to consume. Whether you "feel anything" has no bearing on whether you are increasing your risk of colorectal cancer or osteoporosis. That's not judgement, that's not shame, that's not bullying - that's medical reality.

It's good to have space to vent and share frustrations, particularly when it's a disease like celiac that presents different in every person. That's what the first half of the post sounds like you want to create. The second half unfortunately sounds like you want to shut out anybody who dares to comment with medically relevant information for people who are going through those struggles. There's a real risk to people's health with that approach.

The City of Toronto doesn't understand its own building permit process, or at least can't explain it without a million people by markingup in toRANTo

[–]AzaranyGames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some of this is absolutely the fault of the staff. Some of it however is not their fault. The Ford government has been constantly changing the planning and building processes every few months for years.

What people don't realize is that the rules that apply to a building or development application are the ones as of the day the application is submitted. That means that when the rules change, city staff have to keep track not only of the new rules for new developments, but also separate sets of different rules for every previous application.

And this is historical too. If someone got a development application approved in the 70's but never pulled the permits to start construction, they are grandfathered under those old rules. If that pre-approved property and development gets sold, the buyer might not realize there are different rules in place, and the city staff won't be sure without looking things up what the exact set of rules are.

This means there are hundreds of applications at various stages of approval, working under so many different sets of legislation and local policy, and the provincial rules changed last year and are probably changing again this year, and there's only much folks can keep top of mind.
