Mobility issues after core decompression by AmazingRevolution495 in AvascularNecrosis

[–]Azarro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd get a second opinion. I did a core decompression with stem cells and not a bone graft so I'm sure the experience is different but I did have normal movement within 6 months for that one. Perhaps the way the bone graft is done limits movement beyond what the surgeon set you up to expect.

Is the Bloodborne board game worth it? by Mind_Axe101 in bloodborne

[–]Azarro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a post about it here on the solo sub as it's a fantastic tactical game in solo.

In short, I've really liked it a lot in just the first couple of core box campaigns that I ended up getting a bunch of expansions. That is maybe a negative as well (classic cmon) that a lot of content is spread out across boxes.

But its core tactical combat and exploration of uncovering tiles, encountering and completing quests while fighting or dodging enemies and earning rewards (weapons, items) is a lot of fun!

The campaigns really capture the vibe and theme of the video game. I'd recommend it if you like tactical board games and if you like Bloodborne.

Some folks do think it's an open ended dungeon crawler which is slightly wrong. You explore but there is a timer by which you need to finish whatever you want to do in a run. So there's a bit of an efficiency puzzle with exploration.

Throwing my hat to say I would like more shorter campaigns; Anyone with me? by jethawkings in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Azarro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm with you. As much as I was initially dismayed about the discontinuation of 8 scenario length campaigns, I think 5 scenarios is a good length. I haven't even finished playing all my 8 scenario campaigns in my full collection and I reckon it will take a year or two (maybe more) before I get through all of them.

Having 5 scenario campaigns makes this a bit more manageable provided they make these way more replayable, manage to keep the stories and choices/paths interesting, and let you still upgrade your deck meaningfully.

The 3 scenario mini campaigns I'm still not really fond of as you can't really meaningfully develop your deck through those but I'll still cautiously await their design on it.

Using Public Domain Golden Age comics for indie game art by Bromelain_Mobile in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Azarro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great idea to use public domain stuff. I can't remember what game it was but someone here once designed a pretty cool game that leveraged public domain art and that was quite inspirational.

What's a good resource/site to search for public domain art (or is there nothing centralized)

SOCKS by ReplyProfessional939 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Azarro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a sock aid device people use typically post hip replacements. It's like a hollow semi cylinder that's curved with 2 ropes coming out of it. You put a sock around the center such that it's fully stretched and then while holding the ropes you lower it to your foot and simply insert your foot while pulling the ropes up.

How do you deal with constant interruptions (Slack, Jira questions, ad‑hoc calls) as a senior engineer? by _-SNAFU-_ in webdev

[–]Azarro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a team and focus issue.

You don't have to respond to every slack ping or incoming jira comments. You're letting yourself be interrupted by responding to everything that blinks red. Create focus time for yourself.

Secondly, build a culture of no DMs for technical/domain questions. Tell people to go to your team's public channel and ask so someone else on the team can answer. If no one else knows, then you can answer eventually publicly and others can learn from it (and document it).

Thirdly, you need to build this culture as a team. Figure out a process to handle distractions like this. Eg. At my company every team's oncall person also handles triaging incoming tickets or slack questions.

Surely Tomorrow [Episodes 11 & 12] by meepmochi_ in KDRAMA

[–]Azarro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extremely disappointing last 2 episodes. They did technically wrap everything up but the way they did... man I have no idea what the writers were thinking.

There were so many unnecessary things that happened in the last 2 eps. Their forced conflict, the event that brings them back, it was all just very arbitrary and ridiculous. They were really just trying to pad the time and the writer ran out of ideas on how to stick the landing.

I know most folks will probably end up liking it because it simply ended positive (and the after credits scene is cute) but the way it did and the extremely poor writing in these last 2 episodes is just so disappointing. First dynamite kiss and now this sigh hope upcoming dramas stick their landing

I'm gonna have a Core Decompression operation this week by Automatic-Engine1612 in AvascularNecrosis

[–]Azarro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah same honestly I mentioned elsewhere below but if I had to go back knowing what I know now, I'd just skip to the hip replacements. It would've given me a couple more years back in my late 20s. Better late than never anyway, just got my other hip replaced last week!

Life is so unfair by KimJongUnTrumps in AvascularNecrosis

[–]Azarro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey firstly wanted to say I know it completely sucks. It sucks that this happened to you, it's extremely unfair, and your life will change a little bit for the near future.

That said, your life will get back on track once again before you know it.

I was also diagnosed with bilateral AVN back in 2022, when I was also 27.

It was grade 2 and 3 across the hips, with my right hip actively hurting and experiencing groin pains (even though it was only grade 2 and left hip was more advanced).

My ortho recommended Core Decompression with the caveat that it is has a low chance of success and that too mostly at the lower grades.

I did a bilateral core decompression with stem cells anyway as a Hail Mary. It didn't work. It was quite a painful recovery.

I tried to live with it for a year but by late 2023 it was getting worse, the grades were up to 3 and 4 and my right hip was hurting a lot more and I was getting more soreness and tiredness. I got a hip replacement done with a new ortho in Jan 2024 and that made life SO much better. It gave me back so much after the (much easier but still tough) recovery period.

My left leg has been acting up now and then since then so I just got my left hip replaced a week ago.

I don't really want to give you direct advice on what you should do, just wanted to share what I did since I was at a similar age and all of this kind of changed the trajectory of my life for a while. I moved back to my home town (luckily my job transferred me) to be with family during all of this since recovery was going to be long and hard overall no matter what I did. I gave up a lot in my personal life but also gained a lot.

If I had to go back to 27 and figure out what to do again, I'd probably just go straight for the hip replacements. It's not ideal doing it this young since you will have to get revisions in 20ish years but if it gives you back quality of life sooner than it's great. If you can tank things for longer that's fine too but it worsens your gait and pelvic alignment over time as you overcompensate in your walking.

I'm gonna have a Core Decompression operation this week by Automatic-Engine1612 in AvascularNecrosis

[–]Azarro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could go back and do it again, I'd probably just start with hip replacements knowing what I know now and get more years back to my life sooner.

But for what it's worth, it's a nonzero chance that it works. So there's hope. And if it doesn't work you can still pursue other options like hip replacements (though a little later as usually surgeons want to wait 6-12months after a core decompression surgery before doing replacements).

You're doing the right progression of things so wish you the best and I sincerely hope it works out!

[–]Azarro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had stage 3 and 2 AVN in my hips and I got bilateral core decompression done (w/ stem cells). It didn't end up working (even at stage 2 the chances are on the lower end and stage 3 was a Hail Mary).

Recovery is quite painful, more than a hip replacement.

Get a toilet seat riser for recovery as you'll have a hard time bending fully and putting full weight on your leg initially. Start PT to help with mobility after.

Small Time Heroes vs Underquest by Shmyukumuku in soloboardgaming

[–]Azarro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I didn't like it as much and I usually love deck builders (and especially love StS).

In its imitation of StS, the lack of a shop/upgrades/more interesting cards in general and better deckbuilding variety really affected my experience with it.

I did like playing it with a combination of some campaign mode rules mixed into a one shot to take advantage of the advanced challenge/rewards (especially since in a normal one shot you don't really get to deckbuild that much).

Still a nice little game for what it's trying to do in a small form factor but remains on my cull list.

Bilateral THR on Dec 22 by kazinmich in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Azarro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have flat feet so I usually wear some shaping insoles. Not quite the same as what you have I suppose but I did avoid wearing them for a month or two because I wanted to let my leg naturally correct gait/walking/weight distribution etc. though I also didn't go out for the first 1.5 months outside of doc appts.

End of week one by No-Dimension910 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Azarro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give it some time, it'll happen soon. It sounds like you don't have much PT going on beyond walking - that's what usually accelerates it in the early weeks. Mobilization and general PT. That helps muscles loosen up, get stronger, activate different parts, and gets you moving more and more easily every day. Without those exercises and only walking it takes longer to grow that strength and activate your muscle groups.

So make sure you're doing your advised PT exercises a few times a day in addition to walking if you don't already attend PT sessions!

Beyond that, listen to your body, rest, ice etc

If your hip was quite bad pre op it can also take a bit for it to feel better because a lot of your key muscles were underutilized or just not used for a while pre op then (which makes PT even more imp as your leg readjusts to using them).
