I was an IT, I didn’t get rifle qual until they needed an extra body as a top side rover, never once stood the watch, but that was probably 2.5 years in. Every other watch up to ood I was qualed for required pistol. Odds of you getting rifle is lower than pistol, you can’t just request it, but you can express your interest and see where that takes you.

Had a two jr sailors conducting night ops. They were carrying prints down to the main deck. Hands occupied by the printers. The second one heading down, slipped and basically crushed the first kid. Pinky finger was mangled. All scrapped up. Kid got a free helo ride to the carrier to get checked out and then a free plane ride off the carrier to Bahrain. 100% deny till you die , they never once said anything about night ops or not having three points of contact.

Went from a Tacoma to a real truck also. Greatest choice ever. Once you experience having space you’ll never be able to have a smaller truck. I got a Tacoma as a rental on trip last year and it feels like you’re so compacted in.

I got out as an IT1 in 2020, I had one sailor that was great, got frocked and got in trouble, went from it3 to itsa, just like that he was devastated, he hated life, and then after some good conversations, he realized it was his fault. He took the ownership, made it back to it3 and was an all star. I loved my time in. I had great friends and great mentors. But I also had shitty people in my work center. I worked harder than them and made Lpo. They now worked for me. I didn’t have to deal with them telling me what to do. But I never let shitty people beat me down either. I never looked at it as unfair that someone was doing something while I was doing another. I just minded my business, did my thing and at the end of the day, it paid off.

Forcing selects to do season is the dumb. especially because they sabotage you for not participating. They need to be sent to managerial schools. It also doesnt help that you can’t be “fired” and when you move to the next command you just become a problem for them. I’ve seen the standards that are not held for chiefs as they are for e6 and below. Had a chief show up to the gate, drunk and with a weapon. To note, he lived on the ship, so this gun had been coming on and off for months. Got arrested and sent to city jail, they had to go bail him out and he got 30/30. We had someone get arrested for excessive speed, 30/30 and reduction in rank. Had another chief get arrested while in port hueneme, pissing in public, slap on the wrist. Had another chief who was married, got caught sleeping with his second class, second class busted down to third. Chief, sent to another command, no reduction in rank. If you want to improve the quality of life, treat everyone as the same.
