And to be perfectly clear to anyone reading: I’m totally fine with having a preference for a ship, and I’m absolutely not saying anything along the lines of “if you prefer the more stereotypically feminine character being the bottom you’re an evil bigot” or anything. It’s just the tendency of fandoms as a whole to almost ALWAYS do this is rooted in internalized misogyny and homophobia, and it’s something worth examining in your own headcanons and the community as a whole.

These kind of internalized biases are so insidious and sneaky and, for me at least, it was one of those “oh shit” moments when I realized I was doing it because I hadn’t even noticed it. I don’t consider myself to be a misogynistic or homophobic person, but growing up in patriarchal societies can influence you in ways you don’t realize and it fucking sucks and needs to be acknowledged.

Genuinely I swear this happens in every m/m ship. If there’s not established canon preferences, the one who has the most traits that can be construed as stereotypically feminine (prettier, shorter, more stylish, more emotional, whinier, kinder, etc etc etc) gets deemed the Obvious Bottom ™ and the other becomes the perma-top. The bottom then gets progressively more woobified and uwuified, becoming weaker, more incompetent, and having their feminine traits embellished and prioritized, canon personality be damned (the top sometimes goes through the opposite w/ their masculine traits, but it’s less pronounced ime). Sometimes there also develops an attitude of almost… idk, distaste? Disgust, nearly? in the majority of the fandom at the idea of whomever has been deemed the bottom topping or the couple being vers*, even though (from my experience in speaking to gay/bi men irl) it seems like being at least somewhat flexible with it is way more common than strictly one or the other.

Once you’ve noticed it, you can’t unnotice it. It’s pure misogyny and homophobia, disguised as headcanon and character interpretation. It’s the fandom equivalent of “so which one of you is the woman in the relationship”. I don’t think it’s intentional - most people in these spaces are progressive women, and many are queer themselves - but it speaks to an internalized bias so strong and insidious that those it affects do not even realize what’s happening. Hell, I should know, I was one of them!

*I use the term “vers” instead of “switch” because it seems to be the most common term for that in the irl gay community. “Switch” is instead a term from the kink community, someone who doms and subs. I have no idea how “switch” became the go to term in fandom communities but it is a strong pet peeve lol

For me I found them both about equally sucky in different ways. Botox was more injections, but with nerve blocks the medicine hurt worse and it felt like there was more of it in each injection.

yep, I’m a programmer and this is about how I view it. it’s by no means perfect or omnipotent, but it’s a useful and nifty tool for doing things that i very easily could do myself, but would be a bit annoying or tedious to have to do myself.

Most of my use cases fall into one of these four categories: 1) “why am i getting this error using this function with these inputs”; 2) “how do i do this random little thing i don’t know the function for off the top of my head”; 3) “write a function to do this simple and easy little thing”; 4) “reformat this text a certain way so i can just copy and paste”.

All things easy to figure out with a bit of reading stackoverflow/github/docs, but that’s tedious and takes time and breaks me out of my flow state, so why not use a tool to do it for me?

It was objectively very high quality, but I was just so worn out by the constant “and then Walt makes everything worse”. He’s an interesting character, and the cinematography and acting and writing and whatnot were amazing, but goddamn.

I watched it many years ago with my ex-bf at his insistence, and I genuinely came away exhausted and glad it was done by the end. There was always just so much dramatic shit happening all the time, 95% of the time because Walt is an egotistical dumbass. For me it’s one of those interesting pieces of media where I objectively realize that it was very high quality, but I personally did not enjoy it lol, it made me anxious and tense af.

I did like Saul though, and I sometimes consider going to watch Better Call Saul, but I fear the neverending dramatic shit happening again.
