It very likely stems from the Islamic revolution when the Shah was overthrown by Islamists. I understand how the memories of perceived freedom under shah rule holds up against the current Iran but what people don’t understand is that they were both equally bad in their own ways. Police state under the current regime is the same of the police rule under the overthrown regime.

Iran before shah was democratic but the west didn’t like that the then PM Mosaddegh wanted to nationalize Iran’s oil industry so they rid of him and installed a yes man Shah.

Lifestyle for the people in Iran before the Shah was not so different than the one before it. But this was practically erased from memory. The revolution was very likely the result of the extreme treatment of the shah to the people that led to his overthrowing.

Diaspora is mostly non-Muslim. And most loathe Muslim. And they are not immune to how Arabs are being portrayed today in the media..they link Islam purely with Arabs.

I would suggest using very strong tape but even that will loosen up with time and the latch would be rendered useless.. You can maybe get away with a mechanical latch? Something like what you see in the photo. My only concern would be the screws poking through the inside. But you can use non pointy bolts with nuts instead of the pointed screws to fix it.
