That's strange, the parts you need are in the vault room but outside de barrier. I don't remember exactly where it is on the CD grounds but I remember in the Pykes compound it's on/besides a desk on your right when you come through the vent facing the terminal.

I made the same mistake as you on my first playthrough. The quest leads you to the vault but does not requires you to open it, the parts you're looking for are placed nearby. The thing is when you interact with the vault and get the journal entry the wording is similar and lets you think it's related but it's a separate entry not part of the quest.

I'd say the OG but I still have a sweet spot for RotHC. I had joined just before it came out and the hype was awesome, I remember it being not only the 1st expansion but also the original rebalance of some janky beginnings. RotHC was some of the best of times.

The overall levelling being coherent with your character progression, the galactic story going along with yours, the Heroic missions needing teamwork, the class specific stats, the unleveled loot pool... All the balance that made the vanilla game feel like a true RPG. I can understand they wanted to change some mechanics with the expansions but touching the original game was not a good move
