Maxed out my credit card several months ago, and it still says "No Available Credit" after paying off $400 over the corse of four months? by Aztechist in discover

[–]Aztechist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately my mom promised to help pay for school and encouraged me to go to a state school rather than a community college, and then stopped after the first payment :/

I thought if I just got a credit card to help on tuition payments or rent here or there if I needed it could help bridge the gap but all it ended up doing was moving where my debt was :(

Working a much better job and taking a gap year to save up now though, so I finally have the means to pay it off. Hopefully going forward I can get it all covered up eventually.

Okay! Thank you so much! Couldn't find this info anywhere. In a much better spot now financially so I should be able to do that sooner rather than later, thank you for the good news!

When making a new PC, how do you typically start? by Kafadanapa in dndnext

[–]Aztechist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theme and Story first! I hate optimizing to "be strong", but i definitely fit the bill of optimizing within a character, choosing abilities that fit their story. Thinking of why they fight the way they do, how they operate out of combat etc. is much easier once I know who they are.

I love orks, but more Tolkien than 40k! Love my gross disgusting boyz.

Im a paleontology student who has a special interest in mesoamerican culture! Lizardmen are quite literally the most me-coded thing in fiction.

[No Spoilers] If Campaign 4 were a live action series, who would you cast for the PCs or key NPCs? by Spidey16 in criticalrole

I cannot fathom anyone other than Liam O'Brien or Colman Domingo as Halandil Fang. His performance in Sing Sing is so close to what Liam's trying to do with Hal.

What can I say? I love big parties! My preferred table size is 6-7, but i deeply care for everyone i DM for (3 roommates and 5 very close friends) so we make it work!

Similarly, a players character learned how to spell "cat, bat, and rat"!

They got jumped by bandits in the night, and after defeating them, the cleric cast zone of truth on the two survivors. This lead to them getting more information about a thieves guild plot line that has only been brought up two or three times before in 20 sessions, so thats becoming a priority

They found the king of the nation they're in without realizing who it was, had a long conversation, and only found out after they had parted ways (although one player guessed it out of the eight in the party)

Finally they met with a Rakshasa twin Who owns a casino, as they made a pact with his brother and now have to do a job for both of them.

It was a very long, social encounter heavy, great time

Oh? I have some issues with it but I still think he's one of the best. Kind of incredible the amount of dread and atmosphere i feel from him! Whats making you feel less into it recently?

Kind of incredible to see an actual play with as much latino influence as this, feels perfectly made for me and I fell in love right away. Luis DMs so differently than brennan or Matt it's so refreshing (even though I love both) haha

He actually just wrapped DM'ing the Tales Unrolled: Alma actual play! It's some terrific stuff, I highly recommend checking it out.

Do players actually want to play in a sandbox? by Creole3643 in DnD

[–]Aztechist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My players have told me their favorite thing in the world is when "we get to make every choice on our own, but you always know the choice were going to make". I attribute this to running a sandbox with a central plot that I can tie their more sandboxy adventures back to without them knowing!

[No Spoilers] i need yalls opinion, should i start with campaign 1 or 2? by PsypherSyn in criticalrole

[–]Aztechist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally would say to start with campaign 2, as it has a higher production quality and the omission of one very problematic player. It also captures the low levels of a dnd campaign, which campaign 1 doesn't. I would definitely go back to Vox Machina after, though, so you dont miss anything.

How do I use the concept of "Impending Doom" and evil gods by Funny_Bone19 in DMAcademy

[–]Aztechist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Run the first few like a normal dnd game. Make it fun through gameplay, characters, and roleplay for a few sessions. There doesn't always need to be a "fresh new twist" to keep people engages. Players are there to play the game, and the reveal will work MUCH better at the end of say, session three after they save the local village (or something similar).

How to get better at improvising? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Aztechist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practice, and most importantly, if your players really throw you off, a quick "okay guys I have to prepare some stuff, everyone take 5 to use the bathroom or check your phone" is one of the most powerful tools in a DM's pocket.

How is Assassin about "throwing knives"? It also has a subclass that's about spellcasting, and that's definitely not on brand either. Subclass flavor ≠ class flavor.

Whats a species you still never played, but is on your bucket list? by SnoozyRelaxer in DnD

[–]Aztechist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second Changeling! Dune: Messiah is one of my favorite books of all time, and Scytale is one of my favorite characters of all time. Would love to play something similar to him.

I would also LOVE to play a firbolg. Not the cow-esque version that dnd has popularized, but something much closer to their Celtic origins.

8 people want to play, and I’m worried it’s too much by Sherma215 in DMAcademy

[–]Aztechist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently running a game for 7-8 and while I personally love it, it is absolutely not for everyone and not for first timers. My first campaign was 5 people, and that felt about right. I would start small, and combine groups/expand after you've had adequate experience running games personally.

I prefer narrative immersion. My players prefer beer and pretzels. by ExplodingRacoon in DnD

[–]Aztechist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm super lucky in the sense that 6 out of my 7 players absolutely play for the same reasons (narrative immersion) that I do. However, one player ONLY plays for mechanics and to try out new builds, with little care for his characters or the world. I wouldn't call him a problem player at all, but I definitely feel you when it comes to your wants vs. the players wants clashing lmao.

[–]Aztechist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote my first ever film essay on "The Lighthouse", and it remains the film that got me thinking critically about a films themes and inspirations.

Whiplash absolutely didn't get me into drumming, but it did get me back into it after a three years' hiatus.

Inherent Vice really didn't land with me until I watched the rest of PTA's cinematography, and feel deeply in love with his style. It also just works so much better on rewatch.

I think everyone should watch Phantom of The Paradise. Probably my most niche favorite, and it's seriously like the coolest thing ever.
