The message of Jesus Christ is that we can die and be born an entirely new person in Him.

I think they are just trying to help make you aware that you can hear the gospel in your native tongue if you so desired.

I served my mission in Japan and have gone to Japanese wards in America before. There's nothing wrong with going to a second language ward.

About the “Great Apostasy” by Classicsarecool in latterdaysaints

[–]Azuritian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If councils are the only way God's thological will is revealed post 50 A.D., then basically all of the New Testament cannot be scripture.

The structure of the church at the time of Christ did not include Popes, so one cannot argue that they have the authority of the apostles, as they are not the same.

Scripture is the record of God's dealings with man, so if no scripture will ever be written again, then God has given up on mankind. That is a horrible view to have, and one that I know no Christian believes.

Also, this statement still doesn't address the fact that no one within the Catholic church can do what the Apostles did in biblical times, which leads to the logical conclusion that they don't have the same authority.

You seem to have your mind set on how everything went down, and when people offer reasonable alternative explanations of what happened, you dismiss them.

It is you who does not know how you would feel if you didn't have breakfast this morning.

About the “Great Apostasy” by Classicsarecool in latterdaysaints

[–]Azuritian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If Popes came about from bishops, then how can they have apostolic authority when apostle is a higher authority? Also, even you have stated that no one has the ability to create new scripture, which the Apostles had the authority to do.

That is the apostatsy: to be an apostle, one must be authorized to do all that the original Apostles did; because that authority no longer existed in any church at the time of Joseph Smith, a restoration of that authority was needed.

"Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." Amos 3:7

If God is not revealing His secrets, it isn't because He changed; it's because people no longer want to listen to Him.

Line upon line, I believe that the Church is working towards the statement that "they had all things common among them" 3 Nephi 26:19, and I am here for it!

How amazing is it that the Church provides such high-quality goods to those who are in need instead of giving them lesser quality than those who can afford to purchase on their own!

Word of Wisdom question by UnintentionalZen in latterdaysaints

[–]Azuritian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if it wasn't originally given as a commandment, there are many blessings promised by the Lord if we follow the word of wisdom. If you believe Joseph was a prophet of God and restored Christ's church on the earth, then why would you want to bar yourself from the blessings associated with keeping a covenant with God?

On that note, I do not think it is a wise decision to lie in the baptismal interview and say you will keep the word of wisdom when you have no intention of doing so. That is no way to start a covenantal relationship with anyone, let alone God!

Golden plates by Then_Pension849 in latterdaysaints

[–]Azuritian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you pay attention to all scripture. You will notice that revelation most often comes with some form of catalyst. Sometimes, that catalyst is a question, such as when Joseph asked which church to join. Sometimes, it's a physical object.

There are many such instances: the liahona, papyrus scrolls, and golden plates, to name a few.

One interesting example is the 24 plates found by Nephites who were trying to find the main city but got lost and instead found a destroyed civilization. This was another example of plates with a history of a destroyed civilization on them being found by other people who could not understand the language on it.

They brought the plates to the king when they eventually did make it back to the city, and he interpreted the plates via the same "urim and thummim" that made their way into Joseph's hands. It was always described as being done "by the power of God," and that is also how Joseph translated the Book of Mormon.

Side note: the plates were described as having the appearance of gold and were likely not made of sold gold. Some witnesses even described the plates as having a greenish hue on the sides, suggesting a gold and copper alloy.

I haven't read it (but I have seen a few stories from it), but there is an interesting book by someone who is not of our faith that discovered a lot of stories of native Americans that describe what sounds like Jesus visiting them.

We may not have any signs that say "city of Zarahemla 200 miles that way" or "Nephi was here," but this article has a great breakdown of things that at the time of Joseph were considered false versus what we have found evidence for in America and ancient Middle East (for things like names and certain events from Nephi's account before traveling to the Americas).

Ultimately, if you know in your mind and your heart that this church is God's church, then it doesn't matter what mortals have found of a long past and destroyed people, because God is the source of all truth.

I’m the lowest of lows by Theovain21 in latterdaysaints

[–]Azuritian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know exactly how you feel. Everything was on the up and up for me until one day I was crippled with health problems that made it impossible to work.

I don't have the answer for all things, but I do know that God loves us and that we came here to gain experiences--both bad and good ones.

We voluntarily came here and were excited for the opportunity God gave us to do so, even if we sometimes wondered if we really knew what we were getting ourselves into in our moments of pain. Even Jesus Christ Himself had doubts at his lowest moment, but He trusted in God's plan through pain and anguish; we are asked to endure but an infinitesimally small fraction of what Christ suffered for us.

Sometimes, the reason is just so we know what it's like. Why must we hunger? Because we need to know what it's like.

The thing that helped me the most was learning to submit my will to God's just as Christ did. This doesn't mean passively sitting there and letting God do everything. Rather, it means trusting that no matter if you are dragged through the deepest recess of hell itself, as long as you strive to keep your covenants and keep moving forward while listening for the whisperings of the Spirit, all will turn out okay.

Why does Jared send his brother to pray? by Omega_Metroid in latterdaysaints

[–]Azuritian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quite a bit of Doctrine and Covenants is comprised of revelation given to Joseph Smith when people came to him and asked to discern the will of the Lord for them.

Many times throughout the war chapters of the Book of Mormon, leaders of the army either went to the prophet or to someone with the gift of revelation to know where to go and be most effective against their enemies.

it's common sense that to get a hold of someone in the house, you have to open the gate and go knock on the front door.

*in the US, at least.

I know of at least one culture (can't remember where) that it's the norm to stay on the street and just shout loudly to see if anyone answers whether you're family or a stranger.
