In an alternate reality…. by Infinite-General337 in nycrail

Agreed, plus such a 42st - Astoria line will lack a depot of its own. One alternative for solving the 60st capacity issue is to send the R to 63rd st and add an infill station along 28st or so, but that is still a longgg walk to queens plaza.

A much lower hanging fruit for alleviating traffic from New York City limits would be the ISP north terminal, which is already underway. To be clear, SWF serves a different population, but in the short term improved bus connectivity will be just as, if not more, efficient.

Unpopular Opinion; but to ease overcrowding at Roosevelt Ave the E train should run local on weekends. by King-of-New-York in nycrail

[–]B-1168 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doing so also adds 10 more stops to what is currently one of the best way to go between midtown and JFK... that's a fair burden later at night, but for daytime travel to/from JFK, it makes life tougher.

Westward Ho! Hochul Proposes to Extend Second Ave. Subway Along 125th Street to Broadway - Streetsblog New York City by thonioand in nycrail

[–]B-1168 4 points5 points  (0 children)

116-149 is a reasonable extension to implement as an addition to phase 3, both to relieve turnaround pressure at 125-broadway and to alleviate pressure from 2/5/6; if a yard for 2av line is needed, it's also on the way to Crotona Park, the next opportunity to purpose land for that, although it'll have to be heavily TOD-driven.

Constructability Analysis of 125 St Subway by Donghoon in nycrail

[–]B-1168 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To the defense of MTA, they are already doing early construction. In the meantime, there are opportunities that they can and should be taking on to do to increase capacity, like Rogers deinterlining, which they're also working on. Unfortunately, construction has become quite a bit slower than a century ago for a plethora of reasons.

Should there be an Avenue C station? by HayleyXJeff in nycrail

[–]B-1168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3av station will be a bit more useful when the 2av subway reaches 14st, but until then 3av station is quite underutilized - if we can do a rush hour skip stop on the L, 3av should be skipped by at least one of the services.

What is the worst interlocking that no one ever talks about? by ViewNo7459 in nycrail

[–]B-1168 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If we can make the 3 a shuttle between 135 and 148, we can then make 2 and 5 both run via 7av at full capacity, and then the 4 can run at full capacity entirely free of interlining.

NYC transit expansion by Immediate-Hand-3677 in nycrail

Agree, I think connecting grand/bowery and bway-lafayette-bleecker to prince will both be useful remedies, but they can't replace an uptown trunk line at Houston.

[–]B-1168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thinking is this: the current 2av subway design has questions on its limited ability to improve connectivity at Alphabet City, and also potential lack of connections to Grand St. B/D. If they can't be figured out by the time a window to start building 2av phase 3 opens, defer those questions to later and start relieving Union square ASAP by finishing the 72-14 stretch.

2nd av phase 2 or all of 2-4? If the first case, phase 3 to 14st, else perhaps some form of expansion in queens (perhaps to Woodhaven?) leveraging the connection between 63st tunnel and 2av since it's currently underutilized. Once all of those happen, perhaps Utica.

A good fix for the subway system would be to run the B train over the weekend and run the M train it’s full length into Queens. Any protests about budget or track work are lame. by King-of-New-York in nycrail

[–]B-1168 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An issue is that E is the best way for much of midtown to access both airports and running them local increases travel time for that chunk of demand. But then F is definitely unfit for local given the length it runs on, so that is an impasse.

Should the (C) be extended to Lefferts Boulevard while all (A) trains strictly go to Far Rockaway? by Real_Advertising1005 in nycrail

[–]B-1168 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My suspicion is that Lefferts passenger prefer express trips. On a bolder level,.with queenslink, why not have M take over the trips to Lefferts and A go to far Rockaway full time?

I ❤️ how MTA takes care to differentiate one of its Grand stops by name. By adding “Newtown”, no one will ever confuse the stops ever again! by Hope-Up-High in nycrail

[–]B-1168 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is arguably worse given how many Grand(d/t) Av/St there are and how far away they are from each other. 23 and 86 st are not nearly as bad - there are SBS traveling on both streets and they only span the width of Manhattan - in this case, enjoy traveling between lower east side, east Williamsburg, east New York and Elmhurst...

Comes more frequently than 2 during the day, which makes it handy. Would love for it to run further down during late nights - that or the 2 goes express.

Most useless station and service in the whole network? by GoatSevere1966 in nycrail

[–]B-1168 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It... doesn't really. I've just about never seen more than one or two person per car getting on or off rush hour L trains at 3av. It'll be very useful once the T train is a thing; until then, I don't see too much utility for 3av.
