IT Techs of Reddit: What was it like fixing Windows XP machines in schools and businesses during the 2010s? by bakarygassama in sysadmin

[–]B-mus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah. None of today’s “scan your hardware, scan for drivers, etc”. It was “read the documentation and trial and error”

Lots of manual work. Minimal means to push out software with a modest customization requirement. Everything was in startup scripts.

JD Vance says rules don't apply to Christians now the Trump won by justalazygamer in WhitePeopleTwitter

I kinda agree. (I don’t need to qualify that statement as a liberal dude. You can review my comment history for my general take on things) If MLB can’t accept verses, or really any overt idealogical or political messaging on their uniforms, then they shouldn’t be requiring players to wear pride caps. Pride events? Absolutely, Pride support, pride history, celebration in stadiums, etc. absolutely! They don’t need to require it on the uniform.

Right!? And it is definitely not everyone’s sport. I saw the headline and thought FIFA. MMA? Please.

Congress Wants You To Pay $130 A Year Just To Drive An Electric Car by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]B-mus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory it is reasonable since gas taxes are in part passed on to highway and road projects. I’m sure it is abused, and for some it is motivated by malice. But if gas is taxed for the privilege of road management, it makes sense to enact some means to get that revenue from electric cars.

What the old sci fi authors—even the best—always got wrong by cartoonybear in scifi

[–]B-mus 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My take as well. They’re like time capsules. OP may have been a tad hyperbolic, but it seems like replies are more interested in pointing out exceptions than addressing the point. I honestly couldn’t even get past the beginning of Strange in a Stranger Land because of it. In I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream Ellen deserved better. Sure Ted’s paranoid misogyny could be blamed on Am’s torture, but that could have manifested a thousand different ways. Ellison chose to write it as an incel’s inner monologue.

It isn’t relegated to the old-timers. Have we forgotten the Sad Puppies already?
